How to Grow Ajwain Plant for Seed, Not the Nursery Lookalike
First, which ajwain? The plant that makes the ajwain seed in your masala dabba (Trachyspermum ammi, carom) is a slender, dhania like annual that you sow from seed in October. The furry, thick leaved “ajwain plant” sold at every nursery is a different plant altogether, Indian borage, and it never makes a single seed. This page is about growing the seed crop: how to grow the ajwain plant at home, what pot it needs, and why patience is the main ingredient.
Before you start
- What it is: carom, an annual in the carrot and dhania family
- Sow: mid October to early November in the plains
- Germination: slow, often two weeks or more
- Pot: 30 cm wide (12 inches), 25 cm deep, about 12 to 15 litres
- Sun: full sun, 6 hours or more
- Seed ripe: roughly late March to April, about six months after sowing
- Verdict: a fun, slow pot crop; yields a few spoons, not a kilo

Carom seed plant or “ajwain leaves”: which one did you buy?
Look at the leaves. Carom has fine, feathery, thread like leaves on thin stems, much like hara dhania gone lacy. Indian borage (Plectranthus amboinicus, Patta Ajwain) has thick, fuzzy, round edged leaves that smell strongly of ajwain when rubbed and roots from any cutting. If your nursery plant has fat furry leaves, it is borage, and our ajwain leaves guide is the one you need. For how the seed compares with saunf in the kitchen, see ajwain vs saunf.
When to sow ajwain in Pakistan
Ajwain is a rabi crop. A field trial at the Seed Spice Research Station in Jagudan, Gujarat, found a 20 October sowing gave the best seed yield of the dates tested, which fits the plains window well.
| Zone | Sow | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi | Early to mid November | Short cool spell; smaller plants |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Mid October to early November | Harvest before April heat |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Mid October to early November | Shelter pots on frost nights |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | October | Frost is the risk; sow early |
| Hills | March to April | Grows as a summer crop there |
How to grow ajwain from seed
Ajwain is grown only from seed. It forms a taproot and dislikes being moved, so sow into the final pot. Our seed starting guide covers trays for other crops; skip them here.
- Check the seed: kitchen ajwain is often old or lightly roasted and will not sprout. Put 20 seeds on damp tissue in a closed box. If few have sprouted after two weeks, buy fresh seed from a seed shop.
- Fill the pot with 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand. Our potting mix guide explains the parts.
- Sow thinly on the surface, then cover with a dusting of mix, no more than half a centimetre.
- Keep the top damp with a spray bottle. It is slow: ICAR scientists describe ajwain as a slow starter that weeds easily overtake.
- Weed by hand every few days for the first two months. That early window matters most; in field work at ICAR’s seed spices centre in Ajmer, the critical weed free period ran to about 54 days after sowing.
- Thin to four or five plants in a 30 cm pot once they are 8 to 10 cm tall.
The sprout test that saves a season
Do the tissue test in the first week of October, not on sowing day. If the kitchen jar fails, you still have time to find fresh seed. Many first timers lose a whole winter waiting for roasted seed that was never going to wake up.
Care through the winter and spring
Water
Let the top 2 to 3 cm dry between waterings. That is every four or five days in November and as little as once a week in a foggy January. Ajwain rots in soggy cold soil. In March, as Multan and Lahore pass 35C, water every second morning.
Frost and fog
Young plants can be hurt on frost nights in Punjab and Islamabad. Pull pots against a south wall or under a roof edge, and never water late in the evening before a cold night.
Food
Two tablespoons of compost at thinning and a little more when flower umbels appear. A balanced garden feed at half strength once a month is optional. Too much nitrogen gives leaves, not seed.
How to harvest ajwain seed
Flowers come as flat white umbels, like dhania. Seed sets over several weeks.
- Watch the umbels turn from green to grey brown, and the seeds harden.
- Cut the ripest umbels with a stem, a third of the plant at a time, every few days.
- Hang them upside down in a paper bag in the shade for a week.
- Rub the dry umbels between your palms over a tray and winnow off the chaff.
- Store in a dry glass jar away from sunlight.
Expect a few tablespoons from one pot. Grow it for the satisfaction and the bees, not to replace the pansari.
Common problems
| Problem | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing came up | Old or roasted seed, sown too deep | Tissue test, sow shallow |
| Seedlings smothered | Weeds and grass | Hand weed weekly for two months |
| Aphids on umbels | Common in late winter | Water jet, then mild soap spray if needed |
| Wilting and collapse | Root rot from wet pot | Better drainage; water less in cold |
| Yellow, thin plants | Too little sun | Move to full sun |
Once umbels form, the seed is your food, so no chemical sprays from then on. If you used anything earlier, follow the label’s waiting time, wear gloves, and keep children and pets away until dry. Ajwain seed in normal cooking amounts suits most people; strong daily ajwain water for babies and young children has age limits, covered in our seed guides, and nothing under one year. If you are pregnant or take regular medicine and plan to use ajwain beyond cooking, ask your doctor first.
Ajwain plant questions
Can I grow ajwain from the seeds in my kitchen?
Sometimes. Many shop seeds are old or lightly roasted. Do a tissue sprout test first; if few sprout in two weeks, buy fresh sowing seed.
How long does ajwain seed take to germinate?
Often two weeks or a little more, which is slow. Keep the surface damp and do not dig it up to check.
Is the nursery ajwain plant the same as the seed plant?
No. The fuzzy leaved nursery plant is Indian borage, used for leaves and pakoras. It never makes ajwain seeds.
When should I sow ajwain in Lahore?
Mid October to early November. That gives cool months for growth and ripe seed before the April heat.
How long until ajwain seeds are ready?
About six months from sowing in the plains. Cooler districts take a little longer.
Can ajwain grow indoors?
Poorly. It needs full sun and grows thin and pale behind glass. A sunny roof or balcony works far better.
Can I eat ajwain plant leaves?
The carom plant’s feathery leaves are aromatic and can be used in small amounts like dhania. Most people who want leaves grow the borage plant instead.
Why is my ajwain plant dying in winter?
Usually wet cold soil or frost. Water less on cold, grey weeks and move pots to a sheltered wall at night.
Does ajwain grow back after harvest?
No, it is an annual. Save some seed and sow again next October.
