Egg and Milk Together (Anda Doodh): Raw Egg Risk and Safe Ways

The one real danger with egg and milk together is the raw egg. Cracked into a cold shake, a raw or half-set egg can carry Salmonella, so it’s never for pregnant women, young children, older adults or anyone with weak immunity. Cooked egg with milk, boiled, scrambled or stirred into hot milk until it thickens, is a perfectly good pairing, and this guide shows how to make it safely and what it adds up to.

Before you start

  • Raw egg in a milkshake: skip it; Salmonella risk, and less protein reaches you than from cooked egg
  • Boiled egg with a glass of milk: fine, a good breakfast
  • Egg and milk at night: fine if you’re not heading straight to bed on a full stomach
  • Egg, milk and banana plate: roughly 350 to 405 kcal and about 21 g protein
  • Trying to gain weight? See a doctor first if weight is falling or won’t rise despite eating

Raw egg in milk: why this is the part to worry about

The gym habit of cracking two raw anday into a glass of milk, sometimes with a banana and honey, looks tough on film. It’s the worst way to have egg. Salmonella bacteria can sit inside an egg that looks, smells and tastes perfectly normal, and nothing in a cold shake kills them. Did you know an eggshell has thousands of tiny pores? That’s one reason a cracked or dirty egg is riskier still, and why eggs are best washed just before use rather than before storing.

  • What it does: diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever and vomiting, usually starting from 6 hours to a few days after eating.
  • Who gets hit hardest: pregnant women, babies and young children, adults over about 65, and anyone with diabetes, kidney disease, cancer treatment or other conditions that weaken immunity. For them it can mean hospital.
  • Why desi eggs aren’t safer: farm and “desi” eggs can carry it too, and pasteurised eggs, the one safer option for raw use, are hard to find in most Pakistani and Indian shops.

There’s a second, quieter reason. Did you know raw egg white contains avidin, a protein that grabs biotin (a B vitamin) and stops you absorbing it? Cooking switches avidin off. And the body takes up noticeably more protein from cooked egg than from raw, so the raw shake gives you less of the very thing it’s meant for. Heat fixes both problems at once.

A raw egg shake gives you more risk and less protein than the same egg boiled.

Can we eat egg and milk together? Yes, when the egg is cooked

Once the egg is cooked, it’s ordinary food. Custard, seviyan with egg, French toast, anda halwa and bread pudding all cook egg and milk together, and nobody calls them dangerous. A boiled egg with a glass of milk is two good proteins at one meal. Nothing more dramatic than that.

Some people do find it heavy. Two rich foods on an empty stomach first thing in the morning can sit uncomfortably, and lactose intolerance (common in adults across South Asia) causes gas and cramps with milk regardless of the egg, so if a plain glass of milk on its own gives you the same trouble, the egg was never the problem and a smaller glass, dahi or lassi is the fix to try.

What Ayurveda and Unani say

Egg isn’t part of the classical Ayurvedic food lists in the way fish is, so the “viruddha” label you see online is mostly modern. Unani tradition counts egg yolk as warm and nourishing, and anda wala doodh has long been a winter drink in Pakistani homes for exactly that reason. Take these as tradition: they describe a feeling of warmth and fullness, not a medical effect.

Anda wala doodh: how to make it so the egg is actually cooked

The trouble with the home version is that many people whisk an egg into warm milk and drink it half-set. Here’s a method that cooks the egg through without curdling it. It makes one glass.

  1. Whisk 1 egg in a bowl with 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar or grated gur until smooth.
  2. Heat 250 ml milk in a pan until it just starts to steam and bubble at the edges.
  3. Pour about half the hot milk slowly into the egg while whisking hard, which warms the egg gently so it doesn’t scramble into lumps.
  4. Tip the mixture back into the pan. Stir on low heat for 3 to 4 minutes, scraping the bottom, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. If you have a thermometer, it should reach 71 °C.
  5. Don’t let it boil hard. It will split. Add a pinch of elaichi powder and drink warm.

That glass is roughly 210 to 250 kcal with cow milk and one teaspoon of sugar, with about 14 g of protein. Buffalo milk takes it to about 250 to 290. Thick, warm, filling. A small meal, really.

The gym shake, made safe

Blend 250 ml cold milk with 1 banana and drink it with 2 boiled eggs on the side. You get the same protein as the raw-egg version, more of it absorbed, and none of the Salmonella gamble. Peel the eggs the night before and keep them in the fridge if mornings are rushed.

Egg, milk and banana for breakfast: honest numbers

Here’s what the plate adds up to.

ItemPortionApprox. kcalProtein
Boiled eggs2 large130 to 155about 12 g
Cow milk, whole240 ml glass120 to 150about 8 g
Banana1 mediumabout 100about 1 g
Total350 to 405about 21 g

Swap in buffalo milk and add about 40 kcal. Fry the eggs in oil or ghee and add another 40 to 90 kcal per egg, which is how this “light” plate quietly becomes a 500 kcal one. Can we eat egg and banana together? Easily. The banana brings quick carbohydrate and the egg slows the meal down, so you stay full longer than you would on the banana alone.

Egg and milk for weight gain: what works and what to avoid

This plate is a handy base if you’re trying to gain, but read this first. If you’re losing weight without trying, or can’t gain despite eating well, see a doctor first, before any shake or plan, because an underlying illness is often the reason and it needs finding. Thyroid problems, diabetes, TB, coeliac disease, infections, depression and eating disorders are all common causes, and no shake fixes them.

  • Realistic pace: about 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week. Faster than that is mostly water and fat.
  • How much extra: roughly 300 to 500 kcal a day above what you need now. The egg, milk and banana plate added to your normal meals is close to that on its own.
  • Muscle, not just weight: simple strength work (squats, push-ups, stairs, filled water bottles) and protein spread across the day matter more than one big shake.
  • What not to buy: unlabelled “wazan barhane” powders and syrups sold online or by some hakeems have repeatedly been found to contain hidden steroids or appetite drugs. Moon face, swelling, stretch marks, mood swings or rising sugar after starting one are warning signs to stop and see a doctor.

Teenagers shouldn’t be put on a “gain diet”; normal family meals and a doctor checking growth on a chart is the right approach. People with diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease need a doctor or dietitian to shape any gain plan. Who should be careful

Pregnant women, children, older adults and anyone with weak immunity should eat eggs only with a firm white and yolk, never raw or runny, and no raw-egg shakes or homemade mayonnaise. Egg allergy is common in young children; introduce well-cooked egg and watch for hives, swelling or vomiting, and call for help at once for any breathing difficulty. Under 1, cow’s milk mustn’t be the main drink, and no sugar, gur or honey goes into a baby’s food. Some antibiotics (doxycycline and ciprofloxacin among them) and thyroid tablets absorb poorly when taken with milk, so follow your pharmacist’s timing. With high cholesterol or kidney disease, ask your doctor what daily amounts suit you. After any egg dish, see a doctor for diarrhoea with fever of 39 °C or above, blood in the stool, or no urine for 6 to 8 hours; the first 24 hours of food poisoning are covered separately.

Egg and milk together: your questions

Can we eat egg and milk together?

Yes, as long as the egg is cooked. Boiled egg with a glass of milk, custard and anda wala doodh are all fine. The only real risk is raw or runny egg, which can carry Salmonella.

What are the side effects of boiled egg and milk together?

For most people there are none beyond fullness. Some feel heavy or gassy, usually from lactose in the milk or a large portion on an empty stomach. Anyone allergic to egg or milk should avoid them regardless.

Can we eat egg and milk together at night?

You can. A boiled egg and a warm glass of milk make a filling late snack, though if you get heartburn it’s worth leaving a couple of hours before you lie down.

Is drinking raw egg with milk good for muscle?

No. Raw egg carries a Salmonella risk, and your body takes up noticeably less of its protein. Boil or scramble the eggs and drink the milk alongside.

Can we eat egg and banana together?

Yes. It’s a common, sensible breakfast, with the banana giving quick energy while the egg slows the meal down so you stay full longer than you would on fruit alone.

Can we take egg and milk together for weight gain?

It’s a useful, cheap addition of about 350 to 400 kcal when paired with a banana. Add it to your normal meals rather than replacing one, aim for 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week, and see a doctor first if weight is falling without reason.

Can we eat egg and milk together during pregnancy?

Yes, with fully cooked egg and boiled or pasteurised milk. Skip raw-egg shakes, soft-boiled eggs and homemade mayonnaise while pregnant.

Can children have egg and milk together?

Yes, once they eat solids, with the egg well cooked. Under 1, milk shouldn’t be cow’s milk as the main drink, and no sugar, gur or honey should be added to a baby’s food.

Is egg and milk together bad according to Ayurveda?

Not really. Egg isn’t in the classical viruddha lists the way fish is, so most online claims are modern. In tradition both count as heavy and nourishing, which is a reason to watch portions, not to avoid the pairing.

Can I drink milk after eating egg while taking doxycycline?

Milk and other calcium-rich foods reduce how much doxycycline you absorb, so there usually needs to be a gap, and your pharmacist or the leaflet will give the exact timing for your medicine.

How many eggs with milk can I have a day?

For most healthy adults, about one whole egg a day on average is a reasonable ceiling, with extra whites if you want more protein. Ask your doctor for a personal limit if you have high cholesterol, diabetes or kidney disease.

Is egg and milk good for students?

It’s a good, cheap, filling breakfast before school or exams, and the benefit is steady energy and protein through the morning rather than any special effect on memory or marks. Simple works.
