Viral Hack Checked: Ear Candling to Pull Out Wax and Toxins?
Verdict: Risky. Ear candling doesn’t pull out wax or toxins. The hollow candle creates no real suction, the brown “wax” left in the stub is burnt candle, and the method has burned faces, hair and eardrums and dripped hot wax into ear canals.
Before you book a session
- The hack: a hollow cone of waxed cloth placed in the ear and lit at the far end while the person lies on their side.
- Verdict: Risky. No suction, no wax removed, real burn risk.
- The residue: made by the candle burning, and it forms even when the candle isn’t in an ear.
- What works: leave wax alone, or have a nurse or doctor remove it when it truly blocks the ear.

The stub is the sales pitch. After ten minutes of a warm, crackling cone in the ear, the therapist snips it open and shows a sticky brown-yellow mess. Everyone gasps. Proof? No. Ear candling to pull out wax and toxins is one of the most tested viral hacks around, and the stub turns out to be the candle, not the ear.
How ear candling is supposed to work
The claim goes like this. The burning flame warms the air inside the hollow cone, which creates a gentle vacuum, or “chimney effect”, that draws wax, debris and toxins up out of the ear. Some sellers add sinus relief, better hearing, calmer minds and cleaner lymph. The candles are often sold as “Hopi” candles, a name the Hopi tribe itself has publicly said it has no link to.
It sounds plausible. Chimneys do draw air upward. But a chimney pulls air, not sticky wax, and a small flame at the far end of a long, leaky cloth tube simply can’t produce anything close to the suction you’d need to lift wax that is stuck firmly to living skin deep inside a curved canal.
What actually happens inside the cone
When the pressure inside a burning ear candle has been measured, there was no negative pressure (no suction) in the ear at all. When the candle was burned outside any ear, over a plate, the same brown residue formed inside the stub. That residue is melted beeswax or paraffin mixed with soot and burnt cloth.
And the ear itself? Ears examined before and after candling show the wax still sitting exactly where it was, and in some cases there’s actually extra wax in the canal afterwards, only it’s candle wax that melted and dripped down the inside of the tube while the person lay still and trusted the process. More, not less.
Burn the same candle over a saucer and you get the same “ear wax”.
Myth: ear candles draw out toxins
There are no toxins stored in ear wax waiting to be drawn out. None. The body clears its waste through the liver, kidneys, gut and lungs, and the ear canal isn’t part of that system at all, nor does it connect to the sinuses, the lymph glands or the brain, whatever the diagrams on the candle box suggest. So candling can’t clean the blood, lymph or sinuses, whatever the leaflet says. The warm, relaxing feeling people describe is real. It comes from lying still in a quiet room with warmth near your face, not from anything leaving your head.
Did you know? The ear canal is a closed tube. The eardrum seals its inner end, so there’s no open path from the outer ear to the nose, throat or brain for anything to be drawn through.
The injuries doctors actually see
Useless would be bad enough. It’s worse.
- Burns to the face, neck, hair and outer ear from the flame or falling ash.
- Hot wax dripping into the canal, where it can burn the canal skin, harden into a plug and need a doctor to remove.
- Perforated eardrums from hot wax or from the candle tip pushed too deep.
- Delayed care for a real ear infection, hearing loss or blocked ear, because the candle seemed to “do something”.
- House fire risk, since a lit candle, a pillow and loose hair sit side by side.
Children are at special risk because they move suddenly. Never use a candle anywhere near a child’s ear.
What to do instead for wax that bothers you
Most ears never need cleaning inside. If yours feels blocked but isn’t painful, try this plan, and read our queued guide to blocked ear and ear wax for how to tell wax from pressure or water.
- Put away the tools: no candles, cotton buds, hairpins or keys, for at least 2 weeks.
- Clean the outside only: a damp cloth round the outer ear after bathing.
- Soften if suitable: if you have no pain, discharge, grommets or past burst eardrum, a pharmacy ear-wax softener or plain olive oil used as the pack or pharmacist says, for 3 to 5 days.
- Book a check if it’s still blocked after about a week. A nurse or doctor can look first, then use microsuction or gentle irrigation.
For a painful ear, go to our earache first aid guide instead, and for why home oils aren’t the answer either, see roghan zaitoon and the ear drop myth. Other hacks we’ve tested live in Viral Hacks Checked.
If you’ve been burned by an ear candle, cool the skin under cool running water for about 20 minutes (never ice, butter or toothpaste) and get medical help for any burn inside the ear, on the face, or larger than a coin. See a doctor the same day if candle wax may have dripped into the ear, or for ear pain, fever of 38 °C or more, discharge, sudden hearing loss or spinning dizziness. A doctor decides whether any drops or medicine are needed.
Ear candling: questions people ask
Does ear candling really work?
No. Measurements have found no suction in the ear during candling, and the wax in the ear stays where it was. The residue in the stub is burnt candle.
What is the brown stuff inside an ear candle?
Melted candle wax, soot and burnt cloth. It appears even when the candle is burned in open air with no ear nearby, so it isn’t ear wax.
Is ear candling safe?
It isn’t. It has caused burns to the face and ear, hot wax plugs in the canal and holes in the eardrum. Because it has no benefit, any risk is too much.
Can ear candling help sinus problems?
No. The ear canal is sealed by the eardrum and doesn’t connect to the sinuses. Steam, saline rinses and a doctor for lasting symptoms are the sensible route.
Why does ear candling feel relaxing?
Warmth near the face, a quiet room and lying still for a while all feel calming. That comfort is real, but it has nothing to do with wax or toxins leaving the body.
Is ear candling safe for children?
No, never. Children move suddenly, which raises the chance of burns and wax dripping into the ear. Nothing should go into a child’s ear without a doctor.
What should be done if candle wax gets into the ear?
Don’t try to pick it out. See a doctor, who can look at the eardrum and remove the wax safely. Any pain, reduced hearing or dizziness makes that visit urgent.
What is the safest way to remove ear wax?
Usually leave it, since ears clear themselves. If wax blocks the ear, softening drops as directed and then a nurse or doctor using microsuction or gentle irrigation is the safe route.
Can ear candles improve hearing?
No. If hearing is muffled by packed wax, proper removal helps. Candling doesn’t remove wax, and dripped candle wax can make hearing worse.
