Lip Scrub for Dark Lips: Do Sugar and Honey Mixes Work?

A sugar lip scrub can lift dry flakes off your lips, but it is no fix for the pigment your lips make. This guide checks the viral mixes against dermatology advice, explains why dark lips come from pigment rather than dead skin, and gives a routine gentle enough for lips you want to keep healthy.

The short verdict

  • Verdict: Partly. It clears loose flakes, not dark colour.
  • What it does: Removes dead surface skin, so lips feel smoother for a while.
  • What it does not do: Act on the melanin your lips make, which the 2023 review ties most often to sun exposure.
  • Best use: An occasional gentle rub, then a plain balm with SPF 30 by day.
  • Skip it when: Lips are cracked, bleeding or stinging, or a cold sore is starting.

What does a lip scrub actually remove?

Lips shed a thin layer of dead skin cells that dries, lifts and peels. A scrub grinds those loose cells away, so lips feel smoother straight after. Lip colour is a separate matter.

Melanin, the pigment that colours skin, is made by melanocytes in the epidermis, which is the outer layer of skin. A 2023 review by Thawabteh and colleagues names sun exposure as the most frequent cause of hyperpigmentation. The options it describes for dark patches are creams, medicines and chemical peels, and a kitchen scrub is not among them.

What usually makes lips darker?

The 2023 review names sun as the most frequent cause of hyperpigmentation. Cleveland Clinic warns that sunburned lips raise the risk of lip cancer, and it advises year-round UV protection, with SPF 30 lip balm even on cloudy or cold days.

Smoking is the other cause the research points to. A small 2013 study compared 109 smokers with an equal number of non-smokers, and every smoker in it had pigmentation on the lips or gums. Two thirds of the non-smokers had none. The study is small, so it points to a link rather than proof of cause.

Licking your lips is another habit to drop. The American Academy of Dermatology says licking makes lips drier as saliva evaporates, and that picking or biting irritates them and can prevent healing. None of the cited pages links licking to lip colour, so drop the habit for comfort and healing. For hormones and the rest of the list, read our dark lips guide.

Does a sugar and honey lip scrub work?

Fine sugar gives a gentle rub some grit, and together with honey it lifts loose flakes, which is why the mix feels good on dry lips. Neither ingredient is among the creams, medicines or peels that the 2023 review describes for dark patches.

Flakes, not colour, are what this mix changes.

What about coffee grounds, beetroot, and coconut oil or Vaseline?

Coffee grounds are coarser than fine sugar, so they make a rougher rub. The American Academy of Dermatology advises stopping any product that irritates chapped lips, so skip the grounds. They are not a pigment product either.

Beetroot is another viral suggestion, and none of the dermatology pages cited here recommends it for lips, so it is not a fix for dark lips. Coconut oil or petroleum jelly in a scrub is a moisture step. The Cleveland Clinic says petrolatum, glycerin and mineral oil ointments help cracks heal and lock in moisture, and it does not describe them as lighteners. Balm, not scrub. For the bedtime side of that routine, see our winter bedtime balm habit, and for chapped lip remedies, the ghee and malai guide.

How do you scrub lips safely?

  1. Check first. Skip the scrub if your lips are cracked, bleeding or stinging, since stinging means a product is irritating your lips, according to the AAD. If a cold sore is starting, use the cold sore guide instead.
  2. Use fine sugar with a little oil or petroleum jelly. A small pinch with a few drops of plain oil is enough. Honey is optional, since it makes the paste stickier. Leave out citrus (lemon included), cinnamon, mint and peppermint, which the AAD lists as especially irritating to chapped lips. The cinnamon version is in our cinnamon lip check.
  3. Rub for a few seconds, no more. Use a damp, soft cloth in small circles, keeping the pressure light. Do not pick at peeling skin with your teeth or fingers, which Cleveland Clinic advises against because it can cause cracks and sores.
  4. Rinse and pat dry. Use lukewarm water and pat with a soft towel rather than rubbing.
  5. Seal with a plain balm. Choose a fragrance free, hypoallergenic balm, since the AAD suggests those for chapped lips. Petroleum jelly ointments are one option Cleveland Clinic describes for sealing in moisture.
  6. Add SPF by day. Use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors. Reapply about every two hours outside, as the AAD advises. Cleveland Clinic goes further and says every hour, and straight after eating, drinking or swimming, so use that shorter gap when you eat or swim.

Try this: the flake test

Run a clean fingertip lightly across your lower lip without pressing or picking. If it catches loose flakes, a gentle rub with the soft cloth can smooth them. If the lip is smooth and still dark, a scrub has no further job, so put your effort into daily sun protection and balm instead.

How often should you scrub, and what does a two week plan look like?

Keep scrubbing occasional, never daily. Neither the American Academy of Dermatology’s chapped lip page nor Cleveland Clinic’s chapped lip page mentions scrubbing, so the scrub is an optional extra, not a fix. Balm and sun protection do the work that matters most.

Week one: SPF balm by day, a plain balm at night, and no scrub; week two: if your lips feel calm and are not sore, do one gentle rub on one day, then return to the balms. If lips are still flaky after two weeks, or the colour changes in a way that worries you, book a doctor’s check rather than scrubbing harder. Judge any change over several weeks, not days. Be patient.

When should a lip spot go to a doctor?

See a doctor if a lip spot changes shape or colour, bleeds, hurts, or looks different on one side from the other. Sunburned lips raise the risk of lip cancer, so any spot that changes or bleeds needs checking. Sudden darkening with no clear cause also needs an exam. The 2023 review lists several causes of pigment change, including sun, hormones, age, injury and medications, and a scrub cannot tell them apart. Get it checked rather than scrubbing harder.

Smooth lips are not the same as lighter lips.
Take care if

Skip scrubs on cracked, bleeding, stinging or irritated lips, and during a cold sore. Stop any product that stings, and try anything new on a small patch first. Pregnant or breastfeeding readers should check new products with a doctor or pharmacist first. If a doctor has warned you about sun sensitivity from a medicine, follow their lip protection advice. See a doctor if a lip spot changes, bleeds, hurts, or does not match on the two sides.

Is a sugar and honey lip scrub worth it?

A sugar and honey mix can make dry lips feel smoother for a while, and that is all it can be expected to do. The coffee, beetroot and oil versions are no different, because none appears among the pigment options in the sources cited here. A scrub clears flakes. Daily sun protection and cutting down on smoking address the causes named in the research, so they are the habits to put first. More checks like this are in our Viral Hacks Checked hub.

Lip scrub questions, answered

Can a lip scrub lighten dark lips?

No. A lip scrub removes loose flakes, so lips look smoother. The pigment behind dark lips is a different matter, and a kitchen scrub is not among the options the 2023 review lists.

Does a homemade lip scrub help dark lips?

A homemade sugar scrub can smooth flakes at home, but a kitchen mix is not a pigment product. Count any smoothness as a short-term result, not a colour change.

Does coffee in a lip scrub help dark lips?

Coffee grounds can scrub the surface, but they are coarser than fine sugar, so they can be harsh on lips that are already dry. They are not a pigment product, so skip them.

Does beetroot lighten dark lips?

No. Beetroot is not among the ingredients the dermatology pages or the pigment review cited here recommend for dark lips.

Is a sugar and coconut oil lip scrub safe?

It may suit lips that are not cracked, sore or stinging. Keep the rub light, rinse, and stop if the lips sting, because the AAD says stinging means the product is irritating your lips.

Can a lip scrub make dark lips worse?

Possibly. The 2023 review lists skin injury and inflammation among the causes of hyperpigmentation, so harsh or frequent scrubbing that irritates lips is a good reason to stop. Citrus, including lemon juice, is one of the irritants the AAD says to avoid on chapped lips.

How often should you use a lip scrub?

Occasionally, not daily, and skip it whenever lips are sore, cracked or stinging. Sun protection matters more for colour than a scrub does, since the review names sun as the most frequent cause.

Does lip sunscreen really matter for dark lips?

Yes. A 2023 review names sun exposure as the most common cause of hyperpigmentation, and Cleveland Clinic recommends SPF 30 on cloudy and cold days too.

Can smoking darken lips?

Yes, a small 2013 study linked smoking to lip pigmentation. It points to a link, not proof of cause, but it is one more reason to cut down.

When should dark lips be checked by a doctor?

See a doctor if a lip spot changes shape or colour, bleeds, hurts, or looks different on the two sides, or if lips darken suddenly with no clear cause. A doctor can examine the spot, which a scrub cannot do.
