Blocked Ear and Ear Wax (Kaan Band Hona): Safe Steps, Red Flags

Sudden hearing loss in one ear, with no cold and no obvious reason, is a same-day ENT visit, because the treatment that helps works best in the first days. Most aren’t that serious. They’re wax, cold or flight pressure, or water after a bath, and each has a simple, safe step you can take today without putting anything sharp into the ear.

Before you start

  • Same day: sudden hearing loss in one ear, pain with fever, discharge, dizziness, or a blockage after a head injury.
  • Wax: gradual muffling, worse after a shower or cotton bud.
  • Pressure: after a cold or flight, pops on swallowing.
  • Water: right after a bath or swim, sloshing feeling.
  • Never in the ear: cotton buds, hairpins, matchsticks, keys, ear candles, hot oil.
  • Children: nothing ever goes into a child’s ear.

The blocked ear that must not wait

If you wake up, or suddenly notice during the day, that one ear has gone quiet or dull, and you don’t have a cold, don’t wait for it to “open by itself”. This is called sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and it comes from the inner ear or the hearing nerve rather than a plug in the canal. Doctors often give steroid medicine for it, and the chance of helping is best when it’s started within the first few days. So a same-day visit to an ENT specialist, or an emergency department, is the right move.

A quick clue you can check: hum with your mouth closed. With wax or fluid, the hum usually sounds louder in the blocked ear. With nerve-type loss, it tends to sound louder in the good ear. It isn’t a reliable test, and it must never delay the visit, but it’s worth telling the doctor what you noticed.

Other blocked ears that need a doctor the same day:

  • Pain with fever, or pain that keeps you awake.
  • Discharge: yellow, green, bloody or smelly.
  • Dizziness, spinning or new ringing with the blockage.
  • Blockage, bleeding or clear fluid after a fall or blow to the head.
  • A diabetic with a painful ear, or an ear that is swollen and red outside, because ear infections in diabetics can spread.
  • Weakness of the face on the same side.

Did you know?

Ear wax isn’t dirt. It’s a mix of skin flakes and oils that keeps the canal waterproof and slightly acidic, and the skin of the ear canal moves outward slowly, like a conveyor belt, carrying the wax with it. That’s why most ears clean themselves, and why cotton buds tend to push wax back against the drum instead.

Home checks that help (and one honest limit)

  1. Swallow-and-yawn test for pressure: sip water and swallow 5 times, then yawn wide. A pop or crackle that briefly clears the ear points to pressure, not wax.
  2. Tilt-and-tug for trapped water: tilt the blocked ear toward the floor, gently pull the ear lobe down and back, and hop on one foot 5 or 6 times. Water often runs out warm within a minute.
  3. Hum test: hum with lips closed for 5 seconds and note which ear sounds louder. It is a clue only.
  4. Honest limit: you can’t see your own ear canal. A doctor, and in some places a trained pharmacist, can look in with a light and tell you whether wax is the problem at all.

Ear blocked due to a cold or a flight

The Eustachian tube is a narrow channel running from the middle ear to the back of the nose, and its job is to keep the air pressure behind your eardrum equal to the air outside, which it does quietly every time you swallow, until a cold swells its lining shut or a plane descends faster than it can keep up. The result is a full, crackly ear, often both sides.

  • Swallow, chew and yawn often. On a flight, drink water and chew during descent.
  • Steam from a bowl of hot water with a towel over the head for 5 to 10 minutes can ease the stuffiness. Keep children well away from bowls of hot water; scalds are common.
  • A saline nasal rinse can help the nose drain. Decongestant sprays or medicines are an “ask a pharmacist” item, and they aren’t for young children or people with high BP without advice.
  • A gentle pop: pinch the nose, close the mouth, and blow very softly, as if into a balloon that barely moves. Never hard, and never with a heavy cold.

A cold-blocked ear usually settles in one to two weeks. If it lasts longer, or pain and fever arrive, see a doctor.

Clogged ear wax: what is safe at home

If there is no pain, no discharge, no fever, and you’ve never had a hole in the eardrum (perforation) or ear surgery, you can soften wax gently.

  1. Warm a small bottle of plain olive oil or almond oil to body temperature by holding it in your hand for a few minutes. Never heat it on the stove.
  2. Lie on your side, blocked ear up.
  3. Put in a few drops of the oil with a clean dropper and stay lying down for 5 minutes.
  4. Sit up with a tissue at the ear; don’t plug it with cotton deep in.
  5. Repeat daily for 3 to 5 days. Pharmacy wax-softening drops are an alternative; ask the pharmacist which suits you.
  6. If the ear is still blocked after 5 days, stop and see a doctor, who can remove it by suction or careful irrigation.

The ear may feel a little more blocked at first as the wax softens and swells. Normal. Pain isn’t.

Oil softens wax. It doesn’t pull it out. The ear does that itself, or a doctor does.

Myth: cotton buds, ear candles and peroxide clean the ear

  • Cotton buds: act like a ramrod, packing wax deeper and scratching the canal. Clean only the outer ear with a cloth.
  • Hairpins, matchsticks, keys, feathers: scratch the skin, cause infection and can pierce the eardrum.
  • Ear candles: the “wax” left in the stub is candle residue, not ear wax. They have caused burns to the face and ear canal, and dripped candle wax into ears.
  • Hydrogen peroxide poured in: fizzes and stings, can irritate the canal skin, and is dangerous if the eardrum has a hole.
  • Hot oil, garlic oil or mustard oil heated in a spoon: can burn the canal. Warm to the hand only, if at all.
  • Roadside ear cleaners: unsterile tools and no light to see the drum. Skip them.
How it was used

Warm mustard or garlic oil in the ear was the household answer for every ear complaint. The warmth-and-oil part is gentle enough for wax in a healthy adult ear. The heating and the garlic are where burns and irritation come from, and oil of any kind is wrong for an ear with pain, discharge or a perforation.

Children, and the ears you already know about

Nothing ever goes into a child’s ear at home: not oil, not buds, not drops, unless a doctor prescribed them. A child pulling at an ear with fever or crying needs a doctor, and our guide to a child’s earache covers what to do meanwhile. See a doctor the same day if

Hearing drops suddenly in one ear with no cold; the ear hurts with fever; there is discharge or bleeding; you feel dizzy or the room spins; the blockage follows a head injury; the face is weak on one side; or you are diabetic with a painful, swollen ear. Don’t put oil or drops in an ear that hurts, discharges, or has had a perforation or surgery. Nothing goes into a child’s ear. Anyone with a weakened immune system should see a doctor rather than try home softening.

Blocked ear: your questions

Blocked ear: when to see a doctor?

The same day for sudden one-sided hearing loss, pain with fever, discharge, dizziness, or a blockage after a head injury. Otherwise, see one if wax softening for 5 days or a cold-blocked ear lasting two weeks hasn’t cleared it.

Why is my ear blocked on one side?

Most often wax, water after a bath, or pressure from a cold. Sudden one-sided loss with no cold can be nerve-related and needs an ENT the same day.

What is a safe clogged ear wax home remedy?

A few drops of plain olive or almond oil at body temperature, daily for 3 to 5 days, if the ear doesn’t hurt or discharge and the eardrum is intact. If it’s still blocked, a doctor removes it.

Ear blocked due to cold: what helps at home?

Swallowing, yawning, chewing, steam and a saline nose rinse. It usually clears in one to two weeks. Pain and fever mean a doctor.

Kaan band ho jaye to kya karein?

First work out whether it came after a bath, a cold or slowly over days. Try the tilt, the swallow test, or gentle oil softening. Sudden deafness in one ear, pain, fever or discharge needs a doctor the same day.

Should I use cotton buds to clean my ears?

No. They push wax deeper and can scratch the canal or damage the eardrum. Wipe only the outer ear.

Do ear candles work?

No. The residue is from the candle itself, and they have caused burns and blocked ears with candle wax.

How do I get water out of my ear?

Tilt the ear down, pull the lobe down and back, and hop gently. Lying on that side for a few minutes also works. Don’t dig with a bud.

Can ear wax cause dizziness or ringing?

A large plug can cause a little of both. But dizziness with a blocked ear should still be checked, because inner-ear problems cause the same.

Can I put oil in my child’s ear?

No. Nothing goes into a child’s ear at home unless a doctor prescribes it. Take a child with ear pain, fever or discharge to a doctor.

Is hydrogen peroxide safe for ear wax?

It’s better avoided at home. It stings, can irritate the canal, and is risky if the eardrum has a hole. Ask a pharmacist for a proper wax-softening product instead.

Can a pharmacist check for ear wax?

In some places trained pharmacists can look in the ear; most local chemists can’t. A GP or ENT can see the drum and remove wax safely.

My ear is blocked when I wake up. Why?

Wax that shifted in the night, or fluid from a cold, often feels worse on waking and clears after moving around. If it doesn’t clear, or came with sudden hearing loss, see a doctor that day.
