Invasive Garden Threats
Stick around and I’ll walk you through recognizing Lantana’s sharp-smelling leaves and paper mulberry’s fuzzy, milky-sap buds, then show the practical steps to pull them out, keep your garden safe, and end with the one trick that stops new growth for good.
Why they’re a problem
Here’s the thing: Lantana isn’t just an ugly weed, its leaves, flowers, berries and even the sap contain lantadenes that can make kids, pets, and livestock sick, causing vomiting, diarrhoea and liver trouble. Meanwhile paper mulberry spreads fast, its shallow roots toppling in storms, and the male trees dump massive pollen clouds that set off allergies for anyone nearby.
How to spot them
Lantana is a scrambling shrub with rough, toothed leaves that smell sharp when crushed, and square stems dotted with tiny hooked prickles. Its flower heads shift from yellow to orange to pink on the same cluster. Paper mulberry shows soft, fuzzy leaves, sometimes heart-shaped, sometimes mitten-like, and a broken twig oozes milky sap. Male trees drop long catkins, females bear spiky orange-red berries.
Removing Lantana
Now, the part most people miss is that a soak the night before makes the roots loosen, so they pull out in one piece. First, suit up with gloves, long sleeves and closed shoes, lantana sap can sting skin. Then cut the top back to knee height, dig around the woody crown with a spade, lever it out, and bag every berry you find, never composting them where animals can reach.
Removing Paper Mulberry
And this is where it gets interesting: paper mulberry seedlings can be pulled by hand while they’re knee-high, especially after rain when the soil softens. For a sapling, dig out the main root and any side roots you can follow. A mature tree near walls needs a professional cutter, cutting the trunk alone often spawns suckers. After felling, snap off every sucker for a year; each removal weakens the root system.
