Grow Kamini Fast

Ever dreamed of a fragrant hedge that will keep blooming year after year, but you’re not sure where to start? In this video I’ll walk you through the basics of planting kamini, from seed to cutting, and I’ll save the best tip for the very end, the one trick that can give you a thriving plant faster than you’d expect.

Where it thrives

Kamini, also called orange jasmine, loves the tropical heat of South Asia. It thrives in places like Karachi, Lahore, and Delhi where the summer is hot and the winters are mild. Just keep it out of hard frost, and give it plenty of sunshine, especially during the monsoon months when it drinks the most.

Growing from seed

First, look for bright red, soft berries right on the bush, those are the only ones that still hold viable seeds. Squeeze out one or two seeds, rinse off the pulp, and plant them within a day or two. Push them just a centimeter deep in a moist seed mix, then keep them warm and shaded until they sprout.

Germination time

When you sow fresh kamini seeds, they usually break dormancy quickly. In a warm, moist environment you can expect the first tiny shoots to appear within two to four weeks. That’s fast for a tropical shrub, so keep the seed tray moist but not soggy, and watch the little green peeks.

Cuttings & air layering

If you prefer a more reliable route, try a semi-hard cutting or, even better, air-layer a lower branch during the monsoon. Cut a 15-centimeter shoot, strip the lower leaves, and wrap the bark with moist cocopeat, then seal it with a clear bag. In six to ten weeks you’ll see a healthy root ball forming, ready to be planted as a robust shrub.

Hedge spacing

When you start a kamini hedge, give each plant enough room to spread. Singapore’s NParks recommends spacing them roughly ninety to one-hundred-fifty centimeters apart, which translates to about three to five feet. This spacing lets the branches interlock without crowding, creating a dense, aromatic barrier that stays healthy over the years.

The one trick

Now, the one trick that can cut years off your waiting time: air-layer a branch during the monsoon. By wrapping the bark with moist cocopeat and sealing it, you give the plant a head start on root development. In just a couple of months you’ll have a sturdy, rooted plant that can be planted directly, giving you a blooming hedge much sooner.
