Used Lemon Uses: Cleaning Jobs That Work and the Ones That Fail

Used lemon halves are genuinely useful for a few cleaning jobs: loosening grime in the microwave with steam, shifting limescale from a kettle, lifting garlic and fish smells from hands and boards, and brightening a dull steel sink. What they cannot do is disinfect. Lemon is a mild acid, not a germ killer, so raw chicken boards still need hot soapy water.

Quick facts

  • Works well: microwave steam clean, kettle limescale, smells on hands and boards, tap and sink water spots
  • Works a little: light stains on plastic boxes and wooden boards
  • Does not work: disinfecting after raw meat, removing oil grease alone, cleaning marble
  • Keep for: two or three days in a box in the fridge, then compost or bin

Why do lemons clean anything at all?

Lemon juice is mostly water with citric acid. Acid dissolves the minerals in hard water, which is why it shifts the white chalky crust in kettles, on taps and on glass. The juice and the oils in the peel also smell strong and fresh, which covers or lifts smells. That is the whole trick. There is no magic in it, and once you know it is “mild acid plus scent”, you know where it helps and where it is useless.

For using the peel as food (zest, powder, lemon salt), see our guide to lemon peel powder and zest. This page is about the squeezed halves that are usually binned after nimbu pani.

Collect, then clean once a week

Keep a small lidded box in the fridge door for squeezed halves. By Friday you will have five or six, enough to do the microwave, the kettle and the sink in one go. Halves left on the counter dry out within a day and grow mould soon after in humid weather.

The microwave steam clean

This is the best use of all, because steam does the scrubbing for you.

  1. Put 2 or 3 squeezed lemon halves in a microwave-safe bowl with 250 ml of water.
  2. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes until the water boils hard and the window steams up.
  3. Leave the door shut for 5 minutes. The steam softens dried-on splatters.
  4. Open carefully (the bowl will be very hot) and wipe the inside with a damp cloth. Use a lemon half to rub any stubborn spots.

Stand back when opening, and lift the bowl with a cloth. Water heated in a microwave can boil over suddenly when moved.

Kettle and tap limescale

Hard water leaves a chalky white scale in electric kettles, a common problem in many Pakistani cities.

  1. Fill the kettle halfway with water, add 3 or 4 squeezed lemon halves cut into pieces.
  2. Boil, switch off and leave for an hour.
  3. Pour out, rinse well, then boil fresh water once and throw it away to remove any lemon taste.

Heavy scale may need a second round. For a stronger job, tatri (citric acid powder) does the same thing in concentrated form; our guide to tatri uses covers amounts. For taps and shower heads, rub with a lemon half, leave ten minutes, then rinse and dry.

Hands, chopping boards and smells

Rubbing a lemon half on your fingers after chopping garlic, onion or fish helps lift the smell. Wash with soap afterwards. On a wooden or plastic board, sprinkle a little salt, scrub with a lemon half, rinse and stand upright to dry. That helps with smell and light staining, such as haldi.

It is not a sanitiser. After raw chicken, meat or fish, wash the board with hot soapy water, rinse and dry, as food safety advice from the CDC sets out. Our full verdict on the salt-and-lemon method is in does lemon and salt sanitise a chopping board.

Lemon cleans scale and smells. Soap and hot water deal with germs.

Do not mix lemon juice with bleach. The CDC’s rule is never to mix bleach with any other cleaner, because the mix can release vapours that are dangerous to breathe. Keep lemon cleaning separate from any bleach cleaning, with a rinse in between.

When the halves are spent, they can go in a compost bin in small amounts, chopped. More ways to use up kitchen scraps are in our Zero-Waste Kitchen section.

How it was used

Older households used nimbu with namak to shine brass and copper pateelay before Eid, and rubbed lemon on hands after cleaning fish. Those uses are sound because they rely on acid. The idea that lemon “purifies” a kitchen is folklore.

Take care if

Citrus juice such as lime or lemon on skin, followed by sunlight, can cause phytophotodermatitis, a burn-like rash with dark patches that can last weeks. Wash your hands with soap after using lemon, before going out in the sun. Lemon stings in cuts and cracked skin and in eyes; rinse with plenty of water if it splashes. People with eczema on their hands may find it irritating. Never mix lemon or other acids with bleach. If a rash blisters, spreads, or you breathed in fumes from a mixed cleaner and feel short of breath, get medical help.

Used lemon questions

What can I do with used lemons?

Use the squeezed halves to steam clean the microwave, descale a kettle, polish taps and steel sinks, rub smells off hands and boards, and shine brass with salt. Keep them in the fridge for two or three days until you have enough.

Does lemon disinfect?

No, not reliably. Lemon juice is a mild acid that dissolves scale and lifts smells. For germs, especially after raw meat, wash with hot soapy water.

How do you clean a microwave with lemon?

Microwave two or three lemon halves in 250 ml of water for three to four minutes, leave the door shut five minutes, then wipe. The steam loosens splatters.

Can lemon descale a kettle?

Yes, for light to moderate scale. Boil water with lemon pieces, leave an hour, rinse, then boil and discard one kettle of fresh water.

How do I get garlic smell off my hands?

Rub a lemon half over your fingers, then wash with soap and water. Rubbing on a steel spoon or sink under running water helps some people too.

Can I clean marble with lemon?

No. Acid can etch marble and some stone tops, leaving dull marks. Use a mild soap made for stone.

Is it safe to mix lemon and bleach?

No. Bleach should never be mixed with any other cleaner, lemon included, because the mix can give off dangerous vapours. Rinse surfaces between products.

How long can I keep squeezed lemons?

Two or three days in a closed box in the fridge. Throw them away if they turn soft, smell off or show mould.

Does lemon remove haldi stains from boards?

It helps lighten them, especially on plastic, if you rub with lemon and salt and then leave the board in sunlight to dry. Old deep stains may never go fully.
