Chikoo Seeds: Are They Poisonous, and What If You Swallow One?

If someone swallowed a whole chikoo seed by accident, the usual outcome is nothing at all: the smooth, hard seed passes through in a day or two. Chikoo seeds are not food, though. Do not chew, grind or powder them, and treat the seed as a choking hazard for toddlers.

Quick facts

  • Swallowed whole by an adult or older child: usually passes without trouble
  • Chewed or ground seeds: not a food; skip seed “powders” sold online
  • Toddlers: hard, slippery seeds are a choking risk; remove every one
  • Peel: edible in theory, rarely pleasant; most people peel it
  • Unripe fruit: sticky latex, astringent; wait until soft
  • Seeds per fruit: anywhere from none to around a dozen

Are chikoo seeds poisonous?

They are best treated as inedible. A ripe chikoo (sapodilla, sapota) hides a few dark brown to black, flat, shiny seeds in its flesh; University of Florida’s extension describes them that way and notes the count varies from none to twelve. They are hard enough that nobody eats them by choice.

There is no reason to eat the inside of a chikoo seed, and claims online about seed powders for skin, hair or “kidney stones” have nothing solid behind them. Some traditional and folk sources warn that chewed seeds upset the stomach. Since there is no benefit to set against that, the sensible rule is simple: spit them out, and do not crush them into anything you eat.

What happens if you swallow a chikoo seed?

For an adult or school age child who swallows one whole, almost always nothing. The seed is smooth and the gut moves it along like any other indigestible object, usually out within a day or two. You do not need salt water, laxatives or home remedies to “push it out”.

Myth: a swallowed seed causes appendicitis

This old fear scares many parents. Seeds are a very rare cause of appendix problems. Our article on swallowed fruit seeds and appendicitis explains what is actually known.

When a seed is an emergency

For babies and toddlers the danger is choking, not poison. A slippery seed can slip into the airway. If a child is coughing hard, let them keep coughing. If they cannot cough, cry, speak or breathe, or turn blue, give choking first aid for their age and call emergency help immediately. See a doctor promptly if, after swallowing a seed, anyone has drooling and cannot swallow, chest or throat pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen tender belly, or blood in vomit or stool. Grinding seeds into a powder to eat is not recommended for anyone.

Can we eat chikoo peel?

Technically yes on a fully ripe fruit, since it is thin and not harmful, but the rough, slightly sandy brown skin is why almost everyone peels or scoops. On an unripe or half-ripe fruit, skip it: the skin and flesh carry sticky white latex (the same tree sap once used to make chewing gum), which tastes harsh and puckers the mouth.

Wash the fruit under running water before cutting, even if you will not eat the skin, so dirt from the peel does not travel onto the flesh with the knife.

How do you avoid latex and pick a ripe chikoo?

An unripe chikoo is hard and gummy with latex. A ripe one gives to a gentle press, like a ripe kiwi, and the flesh is soft, grainy-sweet and the colour of brown sugar. UF’s extension notes picked fruit usually ripens in about 4 to 10 days at room temperature. If you scratch the skin with a fingernail and see green underneath, it is not ready. Our chikoo ripeness guide covers buying and the scratch test in detail.

Ripen them in a newspaper

Wrap hard chikoos in newspaper with a ripe banana and leave them on the counter for a few days. Check daily by gentle press. Once soft, refrigerate them and eat within two or three days. Cutting into a hard one does not help; the latex will not leave once it is cut.

How do you seed chikoo safely for children?

  1. Wash the fruit and cut it in half lengthways.
  2. Pull out every black seed with a spoon tip; count them against the number of seed pockets you see.
  3. Scoop the flesh away from the skin. Remove any hard, gritty strands around the seed pockets.
  4. Mash it for babies starting solids, or cut into small soft pieces for toddlers.

Is a chikoo shake healthy?

The fruit alone is naturally very sweet and filling. The usual chikoo shake from a juice shop adds milk, a lot of sugar and often ice cream, which turns it into a dessert. At home, blend ripe chikoo with chilled milk and no added sugar; the fruit sweetens it enough. People with diabetes should treat chikoo, even as a shake without sugar, as a high sugar fruit and keep portions small.

What about chikoo juice and dried chikoo powder?

Chikoo has thick, pulpy flesh, so “juice” is really a blended pulp drink, best fresh within a few hours. Dried chikoo slices or fruit powder made from the flesh are a snack ingredient; they spoil if not dried hard, so throw any that smell musty or show mould. Powders made from the seeds are different and are not something to eat.

Chikoo seed and peel questions

Are chikoo seeds poisonous?

They are not a food and should not be chewed or ground. Swallowing one whole by accident is usually harmless.

What happens if I swallow a chikoo seed?

Usually nothing; it passes out in a day or two. See a doctor if you have throat or chest pain, cannot swallow, keep vomiting or develop belly pain.

My child swallowed a chikoo seed, what should I do?

If the child is breathing, talking and comfortable, watch them. If they are choking, cannot breathe or speak, or later have pain, vomiting or drooling, get urgent medical help.

Can swallowing a chikoo seed cause appendicitis?

It is very unlikely. Seeds are a rare cause, and one accidentally swallowed seed is not something to panic about.

Can we eat chikoo peel?

On a fully ripe fruit it is safe but gritty, so most people peel it. Avoid the skin of unripe fruit because of the latex.

Is chikoo seed powder good for hair or skin?

There is no good evidence for it. Do not eat seed powder, and patch test anything you put on skin.

Why is my chikoo sticky and white inside?

That is latex in an unripe fruit. Let chikoos soften fully at room temperature before cutting.

Is chikoo shake good for health?

Chikoo blended with milk is a filling drink, but shop versions are heavy with sugar and ice cream. Make it at home without added sugar.

Can babies eat chikoo?

Yes, from about six months as a smooth mash, with every seed and gritty strand removed. Introduce it like any new food.

Can diabetics drink chikoo shake?

Chikoo is a high sugar fruit, so a shake is best avoided or kept to a small glass without added sugar, as advised by your doctor or dietitian.
