Soaked Chana, Mungfali and Munakka for Weight Gain: Morning Plate
Half a katori of soaked kala chana gives about 145 calories. That’s roughly one roti, which is why soaked chana for weight gain rarely works on its own. Build it into a full soaked morning plate instead, with a muthi of bhigi mungfali, 6 munakka and a glass of milk, and you’re at about 480 calories and 23 g of protein on top of your normal meals. Below: the plate, the sums, how to push it further, and the checks to make first.

You’ve lost weight without trying, you can’t gain however much you eat, or you’re losing weight with thirst and passing a lot of urine, a cough lasting over 3 weeks, night sweats, fever, loose motions, a racing heart or low mood. Thyroid problems, diabetes, TB, coeliac disease, infections, depression and eating disorders are common reasons people stay underweight, and no food plan fixes those. Never use unlabelled “wazan barhane” powders, syrups or hakeemi gainers: they have repeatedly been found to hide steroids (such as dexamethasone) or the appetite drug cyproheptadine. A round “moon” face, swelling, new stretch marks, mood swings or rising sugar after starting one means stop and see a doctor.
Is soaked chana good for weight gain? The honest answer
Soaked kala chana is a good food: cheap, full of plant protein and iron, and very filling. For weight gain, that last point is the problem. Chana fills your stomach long before it fills your calorie gap.
Weight gain happens only when you eat more energy than you burn, day after day. Most adults who want to gain need a steady extra 300 to 500 calories a day, and at that pace a realistic gain is about 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week. Faster than that is mostly water and fat, not the firm weight people are hoping for.
So ask what half a katori of soaked chana adds: about 145 calories. To reach 400 extra from chana alone you’d need close to three katoris, which for most people means a bloated stomach, gas, and no appetite for lunch. That’s why the plate below mixes a little chana with denser foods.
The soaked morning plate for weight gain
Everything here is soaked the night before, so breakfast takes five minutes. Figures are for the dry weight, because soaking adds water, not calories.
| On the plate | Calories | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| Half katori kala chana (40 g dry), soaked and boiled | about 145 | about 8 g |
| 1 muthi bhigi mungfali (25 g dry) | about 140 | about 6.5 g |
| 6 soaked munakka (about 15 g) | about 45 | about 0.5 g |
| 1 glass whole cow’s milk (250 ml) | about 150 | about 8 g |
| Total | about 480 | about 23 g |
That plate sits squarely in the 300 to 500 calorie surplus range. But only if it’s added. Eat it instead of your usual paratha and you’ve gained nothing; eat it as well as a normal breakfast, or as a mid-morning meal between breakfast and lunch, and it does its job.
How to make it
- Night: rinse 40 g (about 1/4 cup) kala chana and soak in 3 times its volume of water. In a separate bowl soak 25 g raw red-skinned peanuts and 6 munakka in about 150 ml water. Put both bowls in the fridge in hot weather.
- Morning: drain the chana and throw that water away. Pressure-cook the chana with fresh water and a pinch of salt for 3 whistles on medium, then let the pressure drop by itself. It should be tender with a little bite.
- Drain the peanuts and munakka. Drink the sweet soaking water from the bowl if you like.
- Toss the warm chana and peanuts with a squeeze of lemon, a pinch of roasted jeera and chaat masala, and chopped onion if you enjoy it.
- Eat the munakka with the chaat, and drink the milk warm or cold alongside.
Why boil the chana, when plenty of people eat it raw after soaking? Lightly cooking makes it softer and easier on the stomach, and it’s the safer habit for anyone pregnant, older, with weak immunity, or feeding a child. Pushing it further: upgrades that add real calories
Weight not moving after three or four weeks? Add one or two of these, not all at once, since your stomach needs time to get used to eating more.
| Add | Extra calories | Extra protein |
|---|---|---|
| 1 medium banana | about 105 | about 1 g |
| 1 tsp desi ghee on the warm chana | about 45 | none |
| 1 boiled egg | about 75 | about 6 g |
| Buffalo milk instead of cow’s | about 100 more | about 1 g more |
| 5 soaked almonds | about 35 | about 1.3 g |
The banana and milk can also go into the blender: our homemade weight gain shakes and laddoos have measured recipes, and a shake is often easier than chewing through a big plate when appetite is low.
Low appetite? Try this
Split the plate in two. Have the chana and peanut chaat at 8 am and the munakka with milk at 11 am. Two small sittings go down far more easily than one big one, and the total is the same 480 calories.
How much soaked chana to eat daily
Half a katori to one katori of soaked chana a day (about 40 to 80 g dry) suits most adults. Going higher mostly adds gas. If chana makes you uncomfortable, start with a quarter katori, always throw away the soaking water, cook it rather than eating it raw, and add a pinch of hing or jeera. Most people’s stomachs settle within a couple of weeks.
Soaked kabuli chana works the same way; the numbers are close.
Myth: soaked chana and dry fruit “make blood” and build weight by themselves
A lot of desi weight-gain advice sees certain foods as special, as if chana, munakka or chuhara added weight on their own through their taseer. They don’t. Weight comes from total calories across the whole day, and muscle comes from protein plus strength work. That’s the whole secret.
Munakka and chana do bring iron, which is useful for many South Asian women and girls, but anaemia needs a blood test and proper treatment, not just a bowl of raisins. For the full list of popular totkay and which ones hold up, see weight gain home remedies, totkay and myths.
Making the weight go to muscle, not just the belly
- Protein through the day: spread it across meals rather than one big dose. The plate gives about 23 g; lunch and dinner should bring more from daal, dahi, eggs, chicken or paneer. Our guide to how much protein you need from desi sources gives the targets.
- Simple strength work, 3 times a week: squats to a chair, wall or knee push-ups, lunges, climbing stairs, and lifting filled water bottles. Add a few repetitions each week.
- Sleep: 7 to 9 hours. Muscle is built during rest, and short sleep also flattens appetite.
- Weigh weekly, same scale, same time, before breakfast. Day-to-day swings are just water.
Who needs a different plan
Teenagers and children
No “weight gain diet” for growing children. Give them family meals, milk, and snacks they enjoy, and ask a doctor to check their height and weight against growth charts if you’re worried. Never give children or teens gainer powders. Children under 5 must not get whole peanuts or chana because of choking; mash or grind them.
Older adults
Weight loss in older people often comes from poor appetite, loose dentures, medicines, loneliness or illness. Small, soft, frequent meals help, like well-boiled chana mashed into chaat. If weight keeps falling, see a doctor.
Diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease
A doctor or dietitian should shape any gain plan. Munakka and milk carry sugar, chana and peanuts carry potassium and phosphorus, and portions need to fit your readings and your medicines. If you take insulin or sugar tablets, don’t change meal timing sharply without asking, since that can bring a hypo.
Bhige chane with gur, a muthi of mungfali, and munakka in milk were the classic desi “taqat” foods, fed to growing boys, wrestlers in the akhara and new mothers. The food choice was right: cheap, filling, protein-rich. The real work, though, was done by plenty of food, hard physical labour and good sleep.

Soaked chana, mungfali and weight gain: questions answered
Does soaked chana increase weight?
Only as part of a daily calorie surplus. Half a katori adds about 145 calories, roughly one roti, so on its own it rarely changes the scale. Combined with peanuts, munakka and milk on top of normal meals, it helps.
Is black chana good for weight gain?
It’s a good food for a weight-gain diet because it brings protein and iron cheaply. Its high fibre fills you up fast, though, so pair it with denser foods like peanuts, milk, ghee or banana rather than relying on chana alone.
How much soaked chana should I eat daily?
Half a katori to one katori a day, about 40 to 80 g dry, suits most adults. More than that usually adds gas faster than it adds weight. Start smaller if chana upsets your stomach.
How much protein is in soaked chana?
About 19 to 20 g per 100 g of dry chana. Soaking roughly doubles the weight with water, so 100 g of soaked chana carries about 9 to 10 g of protein.
Soaked chana or roasted chana for weight gain, which is better?
Roasted chana is denser, so a handful carries more calories in less space, which helps when appetite is small. Soaked and boiled chana is softer and more filling. Both work; choose the one you can eat regularly.
How fast will I gain weight with this plate?
If the plate is truly added to your usual meals, a realistic pace is about 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week. Give it three to four weeks before judging, and weigh once a week rather than daily.
Is soaked cashew good for weight gain?
It helps a little: 5 cashews give about 45 calories. Soaking doesn’t add anything. A handful of cashews with milk is a fair add-on, but peanuts give more protein for less money.
Are weight gain powders from the market safe?
Unlabelled gainer powders, syrups and “herbal” wazan barhane products are not safe. They’ve repeatedly been found to hide steroids or appetite drugs. Real food, a measured shake, or a doctor’s advice is the safe route.
Can diabetics use soaked chana and peanuts for weight gain?
Chana and peanuts suit most people with diabetes, but munakka and a big glass of milk add sugar. Plan it with your doctor or dietitian, and check your readings, especially if you use insulin or tablets that can cause a hypo.
Why am I not gaining weight despite eating a lot?
Often it’s because the extra food replaces other meals rather than adding to them, or appetite drops later in the day. But a thyroid problem, diabetes, TB, coeliac disease or an infection can also be the reason, so see a doctor if weight won’t rise.
Soaked chana gives me gas. What can I do?
Throw away the soaking water, cook the chana well, start with a quarter katori, and add hing or jeera. Chew slowly. Most people’s gut adjusts within a couple of weeks of eating it regularly.
Should I eat bhigi mungfali or soaked chana for weight gain?
Peanuts, gram for gram, carry about one and a half times the calories of chana and are less filling, so they’re the stronger weight-gain food. Chana brings more fibre and iron. The plate uses both for balance.
Is it better to eat this plate at night?
Morning or mid-morning is easier for most people, because chana and peanuts are heavy late at night. A glass of milk with a few munakka before bed is fine if you want an extra small meal.
