Viral Hack Checked: Olive Oil and Lemon Shot Every Morning?
Verdict: Waste of money. A morning shot of olive oil and lemon juice adds about 120 kcal to your day, cleans nothing out of your liver or gut, and doesn’t pass gallstones. If you like the taste of good olive oil, put it on your salad instead.
The short version
- Verdict: Waste of money, and a small risk for people with gallstones.
- What’s in one shot: usually 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of olive oil plus the juice of half a lemon, roughly 120 to 130 kcal.
- What it can’t do: melt belly fat, clean the liver, or push out stones.
- What olive oil is good for: a healthy cooking and salad fat inside your normal meals.
- See a doctor: pain under the right ribs after fatty food, yellow eyes, or fever with belly pain.

The video always looks the same. A clean kitchen, a tiny glass, a golden pour of oil, a squeeze of nimbu, and a promise: drink this on an empty stomach and watch the bloating, the belly and the “toxins” disappear. Olive oil and lemon shot every morning is one of the most shared wellness clips of the last few years. It’s also one of the easiest to check, because the ingredients are simple and the body’s plumbing is well understood.
What the olive oil and lemon shot promises
Depending on who’s selling it, the shot is sold as a four-in-one fix: a liver cleanse, a gallstone flush, a belly-fat melter and a daily laxative. Big promises. Tiny glass. Some versions add garlic, ginger or honey, and a few ask you to drink a full cup of oil at night.
Each claim borrows a grain of truth and stretches it: olive oil is a healthy fat, lemon juice is sour and wakes up the mouth, and fat in the gut really does make the gallbladder squeeze, but none of that, however cleverly it’s stacked up on screen, adds up to what the video promises.
Why it doesn’t clean the liver
Your liver isn’t a pipe that gets clogged and needs rinsing; it’s a busy factory that breaks down and packs away waste around the clock, then hands it to the kidneys and the gut to leave the body, and it doesn’t store “toxins” that a spoon of oil can wash out.
What really loads the liver is steady, everyday stuff like too much sugar and refined flour, too many calories overall, alcohol and some medicines, and a fatty liver on an ultrasound improves with slow weight loss, less sugar and more movement. Extra oil, even good oil, adds calories to that picture rather than taking them away.
A spoonful of oil is food for the liver to process, not a broom for it.
Myth: the shot passes gallstones
This is the claim that sends people to hospital, so it deserves plain words. Gallstones sit in the gallbladder, a small bag under the liver on the right side, and fat in a meal tells that bag to squeeze out bile, so if a stone is sitting near the exit, a hard squeeze can push it into the narrow duct and jam it. That’s a gallstone attack: strong pain under the right ribs or in the upper belly, often after a heavy or fatty meal, sometimes with vomiting.
And the green “stones” people find after big oil flushes? They’re usually soft lumps formed in the gut from oil, lemon juice and digestive juices mixing together, a kind of soap. They float, they squash between the fingers, and real gallstones don’t behave like that. Our guide to the pitte ki pathri diet and the flush myth explains what people with stones can safely eat.
Does it help weight loss or belly fat?
No. A tablespoon of any oil carries roughly 120 kcal, the same as a medium chapati, so if you drink it every morning and don’t cut something else to make room, that’s extra energy sitting on top of your usual food, day after day, week after week. It adds up.
There’s no drink that melts fat from one spot. Belly fat goes down when overall body fat goes down, and a steady, honest pace is about 0.5 to 1 kg a week after the first week or two (early fast drops are mostly water). For South Asians, health risk starts at a lower size, so waist measurement is a useful check: about 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women are the common guidance points.
Some people say the shot keeps them full till lunch. Fair enough. Fat is slow to leave the stomach. But eggs, dahi or a bowl of daliya do the same job with protein and fibre attached. For what honestly blunts hunger, see natural appetite suppressants, myth vs fact.
And for constipation?
A little oil in food can soften stools slightly, and a warm drink first thing does wake up the bowel for many people. No shot needed. A glass of warm water, a proper breakfast with fibre, and a few minutes of walking do more, every day, without the calories.
Did you know? Morning bowel movements are partly driven by a reflex: eating or drinking stretches the stomach, and that signal sets the colon moving. Any warm drink can trigger it, which is why people credit whatever they sip.
Better ways to use olive oil and lemon
The two ingredients are good. The shot glass isn’t. Here’s how to get their real value inside meals.
- Salad dressing: 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, a pinch of salt and black pepper, whisked over a plate of kheera, tomato and onion.
- Warm lemon water instead: half a lemon in 250 ml warm (not boiling) water, sipped after brushing. No oil needed, and it’s close to zero calories.
- Cook with it gently: use 1 to 2 teaspoons per person for a sabzi or daal tarka, and count it as part of the day’s oil, not an extra.
- Drizzle at the end: a thin drizzle over hummus, chana chaat or grilled vegetables keeps the flavour where you can taste it.
- Protect your teeth: drink lemon water through a straw or with food, rinse with plain water after, and wait 30 minutes before brushing.
If you’re buying olive oil, labels matter more than the shot. Our zaitoon oil guide, extra virgin vs pomace covers which type to use for what.
Ginger shots get the same hype treatment, and the ginger shots routine autopsy weighs them up the same way.
Anyone with known gallstones, a past gallstone attack, or pancreatitis should not do oil shots or oil flushes. Lemon juice on an empty stomach can flare acidity and reflux. People on diabetes medicine (especially insulin or sulfonylureas) are at risk of low sugar if a shot replaces breakfast, and the doctor decides on any change to meals or medicines. Pregnant and breastfeeding women shouldn’t follow weight-loss hacks at all. Go to a doctor the same day for pain under the right ribs lasting more than a few hours, pain with fever or shivering, yellow eyes or skin, dark urine or pale stools. Unexplained weight loss always needs a check.
Olive oil and lemon shot: common questions
Is olive oil and lemon on an empty stomach good for you?
It isn’t harmful for most healthy people, but it doesn’t do what the videos promise. You get about 120 kcal of fat and some vitamin C. The same ingredients in a salad give you the benefit without the empty-stomach acidity.
Does olive oil and lemon clean the liver?
No. The liver clears waste all day on its own and doesn’t store anything a spoon of oil can wash out. Less sugar, less alcohol, slow weight loss and daily movement are what help a fatty liver.
Can olive oil and lemon remove gallstones?
No, and it can set off an attack. Fat makes the gallbladder squeeze, which can push a stone into the duct. The green lumps seen after a flush are soap-like clumps made in the gut, not stones.
Will an olive oil and lemon shot shrink belly fat?
No drink burns fat from the belly. One shot adds roughly the calories of a chapati. Belly fat falls only as total body fat falls, through eating a bit less and moving more over weeks.
How many calories are in a tablespoon of olive oil?
Roughly 120 kcal, about the same as any other cooking oil or ghee. Olive oil is a healthier type of fat, but it isn’t lighter.
Is olive oil and lemon good for constipation?
It may soften stools a little, but warm water, fibre at breakfast and a short walk do more without the calories. Constipation with blood, weight loss or a change that lasts weeks needs a doctor.
Is olive oil and lemon safe with acidity?
Better not on an empty stomach. Lemon and fat can both make reflux worse for some people. Have lemon with meals and keep oil inside food.
Is the shot safe with diabetes?
It won’t raise sugar much, but using it in place of breakfast can cause low sugar in people on insulin or sulfonylureas. Keep meals regular, and let your doctor decide on any changes to diet or medicines.
Which olive oil is best for drinking?
There’s no need to drink it. If you use it raw on salads, extra virgin has the best flavour. Pomace oil is for cooking, not for eating raw.
Does lemon water do the same thing?
Lemon water is a pleasant, near-zero-calorie drink that can replace sugary chai or a cold drink, which is its real benefit. It doesn’t melt fat or clean organs either.
What does gallstone pain feel like?
A strong, steady pain under the right ribs or in the upper middle belly, sometimes spreading to the back or right shoulder, often an hour or two after a heavy meal. Pain with fever, yellow eyes or lasting hours means a doctor the same day.
