Dark Lips (Honton Ki Siyahi): Real Causes and What Lightens Them

“Beta, itni chai mat piyo, honth kaale ho jayenge.” Every household has heard some version of that warning. It’s half right, which is more than most lip-darkening advice manages.

What actually darkens lips

Honton ki siyahi, dark or discoloured lips, usually comes from a combination of things building up over months or years, not one single cause. Hyperpigmentation from sun exposure is the biggest driver, lips have thin skin with little melanin protection, and unprotected sun over years darkens them the same way it darkens any repeatedly exposed skin. Smoking is a strong second cause, the heat and chemicals in cigarette smoke darken the lip line specifically, often unevenly, following where the cigarette sits.

Constant licking is a quieter cause people underestimate. Saliva evaporates and pulls moisture out of the lip skin, leaving it dry, which triggers more licking, which darkens and roughens the border further. Strong tea and coffee, drunk very hot and very often, can stain the surface slightly and dry the lips, though the tannin-staining itself is minor compared to sun and smoking. Some medications, and certain minerals like iron deficiency, can also affect lip colour, so if darkening appeared suddenly with no clear cause, that’s worth mentioning to a doctor rather than assuming it’s totka-fixable.

The short version

  • Biggest cause: unprotected sun exposure over years
  • Second cause: smoking, dries and darkens the lip line
  • Quiet cause: constant licking, which dries and irritates
  • Realistic timeline to see change: 6 to 10 weeks of consistent care, sun protection is permanent

Myth: beetroot juice lightens dark lips

Beetroot juice stains the lips a temporary pink or red on contact, the same way it stains your fingers or a chopping board. That colour washes off within hours and does nothing to the melanin causing actual darkening underneath. People confuse the temporary pink tint for a “fix” because it looks better in the mirror for a few hours. It is makeup, essentially, not treatment.

Myth: lemon juice lightens lip pigmentation

Lemon juice is acidic enough to irritate the thin lip skin, and repeated use can actually worsen darkening by causing low-grade irritation, which the skin sometimes responds to with more pigment, not less. Skip it on lips entirely. This is one of the more common totkay that actively works against the goal.

Buying the right balm without overpaying

Look for petroleum jelly, shea butter, or beeswax high on the ingredient list for the night balm, these are proven occlusive moisturisers that lock in hydration without irritating the lip skin. For the SPF balm, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based formulas tend to sit better on lips than chemical sunscreens, which can sting if you lick your lips out of habit, and licking is exactly the habit we’re trying to break here. You don’t need an imported brand, a local pharmacy SPF balm with these ingredients does the same job.

What genuinely helps, step by step

  1. Apply an SPF 30 or higher lip balm every morning, reapply if out in strong sun for hours, non-negotiable step for any lightening to hold
  2. At night, apply a small dot, about a quarter teaspoon, of pure ghee or a thick balm and let it sit while you sleep
  3. Once or twice a week, gently rub a damp soft toothbrush or a wet muslin cloth over lips for 15 seconds to lift dry, flaking skin, never scrub raw
  4. Stop or cut down smoking, this alone often shows visible change within weeks
  5. Reduce licking by keeping a balm in your pocket or bag for the moment lips feel dry, before the licking habit kicks in

SPF lip balm is doing the real work

This is the step most totkay skip entirely and it’s the one with the strongest basis. Sun protection prevents new pigment from forming while whatever you’re using at night has a chance to gently fade existing pigment. Without daily SPF, you’re refilling the darkening faster than any night treatment can undo it. A basic SPF 30 lip balm from any pharmacy is enough, you do not need an expensive imported one.

Ghee at night, honestly assessed

Ghee moisturises deeply and can reduce the look of dryness and flaking, which makes lips appear smoother and slightly less patchy in a week or two. It does not bleach or lighten pigment on its own. Think of it as the moisturising half of the routine, with SPF as the protective half, and patience as the third ingredient nobody wants to hear about.

ApproachRealistic effect
Beetroot or lemon juiceTemporary tint or irritation, no real change
Daily SPF lip balmPrevents further darkening, essential first step
Ghee or thick balm at nightMoisturises, smooths texture, supports fading over weeks
Quitting smokingOften the single biggest visible change

Our post on Chapped Lips Home Remedy covers cracking and flaking specifically, which often overlaps with darkening since dry, damaged lip skin tends to look duller and patchier regardless of pigment.

Diet, hydration and the things that get blamed unfairly

Spicy food does not darken lips despite the common belief, though it can cause temporary irritation and swelling in people sensitive to chilli, which sometimes gets mistaken for pigment change. Dehydration makes lips look duller and more prone to flaking, which reads as “worse colour” even when actual pigment hasn’t changed, so drinking enough water through the day is a small but real part of lips looking their best.

Cheap, low-quality lipsticks with unlisted ingredients can occasionally cause a reaction called contact dermatitis at the lip border, which resolves once the product is stopped, but people sometimes attribute this to “the lipstick darkening my lips” when it’s actually irritation and post-inflammatory darkening. If a specific lipstick or balm seems to coincide with new darkening, stop using it for a month and see if things improve before assuming it’s unrelated.

What a realistic weekly routine looks like

Morning: SPF lip balm, reapplied after eating or drinking. Daytime: keep a plain balm handy to interrupt the licking habit before it starts. Night: cleanse lips gently if you wore lipstick, apply ghee or a thick balm, and once weekly, a gentle 15-second buff with a soft toothbrush. That’s the whole routine, repeated for two to three months before judging results.

How it was used

Ghee or malai (cream) at night is a long-standing household habit across South Asian homes for dry lips generally, valued for its moisturising effect rather than any specific lightening claim. Elders used it as ordinary winter upkeep, the same as oiling hands and feet, not as a targeted pigment treatment.

Take care if

Sudden lip darkening with no clear cause, especially with new dark patches inside the mouth, swelling, or a changing mole-like spot, needs a doctor’s evaluation rather than a home routine, since it can occasionally point to something beyond ordinary pigmentation. Avoid lemon or harsh scrubs on cracked, bleeding, or already irritated lips. If you’re pregnant, some skin darkening including on the lips is common and usually settles after delivery, mention it at a check-up rather than worrying alone.

Protect first, moisturise second, and let the rest be patience.
How long before dark lips lighten with SPF and ghee?

Expect gradual change over 6 to 10 weeks with consistent daily SPF use, longer for pigment that built up over many years.

Does smoking cause permanent lip darkening?

Much of it fades after quitting, though very long-term smokers may see partial, slower improvement rather than a full return to original colour.

Can I use a scrub on my lips daily?

No, once or twice a week is enough. Daily scrubbing irritates the thin lip skin and can make darkening worse.

Are tinted lip balms with SPF a good option?

Yes, a tinted SPF balm protects and gives cosmetic coverage at the same time, a reasonable everyday choice.

Does drinking more water lighten dark lips?

It won’t lighten pigment directly but it reduces dryness and flaking, which makes lips look and feel healthier while your actual routine does the work.
