Kasturi (Mushk, Musk): Real vs Fake, Price, Law and Substitutes

Real kasturi (musk, mushk) comes from a small gland on a male musk deer, and almost everything sold as “original kasturi” in a bazaar is either synthetic or fake. Wild musk deer from Pakistan, India, Nepal and their neighbours are on the strictest list of the world’s wildlife trade treaty, so honest buyers today choose plant or lab-made musk instead.

Quick facts

  • Names: musk (English), kasturi or mushk (Urdu, Hindi), misk (Arabic, Unani books).
  • Source: the musk pod (a pouch-like gland) under the belly skin of an adult male musk deer.
  • Law: CITES Appendix I for the Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and Afghanistan populations since 1983.
  • Legal swaps: mushkdana (musk mallow seed), lab-made musks in perfume, and products that state “synthetic musk”.
  • Not the same: kasturi haldi (wild turmeric) and kasturi methi have nothing to do with the deer.

What is kasturi, and where does it really come from?

Musk deer are shy, small deer of Himalayan forests. They have no antlers. The males carry long upper canine teeth that look like little tusks, and a gland about the size of a walnut near the navel. During the rutting season that gland fills with a dark, waxy, grainy material. Dried, it smells sharp and animal at first and turns warm and soft as it fades. That dried material is musk.

The trouble is the harvest. Traditionally the pod was cut out of a hunted deer, which means one dead male for one small pod, and snares don’t choose. They catch females and young deer that carry no pod at all. Some farms in China have tried scraping musk from living captive deer, but that supply is small and tightly controlled.

A word on the name. Search “kasturi” and you’ll also find kasturi haldi (a wild turmeric used in face packs), kasturi methi (dried fenugreek leaves) and kasturi bhindi (musk mallow). These are plants. They borrow the word because of their smell, or because “kasturi” sounds precious.

What do people say, what does tradition say, and what’s our honest take?

The famous claim

On YouTube and in bazaar talk, kasturi is a heart tonic, a strength-giver, a fix for weakness in men and women, and a fragrance that “lasts for years”. Sellers add that real kasturi floats, burns without melting, or makes your eyes water.

What tradition says

In the old books

Unani texts class misk as hot and dry and use tiny amounts in mufarrehat (exhilarant or “heart-cheering” compounds) and in khamiras for faintness, low spirits and palpitations. Ayurveda uses kasturi in some classical formulas too. Perfumers prized it as a fixative that makes other scents last on skin.

Our honest take

Skip it For a home buyer, real deer musk isn’t worth chasing. The perfume role is real; the health promises have no good modern support, and the odds that a bazaar “original” is genuine are poor. If you want the tradition, buy a registered compound and read its label (our look at Dawa ul Misk jawahar wali vs sada covers what that price gap buys). For scent, synthetic or plant musk does the job without the law or the deer.

Why is real musk priced like gold?

  • Tiny yield. One adult male gives one small pod, and only part of that weight is usable musk once the skin and hair are removed.
  • Slow, wild animals. Musk deer live in steep, high forest and are hard to raise in numbers.
  • The law. International commercial trade in the South Asian populations is banned under CITES Appendix I. Anything that moves does so as contraband, and smuggling risk is built into the price.
  • Middlemen and grading. Poachers sell to local dealers, who sell on across borders. A 2026 analysis of six years of wildlife crime cases in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley listed musk deer among the most frequently seized species.
  • Blending. Even “genuine” pods are often padded with blood, liver, soil or lead shot to add weight.
The rarest thing in a musk pod sold on a footpath is musk.

What did kasturi cost years ago, and what should you expect now?

We could not find a dated, checkable public record (a customs figure, an auction result or a news report with a clear unit) that gives a fair retail price for genuine musk in Pakistan or India, then or now. So we won’t print one. People search for “kasturi price 1 tola in Pakistan” and get numbers from sellers, and those numbers describe what a seller hopes you’ll pay, not what real musk is worth.

What we can say honestly: wild musk has been one of the most expensive animal products in the world for centuries, often compared with gold by weight. Since the 1980s ban the legal supply for South Asian buyers has been close to nil, so any legal price trend is mostly a story about synthetic musk, which is cheap. Treat this as a guide for October 2026, not a quote; prices and law both move.

How do you tell real from fake, and buy legally?

Home tests don’t settle it. Burning a grain, floating it, or rubbing it on paper tells you little, because fakers know those tricks and mix in materials that pass them. Smell can’t be trusted either: modern synthetic musks are made to smell like the real thing. Only a lab can identify deer musk.

  1. Decide what you actually want: a fragrance, or a traditional compound.
  2. For fragrance, buy a perfume or attar that says “synthetic musk”, “white musk” or “plant musk” on the label. That’s the legal, honest product.
  3. For a Unani compound, buy from a pharmacy and look for the DRAP enlistment or registration number on the pack (in India, the AYUSH licence details).
  4. Walk away from any seller offering a whole pod, a “hiran ki kasturi” in a twist of paper, or a video of a deer. You’d be buying a fake or a crime.
  5. Patch test any new attar: a dab on the inner arm, wait 48 hours, and skip it if you get redness or itching.

Mushkdana (musk mallow seed, Abelmoschus moschatus). The seeds of a hibiscus relative smell softly musky. Perfumers use the seed oil (ambrette) as a natural musk note.

Synthetic musks. Labs have made musk-smelling molecules for over a century. Most “musk” perfumes today use them, and they cost a fraction of anything animal.

Household and cosmetic amounts: a perfume oil is used neat as sold only if the label says it’s skin-ready; if you’re blending your own from a concentrate, keep it to a few drops in a teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier oil and patch test first. For any compound taken by mouth, the pack or a qualified practitioner sets the amount. We don’t give one.

What are the risks of kasturi products?

Before you buy or use it

Fake pods and loose “kasturi” powders have no quality control: they may hold dirt, animal tissue, heavy metals or undeclared drugs, so never take an unlabelled powder by mouth. Keep all musk products away from children. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, people on heart, blood pressure or blood-thinning medicine, and anyone with epilepsy should talk to their doctor before taking any compound that lists musk. Buying, selling or carrying wildlife musk can bring prosecution under national wildlife laws. Stop and get medical help for a rash that spreads, swelling of the lips or face, chest pain, fainting or a racing heartbeat.

Kasturi tablets and “kasturi pills” sold for babies’ colds or men’s strength deserve particular care. A tablet that promises a lot and lists little may hide steroids or other medicines, a problem we cover in our piece on heavy metals in herbal and Unani medicine. Babies should get nothing of this kind without a doctor’s say.

Kasturi questions people ask most

What is the price of real kasturi in Pakistan per tola?

There’s no reliable public price, because trade in South Asian deer musk is banned. Figures you see online come from sellers, and a cheap “original” is almost certainly fake. Lab-made musk perfumes are the legal, affordable option.

Is it legal to buy kasturi in Pakistan or India?

Not deer musk from wild South Asian deer. Their populations sit on CITES Appendix I, which bans international commercial trade, and both countries protect musk deer under their own wildlife laws. Synthetic and plant musks are fine.

Real kasturi ki pehchan kaise karein?

You can’t do it reliably at home. Burning, floating and smell tests are known to fakers and are easy to pass. Only a lab can confirm deer musk, so judge the seller and the label instead.

Kasturi hiran se kaise nikalti hai?

It’s the dried contents of a gland near the navel of an adult male musk deer. Traditionally the deer was killed to remove it, which is why the species declined and the trade was banned.

What is kasturi attar made of?

Almost always synthetic musk in an oil base, sometimes with ambrette (musk mallow) or other notes. That’s fine if it’s labelled honestly. A cheap attar sold as “pure deer kasturi” is mislabelled.

What are the side effects of kasturi?

Perfume use can cause skin irritation or allergy, so patch test. Swallowed products carry the bigger risks: unknown fillers, heavy metals or hidden drugs in unlabelled powders and pills. People with heart conditions, pregnancy or regular medicines should ask a doctor first.

Is kasturi haldi the same as kasturi?

No. Kasturi haldi is a wild turmeric root used in face packs. It has no link to the musk deer, though it shares the name.

Can kasturi be given to babies?

No, not without a doctor. Products sold as kasturi tablets for babies’ coughs and colds have no good evidence behind them and unknown contents. A baby with a cough, fever or breathing trouble needs a doctor.

What are kasturi benefits for males and females?

Tradition calls it a strengthening, heart-cheering ingredient for both. Modern evidence for those claims is lacking, and most products don’t contain real musk anyway. Tiredness or low mood that lasts weeks is worth a doctor’s check.

What is mushkdana?

Mushkdana is the seed of musk mallow, a plant in the hibiscus family. Its musky smell made it the classic plant stand-in for deer musk in perfumery.
