Real vs Fake Kasturi
Stay till the end to learn the one legal way to enjoy kasturi without breaking the law.
What is Kasturi?
Real kasturi comes from a tiny walnut-sized gland under a male musk deer's belly. When the animal mates, the gland fills with a dark, grainy wax that dries into a strong, animal-smelling powder.
Traditional claims vs truth
Bazaar sellers shout that kasturi is a heart tonic, a strength booster, and a fragrance that lasts years. Ancient Unani texts call it hot and dry, used only in tiny doses for faintness or low spirits.
Ban year
International trade of South Asian musk has been banned since 1983 under CITES Appendix I.
Why it’s pricey
Only one pod comes from each adult male, and just a fraction of its weight is usable. The deer live in steep Himalayan forests and are hard to farm, while the law makes any commercial trade illegal.
Buy legally
If you want a scent, choose a perfume that clearly says synthetic or plant musk on the label. For a Unani remedy, buy from a licensed pharmacy and check the DRAP registration number. Walk away from anyone offering a whole pod or a video of a deer.
Legal substitutes
The common legal substitutes are mushkdana seed oil, known as ambrette, and a range of lab-made musk molecules. Both smell musky, cost a fraction of animal musk, and are safe for everyday use.
Safety warnings
Fake pods and loose powders often contain dirt, animal tissue, heavy metals or undeclared drugs, so never ingest unlabelled powder. Keep all musk products away from children, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should consult a doctor before use. Possessing wildlife musk can lead to legal trouble.
