Ambergris Price, Real vs Fake, Law and Unani Use (Ambar)

Ambergris (ambar, anbar ashhab) is a waxy lump that forms in the gut of a sperm whale, floats for years at sea and turns from a smelly black mass into a pale, sweet, earthy treasure for perfumers. It’s rare. It’s often faked, and in India and many other countries just owning it can land you in court.

In brief

  • Names: ambergris (English), ambar or anbar (Urdu, Arabic), anbar ashhab for the prized grey grade.
  • Source: sperm whales only, a species on CITES Appendix I.
  • Uses: perfume fixative; in Unani, a tiny part of compounds like khamira ambari.
  • Price signal: a Thai beach find in 2021 was valued at up to US$40,000 per kg in news reports.
  • Not to confuse with: amber (kahruba), which is fossil tree resin.

What is ambergris, and how does it form?

Sperm whales eat squid, lots of them, and squid have hard, sharp beaks that the whale can’t digest, so most of those beaks simply get vomited back up. Not all. Some pass deeper into the gut, and there, the theory goes, the whale’s intestine wraps them in a fatty, waxy material to protect itself. That lump leaves the whale, sometimes when the whale dies, and floats.

Fresh ambergris is dark, soft and smells of dung. Truly. Years of sun, salt water and air change it. It hardens and lightens through brown and grey towards white, and the smell turns sweet, woody, a bit like tobacco and sea air. The grey and white pieces (anbar ashhab in old texts) are the ones perfumers want. That’s why the “whale vomit” nickname is half right: much of it probably leaves from the other end.

Inside, perfumers value a compound called ambrein. It’s the key. As it breaks down in air and light it produces the soft, lasting notes people call “amber” in perfume.

What do people say, what does tradition say, and what’s our honest take?

The famous claim

Online, ambergris is a strength tonic for men, a heart medicine, a skin glow, a spiritual protector and a lottery ticket you might find on a beach. “Ambergris benefits for male” is one of the top searches.

The traditional view

Unani physicians rank anbar as hot and dry, a mufarreh (cheering, strengthening agent) for the heart and brain, and add small amounts to compounds such as khamira gaozaban ambari and some majoons. Arab and Persian perfumers used it for centuries to fix scents and to scent food and coffee.

Our honest take

Skip it Its perfume value is real and well documented. Its health promises are tradition, with no good modern backing, and the law, which in India covers simply keeping a lump in your cupboard, makes buying it a poor idea for most readers whatever the seller swears about where it came from. If you want the traditional compound, our comparison of khamira gaozaban ambari jawahar wala vs sada explains what you pay for. For scent, lab-made ambrox-type notes give the same feel legally.

Why is ambergris so expensive?

  • Only one source. Only sperm whales make it, and only a small share of them do.
  • Chance, not farming. Nobody can produce it. Nobody. It turns up on beaches or in dead whales.
  • Ageing. The pale, sweet grades need years at sea. Fresh black lumps are worth far less.
  • The law. The sperm whale is on CITES Appendix I, and countries such as India protect it under national wildlife law. Fewer legal sellers means higher prices where trade is allowed.
  • Grading and testing. Buyers pay for certificates and lab checks, and the price swings wildly with colour, smell and hardness.

What has ambergris sold for, and what should you expect?

We only use figures from dated reports. Each is a valuation, not a confirmed sale.

Date and placeReported figureSource
October 2021, Surat Thani, ThailandAbout 30 kg valued at up to US$1.2 million, up to US$40,000 per kgThe National
October 2026, Bavla, Ahmedabad, India4.354 kg seized, valued by police at Rs 4.35 croreGujarat Samachar

Read those carefully. The Thai figure is a hoped-for price for a certified lump. The Indian figure is a police valuation in a seizure, which is a guess at black-market value, not a price anyone legally paid. We found no trustworthy record of what ambergris cost in Pakistani or Indian bazaars decades ago, so we won’t invent one. Treat these as a guide for October 2026, not a quote: prices move, and much of what’s offered at a “bargain” is fake.

Real or fake, and how to buy legally?

Fakes are everywhere. Candle wax, resin, soap, fat, even shaped plastic, sometimes scented with synthetic amber notes. The well-known “hot needle” test (real ambergris melts into a dark, sticky liquid and smells sweet) is a rough first screen used by beachcombers, but a lab is the only proof. Don’t heat unknown lumps indoors or near your face. Ever.

  1. If you live in India, don’t buy or keep ambergris. Possession and sale are prosecuted under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
  2. In other countries, check your national wildlife authority before buying or selling a find; rules differ, and in the US the sperm whale is listed as endangered.
  3. For perfume, choose products that say “ambrox”, “amber accord” or “synthetic ambergris”. They’re legal. They’re consistent. And they won’t get you arrested or leave you holding a lump of beach wax that cost a month’s salary.
  4. For a Unani compound, buy a registered product from a pharmacy and check the DRAP number (Pakistan) or AYUSH licence (India) on the pack.
  5. If you find a lump on a beach, photograph it, note where, and ask your fisheries or wildlife office before you try to sell it.

How is it used, and how much?

In perfumery, ambergris is dissolved in alcohol and left to mature as a tincture for months, then a small share goes into a finished scent. At home, use any amber perfume as the label directs and patch test new attars on the inner arm for 48 hours. If you’re diluting a perfume concentrate yourself, a few drops in a teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier oil is a common starting point.

For compounds taken by mouth, such as khamira ambari, the pack or a qualified practitioner sets the amount. We don’t give one.

What are the risks?

Worth knowing first

Unlabelled “ambar” powders, pills and pastes can contain anything, including heavy metals and hidden drugs; don’t swallow them. Ambar compounds are usually sweet and rich, so people with diabetes should read the sugar content and ask their doctor. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and people taking heart, blood pressure or blood-thinning medicines should speak to a doctor before using any ambar compound. Stop and seek help for a spreading rash, swelling of the face or lips, chest pain or fainting. Owning or selling ambergris is a crime in India and restricted in many places.

We cover the heavy-metal side in more depth in heavy metals in herbal and Unani medicine, and more of the series lives at Unani & Herbal, Decoded.

What is ambergris price per kg?

Reported values vary hugely. A 2021 news report from Thailand put a certified find at up to US$40,000 per kg. Grade, colour and legality change the price, and most cheap offers are fakes. Treat any figure as a guide, not a quote.

Is ambergris whale vomit?

Partly a myth. It forms in the sperm whale’s intestine around squid beaks, and much of it is thought to pass out the other end. “Whale vomit” stuck as a catchy name.

Is ambergris legal in India?

No. The sperm whale is protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, and police regularly arrest people for possessing or selling ambergris. Don’t buy it, keep it or sell it there.

Ambergris price in Pakistan?

We found no reliable dated public record of a fair price. Online sellers quote widely different figures, and many lumps are wax or resin. Perfumes with synthetic amber notes are the honest, affordable route.

What happens if you find ambergris on the beach?

First, don’t assume it’s real; many finds are wax or fat. Note the place, photograph it, and contact your fisheries or wildlife authority, because keeping or selling it may be illegal where you live.

Real ambergris vs fake: how can you tell?

Real pieces are light, waxy, float, and smell sweet and marine; a hot needle melts them into dark sticky liquid. Fakers copy all of that, so only a lab test is proof.

Ambergris kya hota hai?

Ambergris (ambar) is a waxy substance made in the gut of sperm whales. After years floating in the sea it becomes fragrant and is used to fix perfumes and in some Unani compounds.

What are ambergris benefits for males?

Tradition calls ambar a strengthening tonic, but there’s no good modern evidence for it. Most products sold for men don’t contain real ambergris, and some hide undeclared drugs. Talk to a doctor about the real cause of any problem.

Can you eat ambergris?

Historically it flavoured food and drinks in some cultures, but don’t eat a lump or an unlabelled powder. Unknown contents and the law make it a bad idea.

Is ambergris the same as amber?

No. Amber (kahruba) is fossilised tree resin. Ambergris is a whale product. The names overlap because both were prized and golden-hued.

Does ambergris have side effects on skin?

Any perfume material can irritate or cause allergy, so patch test for 48 hours. Most “ambergris” perfumes use synthetic notes, which are tested for skin safety.
