How Many Roti Per Day for Weight Loss? A Plate Guide for Men
How many roti per day for weight loss? Most men do well on about 2 medium roti per meal, with half the plate filled by sabzi or salad, then adjust by hunger and how the waist tape moves. Roti isn’t the enemy. The third and fourth roti, the ghee on top and the empty half of the plate are.
In brief
- A medium chapati: roughly 100 to 120 kcal, depending on size and atta. Home roti vary a lot.
- Starting point for most men losing weight: 2 medium roti at lunch and at dinner, or one meal with rice instead
- The real lever: half the plate vegetables, a quarter daal, chicken, egg or fish
- Ghee on roti: a teaspoon of ghee adds about 40 to 45 kcal, so it counts
- Rule worth remembering: count the roti, then fill the gap with sabzi, not another roti

How big is a “medium” roti?
About the size of a dinner plate’s inner circle, roughly 15 to 17 cm across, made from a ball of dough a bit bigger than a golf ball. A tandoori roti from the naan shop is larger and thicker; one of those can be worth close to two home roti. A paratha with ghee folded through is a different food altogether.
| Type | Rough size | Rough energy |
|---|---|---|
| Small home chapati | About 12 to 14 cm | 70 to 90 kcal |
| Medium home chapati | About 15 to 17 cm | 100 to 120 kcal |
| Large or tandoori roti | Hand-span or bigger | 150 to 250 kcal |
| Plain paratha | Medium, with ghee | Often 250 kcal or more |
These are honest ranges, not lab numbers. For weighed comparisons see calories in tandoori roti, naan and paratha. Whole wheat chakki atta keeps you fuller than maida for the same size, thanks to the fibre, though the energy is similar.
So how many roti a day is right for me?
There is no single number, because a labourer and an accountant don’t burn the same fuel. But a workable starting point for a man who sits at a desk most of the day:
- Breakfast: one roti or one slice of bread with egg, or a bowl of daliya. Skip the paratha on weekdays.
- Lunch: 2 medium roti, a katori of daal or salan, and a full katori of sabzi or salad
- Dinner: 2 medium roti, or 1 roti plus a small katori of rice, with half the plate vegetables
- Check after 2 weeks: waist going down slowly and not starving? Keep it. Hungry all afternoon? Add more sabzi or protein first, not roti.
A worked example. A man who is 165 cm, 65 kg and has a 102 cm waist currently eats 3 roti at lunch and 4 at dinner, each with a little ghee. Dropping to 2 and 2, without ghee, removes roughly 3 roti and 3 teaspoons of ghee a day. That’s very roughly 400 to 500 kcal a day, which is about the kind of gap that leads to steady, honest loss of around half a kilo a week. He hasn’t given up roti. He’s eating a normal amount of it.
Don’t cut so hard that your daily total falls below about 1,500 kcal; men shouldn’t go lower without medical supervision.
Two roti and a full half-plate of sabzi beats one roti and a growling stomach at 11 pm.
What does the plate look like with katoris?
Picture a normal dinner plate. Half goes to sabzi, salad or raita without sugar. A quarter is protein: a katori of daal, chicken salan, two eggs or fish. The last quarter holds your 2 roti or a small katori of rice. This is the same shape as the healthy plate used by public health bodies, just in desi clothes. Our desi plate method guide has photos of the katori sizes.
Is rice better or worse than roti?
Neither wins outright. A small katori of cooked rice is roughly in the same range as one to one and a half medium roti. Rice is just easier to overeat because it goes down fast. Swap like for like, and don’t have both piled high at the same meal. The full comparison lives in roti or rice for weight loss.
What about dawats and shaadi meals?
Shaadi season can undo a month in a weekend. A few tactics that work without offending anyone:
- Take salad and raita first, then one naan or roti and protein. Skip the second round of naan.
- Choose either rice or naan, not both. Biryani counts as the rice.
- Eat dessert slowly, a small portion, and enjoy it. No guilt, just no seconds.
- Walk for 15 minutes when you get home, even if it’s late and the children are asleep in the car
Tell the cook, kindly
Ask for roti to be made a bit smaller rather than counting fewer of them. Two smaller roti feel like a full meal in a way that one large roti never does, and nobody at the table needs to notice.
Why does cutting out roti completely usually backfire?
Because it’s hard to live with. Most men who drop roti entirely last a few weeks, feel deprived at every family meal, then swing back to four at a sitting. Whole wheat roti also brings fibre that keeps you full and regular. The steady approach, fewer and smaller roti with more vegetables, is the one that survives Eid, guests and a busy week. If you have diabetes and take insulin or sulfonylurea medicine, cutting roti suddenly can drop your sugar too low; talk to your doctor before changing your meals, and never adjust your medicine yourself. Kidney disease changes protein and potassium advice, so ask before piling on daal and vegetables. Coeliac disease needs gluten-free flours, not just fewer roti. If you’re losing weight without trying, see a doctor.
Roti and weight loss: questions men ask
How many roti should a man eat per day to lose weight?
Around 4 to 5 medium roti across the day suits many desk-working men, with half of each plate vegetables. Adjust by hunger and how your waist changes.
How many calories are in one roti?
A medium home chapati is roughly 100 to 120 kcal. A large tandoori roti can be 150 to 250 kcal.
Can I eat roti at night and still lose weight?
Yes. What matters is how many and how late. Two roti with plenty of sabzi, finished a few hours before bed, is fine.
Is chapati good for weight loss?
Whole wheat chapati is a reasonable carb for weight loss because of its fibre. The portion and what you put on it decide the result.
Is roti with ghee bad for weight loss?
Not bad, just extra. A teaspoon of ghee adds about 40 to 45 kcal, so keep it to one roti or skip it on weekdays.
Which atta is best for weight loss?
Whole wheat chakki atta or mixed grain atta keeps you fuller than maida. Jau, bajra or jowar mixed in is fine too.
Should I stop eating roti if I am diabetic?
No, but portion matters. Follow your doctor’s or dietitian’s plan, and don’t cut carbs suddenly if you take insulin or sulfonylureas.
Is one roti equal to one bowl of rice?
Not quite. A small katori of cooked rice is closer to one to one and a half medium roti.
Can I lose weight without giving up roti?
Yes. Most men lose weight steadily by eating fewer, smaller roti with more vegetables, not by giving them up.
