Dentures Care (Naqli Daant): Cleaning, Fit, Sores and Eating
Dentures (naqli daant) need three things every day: a brushing without toothpaste, a night out of the mouth in plain water or a denture soak, and a quick look at the gums. Get those right and most sores, bad smell and loose fits either don’t happen or get caught early.
Before you start
- Clean: after every meal rinse; once a day brush with a soft denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner
- Night: out for at least 6 to 8 hours, soaking in cool water or a denture soak
- Never: hot or boiling water, bleach, or regular toothpaste
- See the dentist: for a sore that won’t heal in 2 weeks, a loose fit, or clicking and slipping when eating

How to clean dentures every day
A denture is made of acrylic, a plastic that scratches more easily than real enamel. Scratches hold food, stains and germs, and that’s where the sour smell comes from, the one families notice when they lean in close and the parent has no idea about. So be gentle. And thorough.
- Fill the sink with about 5 cm of water or lay a folded towel in it. A dropped denture can crack on a hard basin.
- Take the denture out and rinse off food under cool running water.
- Brush every surface, including the pink part that sits on the gums, with a soft denture brush and a drop of mild hand soap or denture paste. Take about 2 minutes.
- Rinse well, so no soap taste remains.
- Brush the gums, tongue and roof of the mouth with a very soft toothbrush, or wipe with a clean damp cloth wrapped on a finger. If some natural teeth remain, brush them with fluoride toothpaste as normal.
- Scrape off old adhesive from both the denture and the gums before putting new adhesive on.
Why no toothpaste on the denture? Most toothpastes are mildly gritty. Grit is fine on enamel but slowly scuffs acrylic, making it dull and rougher over the years.
Overnight soaking: what to use and why
Gums need rest. Wearing dentures round the clock keeps the gums covered, warm and damp, which is exactly what thrush (a yeast infection) loves. It also speeds up bone shrinkage under the denture.
- Plain cool water is fine for most people. A denture left dry can warp.
- Denture soaking tablets from the chemist help lift stains and germs. Follow the pack for time, then rinse the denture well before wearing.
- A weak vinegar soak (1 part white vinegar to 1 part water for about 20 minutes, then rinse) is a common household way to soften tartar on full acrylic dentures. Skip it for dentures with metal clasps, which it can dull.
- Never bleach on metal parts, and never hot water, which bends acrylic out of shape
Keep the soaking cup covered and out of reach of children and pets. Dogs love chewing dentures. Really.
Any sore, white or red patch, or lump in the mouth that hasn’t healed in 2 weeks needs a dentist or doctor to look, even if it doesn’t hurt. Mouth cancer is common in South Asia, especially with paan, chaalia, gutka, naswar or smoking, and denture wearers can miss it because they blame the denture. Get help the same day for swelling of the face or under the jaw with fever, trouble swallowing or breathing, or a denture piece that may have been swallowed. Also watch for weight loss or refusing food, which can mean the mouth hurts too much to eat. Stroke signs, sudden confusion, or not eating or drinking for a whole day need a doctor that day.
Loose dentures and sores: what’s going on
Once teeth are gone the jawbone slowly shrinks, year by year, because nothing is pressing on it the way roots once did, but the denture stays exactly the same size. Simple. So a denture that fitted perfectly five years ago will slip, rub and click today. Weight loss after an illness can do the same thing faster.
A slipping denture rubs one spot again and again. That’s where a painful ulcer forms. Signs it’s time for a dental check:
- Clicking or dropping when talking
- Food getting trapped under it
- Needing more and more adhesive to keep it in
- Cracks at the corners of the mouth (these can also be yeast or low vitamins)
- A sore spot in the same place each time
The dentist can reline (add a new fitting layer), adjust or replace the denture. Please don’t file or bend it at home, and don’t glue a cracked denture with shop glue; it can be toxic and ruins the fit.
Easing a sore spot for a day or two
Leave the denture out as much as possible. Rinse with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) a few times a day. Eat soft food. If it isn’t better within about a week, the denture needs adjusting.
Eating with new dentures: a soft-food transition
New dentures feel huge. Chewing becomes a skill to learn all over again, with the tongue, cheeks and lips slowly working out how to hold a loose plate steady while the jaw moves, and that retraining usually takes a few weeks rather than a few days.
| Stage | What to eat |
|---|---|
| First days | Khichdi, daliya, soft daal, dahi, mashed aloo, soups, custard |
| Week 1 to 2 | Soft roti torn small, well-cooked sabzi, fish, minced meat (qeema), eggs |
| After 2 to 4 weeks | Most foods, cut small; tough meat, nuts and whole apples last |
Cut food small and chew on both sides at once, which keeps the denture stable. Bite with the side teeth, not the front. Sticky mithai and chewing gum pull dentures loose. Hot tea can burn because the denture blocks heat on the roof of the mouth, so test the temperature on the lip first.
If eating has dropped for weeks, look at our guide on appetite loss in elderly parents. A painful mouth is a common hidden reason.
A 30-second night check
When the denture comes out at night, shine a phone torch into the mouth. Look at the gums, the tongue, under the tongue and the inside of the cheeks. You’re looking for red, white or raw patches. It takes half a minute and catches problems months earlier.
Myth: dentures mean you can skip the dentist
Many families think the dentist is only for real teeth. But the gums, bone and fit change every year, and the dentist also screens for mouth cancer. A check every 12 months is a sensible habit, sooner with any problem. Naqli daant questions people search
How do you clean dentures at home?
Rinse after each meal and brush once a day with a soft denture brush and mild soap or denture paste, over a sink with water or a towel in it. Soak overnight in cool water or a denture soak, then rinse before wearing.
Can I clean dentures with toothpaste?
It’s better not to. Most toothpastes are slightly abrasive and scratch acrylic, which then stains and smells sooner. Use mild soap or a denture cleaner.
Should dentures be removed at night?
Yes, for most people. Giving the gums 6 to 8 hours of rest lowers the risk of thrush and sores. A dentist may advise differently in rare cases.
Why do dentures smell bad?
Usually from germs and food in tiny scratches, or from not soaking overnight. Daily brushing, soaking and cleaning the gums and tongue fix most smell; a smell that persists needs a dental check.
What to do if dentures are loose?
See the dentist for a reline or adjustment. Adhesive can help a slightly loose denture for a while, but needing more and more of it means the fit has changed.
How do I heal a sore from dentures?
Rest the gum by leaving the denture out, rinse with warm salt water and eat soft food. A sore lasting more than 2 weeks, or one that keeps returning, needs a dentist.
Can you soak dentures in hot water?
No. Hot or boiling water can warp acrylic so it no longer fits. Use cool or lukewarm water only.
What foods are hard to eat with dentures?
Tough meat, whole nuts, corn on the cob, whole apples and sticky sweets are the hardest, and hard pieces are also a choking risk. Cut food small and chew with both sides at once.
How long do dentures last?
Commonly around 5 to 8 years before they need replacing, with relines in between. The mouth changes over time, so the dentist judges the fit.
Is denture adhesive safe to use every day?
Yes, used sparingly as the pack says. Clean it off completely each night. Using large amounts to hold a badly fitting denture is a sign it needs a dentist.
What does mouth cancer look like under dentures?
It may start as a white or red patch, a sore that won’t heal, or a lump. Any such change lasting 2 weeks needs checking, especially in paan, gutka or tobacco users.
