Cheap Foods for Weight Gain: Calories Per Rupee, Worked Out
Pack price tells you nothing. What decides the cheapest way to gain weight is the cost of every 100 kcal, and you can work it out in two minutes with a phone calculator and the label.
The formula
- Step 1: read kcal per 100 g on the pack, or per 100 ml for milk.
- Step 2: divide the pack price by the pack weight, then multiply to get the price of 100 g.
- Step 3: divide that price by the kcal in 100 g. Lower is cheaper energy.
- Gate: unexplained weight loss needs a doctor before any budget plan.

Why is a method better than a price list?
Prices in a Karachi bazaar differ from Lahore, Delhi or a village shop, and they change every month. Any list printed today would be wrong by next season. A method keeps working. You plug in the numbers from your own shop this week and the ranking updates itself, so you always buy the cheapest energy you can actually find.
How do you work out calories per rupee?
- Pick a food and note its pack price and weight in grams.
- Find the energy on the label as kcal per 100 g. If the pack shows only kJ, divide by 4.2 to get kcal.
- Work out price per 100 g: price divided by pack grams, times 100.
- Work out price per 100 kcal: price per 100 g divided by kcal per 100 g, times 100.
- Write all foods in one table and rank them from lowest to highest.
Loose items with no label, like rice or atta sold by the kilo, usually show kcal on a similar branded packet, so borrow that figure. Calories per rupee is only one lens; protein per rupee is the second, and the same sums work with grams of protein from the label.

What order will you usually find?
Fat carries about 9 kcal per gram, against about 4 kcal per gram for carbohydrate and protein, according to the NHS. That one fact explains the typical pattern: cooking oil sits near the top for cheap energy, followed by rice, atta and peanuts, with banana and potato respectable because they are cheap even though they hold water. Nuts like almonds usually sit lower on energy per rupee but may still earn a place for other reasons. Your own prices can shuffle this order, so trust your table.
Notice that oil is cheapest energy but gives no protein. A diet built on oil and rice grows fat more than muscle, so protein per rupee matters too. Daal, eggs, milk and peanuts usually do well on that second ranking. For ready combinations see the desi high-calorie food list.
Try this: always compare cost per 100 kcal
When two loose items look similar, check the per-kg price and the label, not the pack price. A big bag is not always the better deal, and a small packet of a rich food can beat a large packet of a watery one. Cost per 100 kcal is the number that decides.
How do you turn the ranking into meals?
Use the cheapest energy as the base and cheap protein as the guard. A day might be roti or rice at every meal, daal or chana, an egg or two, a glass or two of milk, a banana and a handful of peanuts, with a measured spoon of oil or ghee in cooking. Soaked chana and peanuts make a strong plate, laid out in the soaked chana and mungfali plate. Students on a tight allowance will find extra ideas in hostel weight gain on a budget, and building muscle without powders is in muscle gain on a budget. Protein sources compared by cost are in daal, chana and anda on a budget.
Is cheap food unhealthy food?
Not at all. Daal, chana, eggs, milk, rice, atta and bananas are some of the best-value foods anywhere. The trap is not cheap, it is cheap and ultra-processed, like packet snacks and sugary drinks, which are costly per nutrient. Spend the budget on staples.
A tight budget does not change the first rule: if you are losing weight without trying, or cannot gain despite eating, see a doctor, since thyroid problems, diabetes, TB, coeliac disease, infections and depression can be behind it. Never pay for gain powders or syrups from the market as a shortcut, because unlabelled products have been found to hide medicines. People with diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease should ask a doctor or dietitian before raising oil, sugar or protein. Do not start, stop or change medicines because of this article.
