Bleeding Gums (Masoron Se Khoon): Home Remedies That Fix the Cause

Pink in the sink after brushing is not a sign to brush more gently. It’s the opposite. Bleeding gums (masoron se khoon) almost always mean plaque has been left along the gum line, and the fix is better cleaning, not less. The bleeding gums home remedies that work are a two-week brushing plan, the salt rinse that actually helps, and the moment it stops being a home matter.

What bleeding gums are telling you

Gums bleed when they’re inflamed, and they get inflamed when a film of bacteria (plaque) sits at the point where tooth meets gum for more than a day or two, so that the gum swells, goes from pale pink to red, loses its tight knife-edge and starts oozing at the slightest touch. Dentists call this gingivitis. It’s the most common reason for blood on the brush in every age group. It’s fully reversible.

What people do next is the problem. The gum hurts a little and bleeds, so they skip that spot, the plaque there starts hardening into tartar within days, the gum bleeds more, and within months the inflammation reaches the bone holding the tooth, a stage called periodontitis that a dentist can halt but not reverse. Teeth loosen. Years later, over a sore spot that was avoided.

The two-week brushing fix

Do this twice a day for 14 days. Bleeding usually settles well within that time if the cause is plaque. If it doesn’t, the last section is for you.

  1. Get a soft brush. Not medium. A soft or extra-soft head with a small brush face. Hard bristles scratch the gum and make people brush lightly out of pain, which leaves plaque behind. Replace it every 3 months or when the bristles splay.
  2. Pea-sized fluoride toothpaste, a pea, not a stripe along the whole head. The amount matters less than the time.
  3. Angle the bristles at 45 degrees into the gum line, half on the tooth, half on the gum. Make tiny circles or short jiggles, two or three teeth at a time, for about 10 seconds per spot. Don’t scrub side to side. The bristles must go slightly under the edge of the gum, because that’s where the plaque sits.
  4. Brush the bleeding areas first and longest, not last and lightly. It will bleed a little more the first 3 or 4 days. That’s expected. By day 7 it should be noticeably less.
  5. Two full minutes. Count 30 seconds per quarter of the mouth: upper right, upper left, lower left, lower right, outside and inside surfaces both. Most people stop at 45 seconds. A phone timer settles it.
  6. Clean between the teeth once a day, before the evening brush. Floss, an interdental brush or a water flosser. Bleeding between teeth that never bleeds on brushing means only this step is missing.
  7. Spit, don’t rinse with water after brushing, so the fluoride stays on the teeth. Save the salt rinse for a separate time.

The interdental step is the one people skip, and it’s the one that fixes the between-teeth bleeding that brushing alone never reaches. Sizing an interdental brush and doing it without hurting yourself is covered in clean between your teeth daily, so we won’t repeat it here.

Bleeding gums home remedies: the warm salt rinse, its ratio and its limits

A warm salt-water rinse is soothing, mildly antibacterial and cheap, and it helps sore gums feel better while the brushing does the real work. Support, not substitute.

Half a level teaspoon of ordinary salt (about 2.5 g) in 250 ml of warm water, comfortably warm rather than hot, stirred until it dissolves; then take a mouthful, swish it around for 30 seconds with the cheeks working and push it between the teeth, spit, and repeat until the glass is done, once or twice a day after meals for up to 2 weeks. Then stop. Salt water every day for months dries the mouth and can roughen the lining.

Don’t swallow it, and don’t use it as a chaser to brushing since it rinses the fluoride away. If you have high blood pressure and are careful with salt, a spat-out rinse adds almost nothing, but a saltless warm-water rinse works nearly as well for comfort if you’d rather. The same rinse, with a note on adding haldi, is in salt water and haldi gargle, and its use for a painful tooth in toothache home remedies.

In the old books

Unani texts treated bleeding gums as a sign of “bad khoon”, hot excess in the blood, and prescribed cooling astringents: a rub of powdered pomegranate rind, a gargle of babool (kikar) bark water, alum in the rinse, and daily miswak. The hakeem’s instinct to use the twig was right for a reason the books didn’t know. A miswak used properly cleans the gum line mechanically and gets people brushing the very spot they were avoiding. If you use one, the technique is in our miswak guide. Treat the astringent rinses as comfort, not as a cure for plaque.

The vitamin C question

Every second aunt says bleeding gums mean a vitamin C shortage. For once, half right. True vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) does make gums bleed, swell and go purple, along with bruising and tiny dots of bleeding around the hair follicles on the legs, but it’s rare in anyone eating fruit, salad or fresh chutney regularly. It does turn up in people living on chai, biscuits, roti and daal with no fresh produce for months, in the elderly, in students, in people with poor appetite from illness.

So ask an honest question. Have you eaten fruit, a raw tomato, capsicum, lemon, guava or amla this week? If yes, your gums are bleeding from plaque, and a vitamin C tablet will not change that. If no, add some, because a guava a day or a spoon of amla is cheap and you needed it anyway. Bleeding from a real deficiency stops within a couple of weeks of eating properly. Bleeding from plaque doesn’t care what you swallow. Our amla guide covers the fresh, dried and murabba forms if you want the desi option.

Pregnancy gingivitis

From around the second month, pregnancy hormones make the gums react much more strongly to even a little plaque, so gums swell, go shiny red and bleed on brushing, and some women get a small soft lump on the gum between two teeth that bleeds easily (a pregnancy epulis). Morning sickness adds acid. Brushing feels impossible.

What to do is the same plan, gentler in timing: brush with a soft brush after the nausea passes rather than straight on waking, rinse with plain water or the salt rinse after vomiting and wait 30 minutes before brushing so the softened enamel isn’t scrubbed, and clean between the teeth daily. Book a dental cleaning. It’s safe throughout pregnancy and most comfortable in months 4 to 6, and you should tell the dentist you’re pregnant so X-rays are avoided unless needed. The bleeding usually settles after delivery, but the plaque you leave now becomes tartar that stays.

Why smokers’ gums don’t bleed, and why that’s bad news

Nicotine narrows the small blood vessels in the gum. A smoker can have deep gum disease and see no blood at all. If you smoke, don’t take a clean brush as reassurance. Get the gums checked yearly.

Myth: bleeding means the gums are being brushed too hard

Brushing too hard causes a different problem, gums that recede and expose sensitive root surfaces, and notches worn at the neck of the tooth. It rarely causes bleeding. Bleeding is inflammation, and inflammation is plaque. The proof is easy: brush the bleeding area properly for a week and watch the blood stop rather than increase.

When bleeding means a dentist, or a doctor

See a dentist if the bleeding hasn’t clearly improved after 2 weeks of the plan above, if gums bleed on their own without brushing, if there’s pus, a persistent bad taste, loose or shifting teeth, gums pulling away from the teeth, or pain when chewing. See a doctor promptly (not just a dentist) if bleeding gums come with unexplained bruising, nosebleeds, very heavy periods, bleeding that won’t stop after a small cut, fever, extreme tiredness or weight loss, because gums are sometimes the first place a blood or clotting problem shows. Tell the dentist if you take a blood thinner (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, rivaroxaban) or have diabetes, since both make gum disease worse and change how it’s treated; don’t stop or change any medicine on your own. Chlorhexidine mouthwash is useful for short spells if a dentist suggests it but stains teeth with longer use. Children with bleeding gums need the same soft-brush technique with a parent doing the brushing until about age 7, and any child with swollen bleeding gums plus fever or mouth sores should be seen the same day.

What good gums feel like

Pale coral pink. Firm. A thin edge that hugs each tooth. No blood on the brush, no blood on the floss, no metallic taste in the morning. Most people get there in 2 to 3 weeks and then keep it with the same two minutes, twice a day, plus the once-a-day clean between, plus a cleaning at the dentist every 6 to 12 months to remove the tartar that no brush, floss or miswak can. If tea leaves a brown line at the gum edge that brushing won’t shift, that’s tartar picking up stain, not a stain you can rinse off, though the habit in rinse your mouth after tea slows it. Everything else in this household health series is under Desi Remedies, and if you’re pregnant and dealing with bleeding gums alongside a bladder that’s suddenly busy, that second symptom has its own honest checklist in bar bar peshab aana.

Should I stop brushing if my gums bleed?

No. Brush the bleeding spot more thoroughly with a soft brush, angled into the gum line. Bleeding from plaque gets worse when you avoid the area and better within about a week when you clean it properly.

How much salt in water for bleeding gums?

Half a level teaspoon (about 2.5 g) in 250 ml of warm water. Swish 30 seconds per mouthful, spit, once or twice a day for up to 2 weeks.

Will vitamin C tablets stop my gums bleeding?

Only if you were genuinely short of it, which is unusual in anyone eating fruit or salad weekly. For most people the cause is plaque, and no tablet changes that. Eating a guava or some amla is a good idea regardless.

Is it normal for gums to bleed in pregnancy?

Common, from about the second month, because hormones make gums over-react to plaque. It’s still plaque, so the soft-brush and interdental routine applies, and a dental cleaning is safe, ideally in months 4 to 6.

Can I use miswak instead of a toothbrush?

A miswak used properly cleans the gum line well, but most people use it only on the front teeth. Use it in addition to a soft brush and fluoride paste, not instead, and don’t skip the between-teeth cleaning.

Does clove oil help bleeding gums?

It numbs briefly and can burn the gum if used neat. It doesn’t remove plaque. Keep clove oil for a painful tooth on the way to a dentist, diluted as in our toothache post.

How long until bleeding gums heal?

With correct brushing and daily interdental cleaning, most gingivitis stops bleeding within 1 to 3 weeks. If two weeks of real effort changes nothing, tartar under the gum needs a professional cleaning.
