Back Pain From Floor Sitting, Sewing and Kitchen Work: Real Fixes

Two hours cross-legged on the dastarkhwan, an afternoon bent over the sewing machine, an evening of rolling rotis at a counter built for someone shorter, and the back complains by night. This isn’t weakness, and it isn’t age. It’s the same posture held for far too long. The fixes are cheap and small: a cushion here, a stool there, a two-minute break on a timer, and a handful of exercises that undo the day.

Before you start

  • The real cause: one position held for 30 minutes or more, not the position itself
  • Floor sitting: a firm cushion or a low stool under the hips keeps the curve in the lower back
  • Sewing: table and chair height, a footrest, and a 2-minute stand every 25 minutes
  • Kitchen: raise the work to elbow height, stand with one foot on a low step, sit for long jobs
  • Undo the day: 6 minutes of exercise in the evening, given below
  • See a doctor: pain running down a leg, numbness, fever, night pain, or no change after 6 weeks

Why floor sitting, sewing and kitchen work hurt the back

Your lower back is happiest with a slight inward curve. Every one of these tasks flattens or reverses it. Sit cross-legged on a flat floor and the pelvis tips backwards, the lower back rounds, and the discs and ligaments take the load the muscles should share. Bend over a sewing machine and the head drops forward, the upper back rounds, and the neck muscles hold up a five-kilo head at an angle for hours. Chop and roll at a counter below your elbow height and you bend at the waist all evening.

Any of these for ten minutes is harmless. The problem is the clock: past about half an hour the muscles tire, the ligaments stretch, and you stand up stiff. Do it daily and the soreness stops going away. The fix, then, is two-part: change the setup so the position is kinder, and break the spell before the half hour is up.

If the pain is already established, read the 6-week rule for kamar dard alongside this; the setup changes below stop it coming back, and that guide covers the mattress and the timeline, and the Desi Remedies hub holds the rest of the back series.

Floor sitting: keep the floor, change the hips

Nobody needs to give up the floor. What changes is the height of the hips relative to the knees. Hips even a few centimetres above the knees let the pelvis sit upright, and the lower back keeps its curve almost on its own.

  1. Raise the hips 8 to 12 cm: a firm cushion folded double, a rolled blanket, or a flat wooden chowki about 10 cm high. Sit on the front edge so the thighs slope down; soft sofa cushions sink and don’t help.
  2. Stand once every 30 minutes: fetch water, help serve, walk to the gate, and change how the legs are folded every 15 minutes in between. A 60-second stand with a gentle backward lean (hands on the lower back, lean back for 2 seconds, 5 times) resets the spine.
  3. For prayer: a chowki or a low stool is allowed for those who need it, and a small cushion under the hips for the sitting parts often solves it. Get up from the floor via hands and knees, then one foot forward, rather than jerking straight up.

Sewing machine and embroidery: the setup that stops the ache

Home tailors and karhai workers get the same three complaints: a burning patch between the shoulder blades, a stiff neck, and a lower back that seizes on standing. Almost all of it comes from the table being too high or the chair too low.

  1. Chair height: feet flat on the floor or a footrest, knees at roughly 90 degrees, thighs level. A plastic chair with a folded blanket on the seat is fine if it gets you there.
  2. Table height: with the shoulders relaxed and elbows bent at 90 degrees, your hands should rest on the machine bed without the shoulders lifting. If the table’s too high, raise the chair and add a footrest (a brick wrapped in cloth, or a thick book). If it’s too low, put the machine on a stable board 3 to 5 cm thick.
  3. Bring the work up, not the head down: for embroidery, rest the frame on a cushion on your lap so it sits about 30 cm from your eyes. Good light on the work does more for the neck than any stretch.
  4. The 25 and 2 rule: 25 minutes stitching, then 2 minutes standing. Roll the shoulders back 10 times, squeeze the shoulder blades together for 5 seconds 5 times, lean back with hands on the lower back for 2 seconds 5 times, and look at something far away.

Kitchen work: counters, rotis and the standing hours

Most desi kitchen counters are built too low for the person who uses them most, so kneading, chopping and washing up mean bending at the waist for the whole evening. Sit for long jobs like peeling and cleaning rice; standing is not a virtue when the job doesn’t need it.

  1. Elbow height is the target: stand straight, bend the elbows to 90 degrees. The work surface should be just below the hands. For most women that’s 85 to 95 cm. If the counter is lower, put the chopping board or the roti board on an upturned steel tray, a thick board, or a stack of two paraat.
  2. One foot up: keep a 10 to 15 cm step (a brick, a small stool) by the counter and rest one foot on it, swapping every few minutes. It tilts the pelvis and takes the ache out of the lower back within a minute.
  3. Lifting the heavy pot or the gas cylinder: feet apart, bend the knees, hold it close to the body, breathe out as you lift, and turn with your feet, never twist at the waist. A full 15 kg cylinder is a two-person job or a trolley job, whatever your age.

Four minutes in the evening to undo the day

These reverse the forward bend of all three jobs. Do them on the floor or the bed, once a day, and stop anything that sends pain down a leg.

  1. Prone press-up (1 minute): lie on your stomach, hands under the shoulders, gently straighten the arms to lift the chest while the hips stay down. 10 slow repetitions. A mild stretch across the belly and a loosening in the lower back is the aim.
  2. Cat-cow (1 minute): on hands and knees, round the back up like a cat, then let the belly drop and look up. 10 slow cycles. It should feel like oiling a hinge.
  3. Bridge (1 minute): on your back, knees bent, feet flat, lift the hips until the body is a straight line from knees to shoulders, hold 5 seconds, lower. 10 repetitions. The buttocks should work, not the lower back.
  4. Hip flexor stretch (1 minute): kneel on one knee, the other foot forward, tuck the tailbone under and lean gently forward until the front of the kneeling hip stretches. 30 seconds each side. Long floor sitting shortens exactly this muscle.

Heat afterwards (a hot water bottle in a cloth, 15 minutes) is comforting and safe. The daily stretch and oil routine written for desk workers fits sewing work well too, and the two routines can share days.

When a setup fix isn’t enough

Go to a hospital today for numbness around the back passage, genitals or inner thighs, any new trouble passing or holding urine or stool, or weakness in a leg (a foot that drags, a knee that gives way). Call 1122 in Pakistan or 112 in India. See a doctor the same day for back pain with fever, back pain after a fall in someone over 60, back pain with unexplained weight loss, pain that wakes you at night and doesn’t ease when you move, and any back pain in a child. Pain that runs below the knee, or tingling in the leg, needs a doctor’s look this week. Pregnant women should keep heat mild, avoid lying flat on the back for long spells after the middle of pregnancy, and mention any back pain with tightening, bleeding or fever to their doctor at once. If nothing here has helped after 6 weeks of honest effort, a doctor or physiotherapist should assess you rather than you carrying on alone. Any painkiller is chosen with a pharmacist or doctor.

Back pain from daily work: what people ask

Is sitting on the floor bad for your back?

Not by itself. Sitting cross-legged on a flat floor for more than half an hour rounds the lower back and loads the discs, which is what hurts. A firm cushion or a 10 cm chowki under the hips, changing leg position every 15 minutes and standing every 30 minutes lets you keep the floor and lose the ache.

Zameen par baithne se kamar dard kyun hota hai?

Because the pelvis tips back and the natural curve of the lower back flattens, so the ligaments and discs carry the weight instead of the muscles. Raising the hips a few centimetres above the knees with a cushion or stool fixes most of it.

How should I sit at a sewing machine to avoid back pain?

Feet flat or on a footrest, knees at 90 degrees, and the table low enough that your hands rest on the machine without lifting the shoulders. A rolled towel in the small of the back, good light on the work, and a 2-minute stand every 25 minutes.

Why does my back hurt after cooking or standing in the kitchen?

Usually because the counter is below elbow height, so you bend at the waist for the whole evening. Raise the board with a tray or thick board, keep one foot on a low step and swap it every few minutes, and sit for long jobs like peeling and cleaning.

What is the best height for a kitchen counter?

Just below your hands when you stand straight with elbows bent at 90 degrees, which for most women is around 85 to 95 cm. If yours is lower, raise the work surface rather than bending to meet it.

What is the best exercise for back pain from sitting?

Standing back bends through the day (hands on the lower back, lean back for 2 seconds, 5 times, every half hour), and in the evening prone press-ups, cat-cow, bridges and a hip flexor stretch. About 6 minutes total. Stop anything that sends pain down a leg.

Can I pray sitting on a chair or stool if my back hurts?

Yes; a chair or a low stool for those who need it is an accepted allowance. Often only the sitting parts of the prayer hurt, and a small cushion under the hips for those parts is enough to keep praying on the floor.

When should back pain from housework see a doctor?

Pain going below the knee, numbness or tingling in a leg, fever, night pain that doesn’t ease when you move, pain after a fall in someone over 60, or no improvement after 6 weeks of setup changes and exercise. Saddle numbness, bladder or bowel changes and leg weakness are emergencies.
