Babool (Kikar) Benefits: Datun, Gond, Phali and Bark, Honestly

Babool (Kikar) gives you four useful things: a twig to clean teeth, an edible gum for laddu, bitter pods and a tannin-rich bark. The honest list of babool benefits is shorter than the WhatsApp one, so here is what each part really does, how to use it safely and what to ignore.

Quick facts

  • Tree: Vachellia nilotica, still sold as Acacia nilotica, called babool, babul or kikar
  • Best everyday use: the datun (chewing twig) and the gond in winter sweets
  • Weakest claim: phali (pod) powder for knee pain or “strength”
  • Same as miswak? No. Miswak is a different tree (Salvadora persica)
  • Who should be careful: pregnancy, diabetes (laddu sugar), anyone on regular medicines

What is babool, and is kikar the same tree?

Yes. Babool, babul and kikar are the same thorny tree with yellow ball-shaped flowers, growing along roads, canals and dry fields across Punjab, Sindh, Rajasthan and most of the plains, and you’ll know it by the paired white thorns and the curved, bead-like pods that look like a string of flattened buttons.

One trap. The tree many villagers now call “vilayati kikar” is a different plant, mesquite (Prosopis juliflora), brought from the Americas and spread for firewood; its pods are long and smooth, not beaded, remedy sellers rarely mention the difference, and powders sold as “babool phali” can be either.

How do you use a kikar datun for teeth?

This is babool’s strongest everyday use. The fresh twig is fibrous and slightly bitter, the bitterness comes from tannins (plant compounds that tighten tissue and taste astringent), and chewing it scrubs the teeth mechanically, much like a brush does; it is the same idea as the miswak, which we cover in detail in our miswak guide.

  1. Cut a young, green twig about 15 to 20 cm long and roughly as thick as a pencil. Skip old, dry or cracked twigs.
  2. Rinse it under running water and peel back about 1 cm of bark from one end.
  3. Chew that end gently for 1 to 2 minutes until the fibres open into a soft brush.
  4. Brush each tooth surface with short strokes for about 2 minutes, gum line included, without scraping the gums.
  5. Rinse your mouth, then cut off the used 1 cm. Keep the rest in a clean, dry glass and replace the twig after 3 or 4 days.

A datun cleans well. It doesn’t carry fluoride, though, and fluoride is what protects enamel from decay, so the fair approach is to use fluoride toothpaste at least once a day, enjoy the datun as an extra, and clean between the teeth too, because no twig reaches there. That’s it.

What is babool gond, and what is it good for?

Babool gond is the hardened sap that oozes from cuts in the bark and dries into pale yellow to amber tears. It belongs to the gum arabic family, the same type of food gum the food industry lists as E414 in soft drinks, sweets and icing.

  • In the kitchen: the tears are fried in ghee until they puff up like popcorn, then crushed into laddu or panjiri. Our gond ke laddu recipe has the full method.
  • What it is: mostly soluble fibre. Fibre feeds gut bacteria and adds bulk, which is a real but modest benefit at the amounts people eat.
  • Not to confuse: gond katira is a different gum (tragacanth). Katira swells into jelly in water overnight. Babool gond mostly dissolves into a sticky syrup.

The “strength”, “back pain” and “bones” claims come from the laddu, which is rich in ghee, nuts and jaggery, foods that are filling and warming on a cold morning in January when the house has no heater. The gum isn’t why.

What does babool phali powder actually do?

Here the three voices really part ways.

What people say

YouTube channels call babool fali powder a joint “grease” that rebuilds knee cartilage, some sell it as a men’s tonic, and the videos promise you’ll walk without pain in a few weeks.

What tradition says

In Unani and Ayurvedic practice the pods are described as astringent and drying, used in compound powders for loose joints, discharges and weak gums. Tradition uses them as one ingredient in a mix, chosen by a practitioner, not a spoonful for everyone.

Our honest take Skip it for knee pain

No plant powder rebuilds cartilage. There’s no good human evidence that the pods help knee arthritis, and because they are an herb used as medicine, the amount belongs to the pack or a qualified practitioner, never a video. If you try it anyway, give it no more than a few weeks, and stop if you get constipation, stomach pain or a rash. Knee pain that wakes you at night, a hot swollen joint, or a knee that locks or gives way needs a doctor or physiotherapist. Weight loss and leg-strengthening exercises do far more for most knees than any pod.

Is babool bark good for gums?

The bark is the most tannin-heavy part, and a weak boiled water from it has long been used as a gargle for sore or bleeding gums, where the astringent taste does make gums feel tighter for a while. Briefly.

  1. Wash about 10 g of clean, dried bark pieces (roughly two thumb-sized chips).
  2. Simmer them in 400 ml of water for 10 minutes, until the water turns tea-brown.
  3. Cool to lukewarm, strain through a cloth, and use it as a gargle for 30 seconds, then spit it out.
  4. Make it fresh each day. Don’t swallow it.

Depends As a comfort rinse, fine. As a fix, no. Gums that bleed every time you brush usually mean plaque at the gum line, and the answer is better brushing, flossing and a scale and polish. Our bleeding gums guide covers what to check first.

Myth: babool toothpaste is herbal, so it’s better than normal toothpaste

“Babool” on a toothpaste box is mostly a flavour and a story. What protects teeth is fluoride, some herbal pastes have it while others don’t, and so you turn the tube over and look for fluoride listed, around 1,000 to 1,450 ppm for adults. A paste without it may taste traditional and still leave you with more cavities.

Myth: kikar and miswak are the same thing

They’re both chewing sticks, so people mix them up, but miswak (pilu, Salvadora persica) has a peppery, slightly salty taste while kikar is bitter and woodier. Both clean mechanically. Neither replaces fluoride.

A datun is a good brush. It isn’t a toothpaste.

How to buy real babool gond and store it

  • Look: clear, glassy tears from pale yellow to light amber, mostly whole, without bark bits or dust.
  • Smell: almost none. A sour or musty smell means damp storage.
  • Cheap fakes: crushed resin or sugar crystals are sometimes mixed in. Real gond dissolves slowly in water into a sticky, tasteless syrup rather than melting fast and tasting sweet. That rough check proves only that it is a gum, not which tree it came from.
  • Storage: airtight jar, cool dark shelf, up to a year. Keep it dry or it clumps.
What elders did

In many Punjabi villages the morning datun was cut fresh from the nearest kikar, the gond was collected from the trunk for winter laddu given after childbirth and to elderly relatives, and the bark went into leather tanning and dye, which is a clue to how strong those tannins are.

Take care if

You’re pregnant or breastfeeding: food gond in laddu is fine, but skip phali or bark powders as medicine. You have diabetes: the laddu, not the gum, carries the sugar and ghee, so keep portions small and count it as a sweet. You take medicines daily: tannin-rich powders can reduce how well some medicines and iron are absorbed, so ask your pharmacist about spacing. Children can chew a datun with an adult watching, but they still need a pea-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste. See a dentist for a loose tooth, a gum swelling with pus, or a mouth sore that hasn’t settled in 3 weeks.

Babool ke fayde: your questions answered

What are the main babool benefits?

The datun cleans teeth mechanically and the gond is an edible fibre-rich gum for laddu and panjiri. The bark makes an astringent gargle that soothes gums for a while. Claims about knee repair, sexual strength or long life aren’t backed by good evidence.

Is babool and kikar the same?

Yes, babool, babul and kikar are names for the same tree, Vachellia nilotica. Don’t confuse it with vilayati kikar, which is mesquite, a different and invasive tree with long smooth pods.

What are babool gond benefits for females?

Mostly what any fibre-rich winter sweet gives: energy and fullness when it’s eaten in gond laddu after childbirth or in cold months. The calories come from the ghee, nuts and sugar. There’s no proof it strengthens the back or womb.

How to use babool gond?

Fry the tears in hot ghee on medium heat until they puff and turn white, about 30 seconds per small batch. Crush them and fold into laddu, panjiri or halwa. Don’t eat raw tears in a hurry: they are hard and can stick in the throat.

Is babool and miswak same?

No. Miswak comes from the pilu tree (Salvadora persica), while babool is an acacia. Both are chewed into a brush. Miswak tastes peppery; kikar tastes bitter and woody.

How to use babool powder for knee pain?

We don’t recommend relying on it, because there’s no good evidence it helps knees. If you choose to try it, follow the pack or a qualified practitioner for the amount, judge it within a few weeks, and see a doctor for swelling, heat or locking.

What are babool phali side effects?

The pods are very astringent, so constipation, a dry mouth and stomach upset are the common complaints. Tannins may also reduce iron absorption. Stop if you get a rash, stomach pain or dark stools, and ask a doctor.

Is babool gond good for health?

In normal food amounts, yes, it’s a safe food gum with soluble fibre. Problems come from eating a lot of gond laddu, which is heavy in calories. Drink water with it, because large amounts of gum can cause bloating.

Can kids use babool datun?

Children over about 6 who can chew without swallowing pieces can use one with an adult watching. Keep using fluoride toothpaste, a pea-sized amount from 3 years. Never give a thorny twig, and remove the thorns first.

Can I use babool in pregnancy?

Gond in a normal laddu portion is food and generally fine. Bark, pod and leaf powders as medicine should be skipped in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your own doctor agrees.

Is babool toothpaste good?

It’s good if it contains fluoride, so check the ingredients panel. The babool part adds taste and tradition. Brush for 2 minutes and spit, don’t rinse, so the fluoride stays on the teeth.

What are babool ki chhal ke fayde?

The bark (chhal) is rich in tannins, so a boiled bark water works as a tightening gargle for sore gums and a sore throat. It’s a comfort measure only. Bleeding gums still need cleaning at the gum line and a dental check.
