Ambergris Overview

We’ll explore what ambergris is, how it forms, why collectors pay huge sums, and the crucial legal snag you need to know before you ever consider buying one.

What is ambergris?

Sperm whales swallow squid, and the indigestible beaks get wrapped in a fatty wax inside the intestine. The lump later exits the whale, floats, and over years of sun and sea turns from a dark, dung-smelling mass into a pale, sweet, earthy treasure.

Top price per kg

The market can reach forty thousand dollars per kilogram for the finest pale grade, making ambergris one of the most expensive natural substances on Earth.

Traditional uses

In Unani medicine ambergris, called anbar, is considered hot and dry, used to strengthen the heart and brain, and appears in compounds like khamira ambari. Arab and Persian perfumers have long prized it to fix scents and even flavor coffee.

Why it’s expensive

Only sperm whales produce ambergris, and just a tiny fraction of them generate the coveted lumps. It can’t be farmed, nature drops it on beaches or inside dead whales. The most valuable grades need years of sea aging, while fresh black pieces fetch far less.

Thai find value

In October 2021 a Thai fisherman’s find of about thirty kilograms was reported to be worth up to one point two million dollars, roughly forty thousand dollars per kilogram.

Legal and buying tips

Because the sperm whale is CITES Appendix I protected, many nations ban ambergris. In India it’s a criminal offense to buy, sell, or keep it. Elsewhere check wildlife rules, and for perfume pick products labeled ‘ambrox’ or ‘synthetic amber’ to stay legal.

The one rule to stay safe

The one rule to stay safe: if you live in India, never own or trade ambergris, because possession can lead to prosecution and hefty fines.
