Water Fasting vs Juice Fasting: What Happens in 24 to 72 Hours

Three kilos gone by day two. That number is real, and it is also almost entirely water and stored sugar, not fat. This Routine Autopsy walks through water fasting and juice fasting hour by hour, so you know exactly what a 24 to 72 hour “reset” is actually doing to your body.

The short version

  • Water fasting: nothing but water, 24 to 72 hours
  • Juice fasting: only fruit or vegetable juice, same time window, still a very low calorie intake
  • Steps worth keeping: 1 of 4 hourly stages, more useful as an occasional, planned short reset
  • Good for: a mental break from constant snacking, a short digestive rest
  • Cannot do: “detox” your liver, burn meaningful fat in 3 days, or replace a medically supervised fast if you take regular medication

Hour 0 to 12: still running on breakfast

For the first several hours your body is simply finishing digestion and drawing on the glucose already in your bloodstream. You will not feel much different from a normal gap between meals. This part is not doing anything special, water fasting or not.

Hour 12 to 24: the glycogen phase, and where most of the scale drop comes from

Your liver starts breaking down glycogen, its stored form of glucose, to keep blood sugar steady. Every gram of glycogen is stored with roughly 3 grams of water attached to it, which is the actual mechanism behind the dramatic early weight loss people report. Losing 500 grams of glycogen can show up as nearly 2 kilos off the scale. It comes back within a day or two of eating normally. Verdict: real number, wrong interpretation if you call it fat loss.

Where juice fasting differs here

A juice fast still supplies sugar, just in liquid form without fibre, so blood sugar swings can be sharper than plain water, with a spike after each glass and a dip afterward. People sensitive to sugar crashes often feel shakier on juice fasting than on water fasting for this reason, even though juice “feels” gentler.

Hour 24 to 48: ketosis begins, hunger often eases

Once glycogen stores run low, the body shifts toward burning fat for fuel and producing ketones. This is the stage people describe as hunger suddenly disappearing, and it is genuine, not willpower. It is also when the first real health risks appear for anyone with an existing condition, because ketosis changes electrolyte handling in the kidneys.

Take care if

Anyone with diabetes should not attempt water or juice fasting without direct medical supervision, since blood sugar medication doses need adjusting and hypoglycaemia risk rises sharply. The same applies to anyone on blood pressure medication, diuretics, or lithium. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not fast beyond a normal meal gap. Stop immediately and get medical help for dizziness severe enough to affect standing, a racing or irregular heartbeat, confusion, or fainting.

Hour 48 to 72: electrolyte load becomes the real issue

Sodium, potassium and magnesium are not stored the way fat and glycogen are, and a fast this long without any food source of them can bring on muscle cramps, headache and genuine fatigue that has nothing to do with willpower. This is the point where a juice fast has a small practical edge, since most juices carry some potassium, while plain water carries none.

  1. If attempting a 24 hour fast, drink at least 2 to 2.5 litres of plain water through the day.
  2. Add a pinch of salt to one glass of water if you feel light headed, roughly a quarter teaspoon dissolved well.
  3. Do not pair a fast with intense exercise, heat exposure, or a sauna session on the same day.
  4. Break the fast with something light: a banana, dal shorba, or khichri, not a heavy fried meal.
  5. If extending past 24 hours, stop the attempt if you feel a racing heartbeat, severe headache, or confusion.

Where this fits with desi fasting habits people already know

This is not the same as the Ramadan pattern or a 16:8 style eating window, which allow food and water within a daily cycle and are far gentler on electrolytes. Our guide to intermittent fasting desi style covers those patterns in more detail, and they are a more sustainable route to the “reset” feeling most people are actually chasing. If plain water during a fast feels insufficient, our coconut water guide explains its electrolyte content and its kidney caution, which matters if you already have kidney concerns.

The traditional view

Ritucharya, Ayurveda’s seasonal routine, does describe periodic light eating and occasional fasting as part of digestive rest, langhana, but it is framed as brief and adjusted to the person’s constitution, not a fixed 72 hour endurance test. Unani medicine similarly treats prolonged abstinence from food as something to individualise by temperament, not a blanket prescription.

Who genuinely should not attempt either fast

Beyond the medication caution already covered, a few groups should give this a hard pass entirely rather than a modified version. Anyone with a current or past eating disorder should avoid structured fasting protocols, since they can trigger patterns that are far harder to unwind than any short term goal is worth. Teenagers, whose bodies are still growing, should not undertake multi day fasts outside a medical reason with supervision. Anyone recovering from surgery, a recent illness, or significant weight loss already should let their body stabilise before adding a fasting stress on top. None of these are edge cases dreamed up for caution’s sake, they cover a meaningful share of people who see fasting content online and consider trying it without thinking through whether they belong in that audience at all.

Signs you should stop a fast early, every time

Some discomfort, mild headache and irritability in the first 24 hours, is a normal part of the glycogen and adjustment phase and does not need to end the attempt. A different category of signal means stop regardless of how far into the fast you are: a heart rate that feels irregular or is racing well above your resting normal, fainting or near fainting on standing, confusion or difficulty concentrating beyond ordinary tiredness, or vomiting. These are not signs of “pushing through a plateau”, they are signs the body’s electrolyte or blood sugar regulation is genuinely struggling.

The honest verdict

A single 24 hour water fast, done with adequate hydration and no underlying condition, is unlikely to cause harm and can genuinely reset an urge to snack constantly. Stretching that to 72 hours multiplies the electrolyte risk for a fat loss result that is still modest. Juice fasting softens hunger slightly but adds sugar swings. Neither is a shortcut past ordinary calorie management over weeks.

Treat any fast longer than a day as an occasional experiment rather than a routine, plan it around a day with no demanding work or exercise, and judge success by how you feel afterward rather than by the number on the scale the next morning, since that number is telling you far less than it appears to.

Is water fasting better than juice fasting for weight loss?

Neither produces meaningful fat loss in 24 to 72 hours. Water fasting causes sharper hunger but steadier blood sugar, juice fasting eases hunger slightly but causes more sugar swings.

Can I take my regular medicines while fasting?

Only with your doctor’s guidance. Many medicines, especially for diabetes and blood pressure, need dose adjustment or should not be taken on an empty stomach at all.

Is it safe to exercise during a water fast?

Light walking is usually fine. Avoid intense workouts, heavy gym sessions, or anything in strong heat during a fast.

How long until glycogen weight comes back after fasting?

Usually within 24 to 48 hours of eating normally again, since the body simply restores its glycogen and water stores.
