Ever wonder why your palms turn orange after eating carrots, pumpkin or mango? This video explains that the tint is a harmless build-up of carotene, called carotenemia, and shows you how to tell it apart from something more serious. We also share a quick daylight-photo test to track the colour change and highlight the warning signs, yellow eyes, dark urine or pale stools, that mean you should see a doctor. This is general information, not medical advice.

Carrot Skin Color Explained

In this video you'll learn why orange palms are harmless and how to spot the real warning sign.

Why palms turn orange

Beta-carotene from carrots, pumpkin and mango can accumulate in the skin when you eat a lot over weeks. The palms are first to show the orange hue, a condition called carotenemia, which is harmless.

Carotene vs jaundice

The key difference is colour and location. Carotene gives an orange tint that starts on the palms and may spread to arms. Jaundice makes the skin and the whites of the eyes turn yellow, and that signals a possible liver issue requiring a doctor.

How much orange food?

There’s no exact carrot count that triggers the colour change. It’s the overall balance of your diet. If orange vegetables dominate for weeks, the tint appears. Mixing in greens, peppers, beans and other fruits helps the colour fade.

Vitamin A safety

Beta-carotene is a provitamin, so your body only makes as much vitamin A as it needs. This natural regulation prevents toxic build-up. In contrast, pre-formed vitamin A from animal sources can accumulate and become harmful if taken in excess.

Daylight Photo Test

A quick way to track the change is to photograph your palms and the whites of your eyes in natural daylight. Then, after cutting back on orange foods for a week, take new photos and compare. The visual difference is clearer than memory.

Key Quote

Remember, orange palms from carrots are just a colour change, while yellow eyes are a reason to see a doctor.

The one sign to watch

If you notice any yellowing of the eye whites or skin, that’s the red flag that needs a doctor’s attention right away, not a diet tweak.
