Three savory oat chillas in 15 minutes, can breakfast be this quick?

Quick Oat Chilla Intro

If you’re not a fan of sweet porridge, these savory oat dishes are a perfect alternative. With just half a cup of oat flour, a couple of spoons of besan and a dollop of dahi, you can whip up three soft chillas in about fifteen minutes. The post also shares four more recipes, roti, upma, khichdi and tikki, each with calorie counts and optional protein boosters.

At a Glance

A quick rundown: stick to plain rolled or quick oats, never the flavored sachets. Pulse the flakes for half a minute to a minute to get a coarse flour. When making roti, blend the oat flour with wheat atta to keep it from cracking. And for extra protein, add dahi, egg, paneer or moong dal.

Homemade Oat Flour

To make oat flour at home, place plain rolled oats in a dry grinder jar and pulse for thirty to sixty seconds until the texture resembles coarse atta. A cup of rolled oats, roughly ninety grams, will give you just under a cup of flour because the flakes settle after grinding. Grind only a week or two’s worth at a time and keep the flour in an airtight jar; if it smells bitter or like old paint, discard it.

Oats Chilla Steps

For the classic oat chilla, combine half a cup of oat flour, two tablespoons of besan and a third of a cup of dahi. Add water a spoon at a time until the batter reaches a thick, pourable consistency, similar to pakora batter. Fold in finely chopped onion, tomato, a green chilli, a pinch of coriander, turmeric and cumin. Let the mixture rest for ten minutes so the oats absorb water and the chilla holds together better.

Sticking Fix

If the chilla sticks, the pan is either too cold or too dry. Heat the tawa until a sprinkle of water sizzles away, then wipe a thin layer of oil using a cut half-onion. Pour the batter and wait until the top edges look dry before flipping. This prevents tearing and gives a nice golden crust.

Oats Roti Tips

Pure oat roti tends to crack because oats lack gluten. The fix is simple: blend one cup of wheat atta with half a cup of oat flour and a pinch of salt. Knead with warm water, adding it slowly until the dough feels a bit softer than regular roti dough. Let it rest for fifteen to twenty minutes; the oat flour will keep soaking, so add a few drops of water if it stiffens. Divide into six balls, roll with extra dry atta, and cook on a hot tawa just like a normal roti.

Savory Oats Dishes

For oats upma, start by dry-roasting a cup of rolled oats for three to four minutes until they turn toasty. Heat a couple of teaspoons of oil, add mustard seeds, chana dal, curry leaves and a green chilli, then toss in a chopped onion. Add mixed vegetables, carrot, peas, beans, capsicum, and sauté for a few minutes with salt. Pour in three-quarters of a cup of water, bring to a boil, stir in the roasted oats, cover and cook on low for two to three minutes. The result is a fluffy, savory bowl that pairs nicely with a side of dahi or a sprinkle of roasted peanuts.

Oats & Weight Loss

Oats can be a helpful breakfast choice because the soluble fibre, beta-glucan, thickens in the stomach and helps you feel full until lunch. That said, they aren’t a miracle food that melts fat on its own. A chilla fried in two teaspoons of oil isn’t low-calorie, and real weight loss comes from the total calories you consume throughout the day. Sustainable loss typically averages half to one kilogram per week after the first couple of weeks, when the initial drop is mostly water weight.

Safety First

A quick safety note: if you’re on insulin or sugar-lowering medication, cutting breakfast portions could trigger low blood sugar, so check with your doctor first. Those with kidney disease should be cautious about high-potassium meals like dal-heavy oats. People with celiac disease need gluten-free oats and should avoid the wheat-atta versions. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals are advised to focus on balanced nutrition rather than calorie restriction. If you experience chest pain, fainting or unexplained weight loss, seek medical attention.
