Night Sweats: Spot the Real Issue
We'll show you how to tell if night sweats are just heat or a sign to see a doctor, and reveal the one habit that can help tonight.
Room or Body? First Question
If everyone in the house is damp from a hot night, it's likely the room, not your body. The key is to ask: did anyone else sweat? If the room was cool and only you were soaked, look deeper.
One-Week Diary
Keep a simple diary for a week. Each morning write if you were damp, needed to change clothes, or soaked the sheet. Note the fan, AC, blankets, and any power cuts. Also jot down what you ate or drank after eight at night.
Common Everyday Triggers
Most night sweats come from heat trapped against the skin, thick razai, polyester sheets, tight nightclothes. Late heavy or spicy meals, hot chai, and alcohol raise body temperature. Stress, hormonal changes, and low nighttime sugar can also play a role.
Cough duration
If you have a cough that lasts more than three weeks together with night sweats, it's a red flag for TB and you should get a free test at a government centre.
High fever
A fever of 39 degrees Celsius or higher, especially when it spikes at night, means you need to see a doctor right away.
Cooler night, step by step
Switch to a cotton sheet and loose cotton nightclothes. Keep the fan running or a window open, and replace a heavy razai with a thin cotton blanket unless the room is cold. Finish dinner and chai at least two hours before bedtime.
The one habit to try
The single most useful habit is to have a spare cotton kurta or shirt within arm's reach. If you wake soaked, you can change quickly without a full night-time disruption.
