Smoothie Combinations: Which Fruits Blend Well and Which to Skip
Most of the best fruit smoothie combinations follow one formula: a glass of liquid, one or two fruits, a protein and a little fat. Banana with milk and almonds, mango with dahi, chikoo with milk and a pinch of elaichi. A few pairs go wrong in the glass (citrus curdles milk, raw pineapple and kiwi turn dairy bitter) and a few go wrong in the body (daily raw spinach, green papaya in pregnancy, four fruits at once). Here’s how to build one that works and what to leave out.
The smoothie formula: base, fruit, protein, fat
Think of a smoothie as a meal poured into a glass. Only fruit? Sweet drink. Add protein and a little fat and it becomes something that actually holds you for a few hours.
| Part | How much | Good choices |
|---|---|---|
| Base | 200 to 250 ml | Milk, dahi thinned with water, chaas, water |
| Fruit | 1 cup (about 150 g), 2 fruits at most | Banana, mango, chikoo, apple, berries, ripe papaya |
| Protein | one item | Dahi, milk base, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp sattu |
| Fat and texture | a little | 5 almonds, 1 tsp soaked seeds, 2 tbsp oats |
Flavour is free: dalchini, elaichi, a few mint leaves, a thin slice of ginger, a pinch of roasted zeera in a salty chaas version. Sugar and honey aren’t needed if the fruit is ripe.
In brief
- Blends well: banana, mango, chikoo, apple, ripe papaya, berries, dates
- Curdles with milk: orange, kinnow, musammi, lemon, pomegranate in large amounts
- Turns dairy bitter: raw pineapple and kiwi, if the smoothie stands
- Keep for: best within 30 minutes; up to 24 hours covered in the fridge

Best fruit smoothie combinations that work
These are pairings with a reason, not just taste.
- Banana, milk, almonds: ripe banana makes it thick without ice cream, and milk and almonds add protein and fat. The classic banana smoothie with milk.
- Mango and dahi: dahi’s tang balances very sweet mango, and it brings protein. Essentially a thick mango lassi.
- Chikoo, milk, elaichi: chikoo is already malty and sweet, so no sugar at all.
- Apple, dahi, dalchini, oats: a breakfast smoothie with fibre and body. Leave the apple peel on.
- Strawberry or jamun with banana and dahi: the banana softens the tartness.
- Ripe papaya, dahi, a few mint leaves: light and mild. Drink it straight away (see below).

A basic banana smoothie with milk
- Pour 250 ml cold full-cream milk into the blender jar (about 150 to 170 kcal).
- Add 1 ripe banana, broken into pieces (about 100 kcal).
- Add 5 almonds, soaked overnight and peeled if your blender is weak (about 35 kcal).
- Add a pinch of dalchini or 2 crushed elaichi seeds.
- Blend 40 to 60 seconds until smooth. Total: roughly 285 to 305 kcal. Drink within 30 minutes.
Bananas count as berries to a botanist. Strawberries don’t.
Smoothie combinations to skip, and why
Citrus with milk: curdles
Orange, kinnow, musammi and lemon are acidic. Acid makes milk protein clump, so a kinnow-milk shake turns grainy and splits in the glass. It isn’t dangerous (that’s how paneer is made), just unpleasant, and no amount of extra blending brings it back together once it has split, so blend citrus with water, coconut water or a little dahi instead, or eat the orange whole beside a plain milk smoothie. For the wider “milk and khatti” question, see our milk combinations explainer.
Raw pineapple or kiwi with dairy: turns bitter
These fruits carry enzymes that break down protein. Pineapple’s is bromelain, the reason it softens meat in a marinade and makes your tongue tingle. In a milk or dahi smoothie that stands for 10 to 20 minutes, the enzyme chops up milk protein and the drink turns bitter and thin. Drink it within a couple of minutes, use a water or coconut-water base, or use cooked or tinned pineapple, where heat has switched the enzyme off.
Raw green papaya: leave it out
Ripe papaya? Lovely. Raw green papaya? No. Its milky latex can irritate the mouth and gut, and pregnant women are traditionally and sensibly told to avoid unripe papaya. Ripe papaya with dairy has a milder version of the pineapple problem, so drink it fresh.
Raw spinach every day
A handful of spinach now and then is fine. A big fistful of raw palak in a smoothie every morning adds up to a lot of oxalate, which can raise the risk of kidney stones in people prone to them. Rotate greens (a little mint, cucumber, a few lettuce leaves), and eat most of your spinach cooked. If you’ve had a stone before, read our kidney stone diet guide and ask your doctor about greens.
Four fruits in one glass
Banana, mango, chikoo and dates together taste wonderful and add up fast. One banana (about 100 kcal), a cup of mango (about 100), 3 dates (about 65) and 250 ml milk (about 150 to 170) is roughly 415 to 435 kcal, and that’s before a spoon of honey. Two fruits is plenty. Honestly.
Myth: fruit with milk is always a bad combination
Ayurvedic tradition lists fruit with milk as viruddha ahar (an incompatible pairing), especially sour fruit, and many desi homes follow it. As tradition it’s worth knowing; if a banana milkshake always leaves you heavy and gassy, your body agrees with it. But there’s no evidence that sweet fruit with milk forms anything harmful in healthy people. Sour fruit curdles milk in the glass, which is a texture issue. The combination to watch is simply the calorie and sugar load.
Myth: a green smoothie cleans your liver
Your liver and kidneys handle cleaning all by themselves, around the clock, whatever you drink, and a green smoothie is simply one more way to get some vegetables in on a busy morning. That’s worth something. It isn’t a flush.
Can I drink smoothies instead of eating?
A smoothie can stand in for breakfast now and then if it has protein and fat, not only fruit. But drinking a meal fills you less than chewing the same food, and you’re often hungry again sooner. Replacing two meals a day with smoothies for weeks, or following a “smoothie diet” for fast weight loss, usually ends with too little protein, low energy and regained weight. For how a smoothie compares with whole fruit and juice for sugar and fibre, see fruit vs juice vs smoothie.
Do smoothies cause constipation? Usually not; blending keeps the fibre. A few people find unripe bananas firm them up, and a smoothie that replaces a meal of daal and sabzi can lower your day’s fibre overall. Drink water through the day too.
You have diabetes: keep to one fruit portion, add dahi or peanut butter, skip honey and sugar, and check your own sugar after a new smoothie. If you take warfarin, keep your leafy greens steady from week to week rather than starting a daily green smoothie suddenly, and tell your doctor. Kidney disease means asking before banana, mango, dates or greens every day, because of potassium. Pregnant women should avoid raw green papaya. For babies, never add honey under 1 year, and don’t add sugar either; under 1, blend fruit into dahi, breast milk or formula rather than giving cow’s milk as a drink. Children under 5 shouldn’t get whole nuts, so blend them completely smooth or leave them out. Stop at once and get help for swelling of the lips, face or throat after a new fruit.
Questions about smoothie combinations
What are the best fruit smoothie combinations?
Banana with milk and almonds, mango with dahi, chikoo with milk and elaichi, apple with dahi and dalchini, and strawberry with banana. Each pairs a fruit with a protein base.
What fruits should not be mixed in a smoothie with milk?
Citrus (orange, kinnow, lemon) curdles milk, and raw pineapple or kiwi turns milk and dahi bitter if it stands. Use a water or coconut-water base for those.
Is a banana smoothie with milk healthy?
Yes, as a snack or breakfast. One banana, 250 ml milk and 5 almonds is roughly 285 to 305 kcal with a fair amount of protein. Leave out sugar and honey.
What is a good smoothie combination for breakfast?
Apple or banana with dahi, 2 tbsp oats and a pinch of dalchini. It has fibre, protein and enough body to last till lunch.
Can we eat fruits with milk?
Sweet fruits like banana, mango and chikoo blend fine with milk for most people. Sour fruits curdle it; tradition discourages the mix, so skip it if it upsets your stomach.
Can I drink a smoothie every day?
Yes, if it’s one glass with one or two fruits and a protein. Vary your greens instead of using raw spinach daily.
Do smoothies cause constipation?
Usually not, since blending keeps the fibre. Unripe bananas or replacing fibre-rich meals with smoothies can make some people constipated; drink water and keep eating daal and sabzi.
Are smoothies good for weight loss?
Only if they replace something heavier and include protein. A fruit-only smoothie with honey can carry as many calories as a meal and leave you hungry sooner.
Can I put raw spinach in my smoothie?
Occasionally, yes. Daily large amounts add a lot of oxalate, which matters for people prone to kidney stones, so rotate greens.
Why does my pineapple smoothie taste bitter?
Pineapple’s enzyme breaks down milk protein, and the broken pieces taste bitter. Drink it straight away or use a water base or cooked pineapple.
What are good smoothie combinations for kids?
Banana and dahi, mango and milk, or chikoo and milk, with no added sugar. Whole fruit is still better most days, and no honey for babies under 1 year.
How long does a homemade smoothie last?
It tastes best within 30 minutes. Covered in the fridge it keeps up to 24 hours, though it separates and darkens; shake before drinking.
Is it better to eat fruit or drink a smoothie?
Whole fruit is more filling and slower to eat. A smoothie is a fine way to add protein and fruit together, but it’s easier to overdo.
