Shaadi Buffet Weight Gain: Plate Order for Thin Guests
At a shaadi buffet, a thin guest should start with the dense dishes, because salad and soup fill the plate with little energy. Build the first trip around dal with ghee or a meat dish, add rice, pulao or naan, and save one dessert for later.
Plate order at a glance
- First trip: a dense main such as dal with ghee or a meat dish, with rice, pulao or naan.
- Second trip: a second main you enjoy, with raita or salad only as a small side.
- Dessert: one, chosen on purpose and eaten sitting down.
- Drink: doodh with the meal, in place of cola or sharbat.
- Before you leave home: a small snack, since function meals often run late.

Why does the first plate matter most?
A buffet gives you only a few trips, and a long function gives you time to fill up on whatever you pick early. Salad leaves and clear soup take up room with little energy, so they crowd out the food a thin guest needs. The first plate is the one you control best, so it should carry the energy. Treat it the way you would treat a proper sit-down meal at home.
How much energy is in ghee and oil on a plate?
Fat carries more energy per gram than anything else on the plate. The NHS puts fat at 9 kcal per gram, against 4 kcal for carbohydrate and protein, and it lists butter, ghee and lard among the foods high in saturated fat. Ghee is milk fat, so the per-gram figure shows why one spoon on the dal or the naan carries far more energy than a bowl of salad. The NHS does not give a weight for a teaspoon of ghee, so judge spoon sizes by eye rather than by a label.
Which dishes add energy, and which only fill space?
| Dish | Why it adds energy | Easy target |
|---|---|---|
| Dal with a spoon of ghee | Protein and carbohydrate, plus the ghee | One katori, with a spoon on top |
| Meat or korma | Protein and fat from the meat and gravy | One good piece and a spoon of gravy |
| Rice or pulao | Carbohydrate, at 4 kcal per gram | About a third of the plate |
| Naan or paratha | Flour, often with ghee or oil | One piece, eaten with the main |
| Salad and raita | Salad is mostly water, and raita is yoghurt, so neither is dense | A small side, after the main |
Use the table to decide where your plate space goes. It is a guide to choices, not a calorie count.
The first-trip test
Look at your first plate before you sit down. Does it hold a dense main with rice, pulao or bread? Then you are set. Salad only means go back and start again.
What is the plate order, step by step?
- At home, have a small snack before you leave, such as a glass of doodh and a handful of dry fruit, so the first trip is not tiny.
- First trip: one dense main, such as dal with a spoon of ghee or a meat dish, with rice, pulao or one piece of naan.
- Second trip: a second main you enjoy. Add raita or salad only as a side, not as the centre of the plate.
- Dessert: one, chosen on purpose, such as kheer or a small halwa, eaten sitting down rather than picked up as you walk.
- Drink: doodh with the meal, not cola or sharbat, for the reasons in the next section.
- Afterwards: keep the next meal at home on time, since long functions can push dinner very late.
Why milk over cola or sharbat?
Cola is the sugar trap at a function. The NHS says a can of cola can have as much as 9 sugar cubes, more than the adult daily limit, and it sets that limit at 30 grams of free sugar a day, roughly 7 cubes. Sharbat carries sugar too, so it adds to the total without adding much to the meal. Doodh brings protein and calcium, so it adds to the meal rather than only sweetening it.
Should a thin guest eat dessert, and what if the function runs late?
For most healthy guests, one dessert is fine, as long as it is chosen on purpose. Pick kheer or a small halwa made with milk and ghee over a stack of sugar-soaked sweets, and eat it sitting down. If the function runs very late and you cannot eat much, eat small amounts more often rather than one large plate. Sweet portions have their own guide in Mithai and Sugar Cravings: Eid and Shaadi Portions Without Guilt. If you have a medical reason for low weight, read weight gain with diabetes or underweight, done safely first.
Who should change this plan?
Diabetes and high blood pressure change the plan. If you have either, ask your doctor which dishes, portions and sweets suit you, and skip the sugar-heavy sweets and sugary drinks. This plan contains no appetite tablets or powders, and any change to a medicine is a doctor’s decision, not a buffet decision.
Bottom line
This is the gain side of the same function day, so do not mix it with a loss plan. If you are planning the loss side, read Shaadi Season Eating: Buffet Tips Without Undoing Weight Loss separately. For the weeks before a wedding, the 8-week prep plan covers the longer run. On the day itself, fill the first plate with energy, not with space.
If weight loss is new or unexplained, see a doctor before any eating plan, because thyroid problems, diabetes, infections and other causes need checking. Diabetes and high blood pressure need a doctor’s advice on portions and sweets. Skip unlabelled weight gain powders and syrups, since a label you cannot check is a risk on its own.
Questions about shaadi buffets for thin guests
What to eat at a wedding buffet if you are thin?
Start with the dense dishes, such as dal with ghee, a meat or korma, and rice, pulao or naan. Keep salad and raita as small sides, and finish with one dessert chosen on purpose.
How to eat more at a shaadi without feeling full?
Take the energy-dense food first, eat slowly, and have a small snack at home so the first trip is not tiny. Milk adds protein and calcium, while cola adds sugar and fizz, so choose the milk.
Best food to eat at a wedding for weight gain?
Choose dal or meat with ghee, rice, pulao or naan, and milk-based sweets in small portions. Fat carries 9 kcal per gram according to the NHS, so a spoon of ghee carries far more energy than the same weight of salad leaves.
Shaadi mein kya khayen wazan badhane ke liye?
Pehle dal ya gosht, ghee ke saath, phir chawal, pulao ya naan lein. Salad aur raita ko side mein rakhein, aur ek mithai soch samajh kar chunein.
Biryani or korma for weight gain at a wedding?
Both are energy-dense because they carry rice or bread with oil, ghee and meat. Choose a sensible serving of one, then take a second only if you are still hungry.
How to eat enough at a long wedding function?
Eat a small snack at home, use the first trip for the mains, and plan the second trip before the dessert line. Eat sitting down, and keep the next meal on time afterwards, because long functions often run late.
Shaadi mein bhook kam lagti hai, kya karein?
Chhoti portions ke saath zyada baar khayen, aur ghar par ek halka snack pehle le lein. Agar bhook kai hafton se kam hai ya wazan bina wajah gir raha hai, to pehle doctor se milein.
Healthy wedding dessert for weight gain?
For a healthy adult, kheer or a small halwa made with milk and ghee, eaten sitting down, is a sensible choice. Keep the portion small and skip stacked, sugar-soaked sweets, especially if you have diabetes or high blood pressure.
