The matka: simple physics, not magic

Copper: a real trace mineral, with a real ceiling

This is the basis for the popular claim that copper water is beneficial, and there is some truth to copper being a genuinely needed nutrient. The issue is that most people already get enough copper through a normal diet of grains, legumes, nuts and vegetables, and copper toxicity, while rare from bottled water alone, is a real and well-documented condition that causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and, with chronic high exposure, liver damage.

The World Health Organization sets a provisional guideline of around 2 mg of copper per litre of drinking water as an upper limit for safety. A copper vessel left with acidic liquid, like a lemon drink, or one that is poorly tinned or badly maintained, can push leaching well past casual, comfortable levels, especially with repeated daily use over years.

Myth: copper water “detoxifies” the body or kills all bacteria in tap water

Copper does have some antimicrobial properties, historically part of why copper vessels were traditionally used for water storage before modern filtration existed. It is not a substitute for actually safe, properly treated or boiled water today, and it does not reliably kill the range of bacteria and parasites that can be present in unsafe tap or well water in many parts of Pakistan and India.
