Cough After Monsoon Not Going: Allergy, Infection or Mould?

A cough that hangs on after the monsoon is very often the tail of a cold, an allergy to damp and mould, or an asthma flare, and a two-week diary of when it happens will tell you and your doctor more than guessing. Any cough lasting more than 3 weeks should be checked, as should one with red flags.

Before you start

  • Common patterns: after a cold or fever, allergy or mould, asthma, or reflux.
  • Keep a diary: time of day, triggers, wheeze, phlegm, fever.
  • Check at 3 weeks: NHS advice is to see a GP if a cough lasts more than 3 weeks.
  • Urgent: coughing blood, breathlessness, chest pain, or feeling very unwell.

Why does a cough last after the rains?

Three families of reasons come up most. This article helps you describe a pattern, not name a disease.

After a cold or fever

The airway lining stays irritated for a while after a virus, so a dry, tickly cough can linger. The NHS says a cough often clears up on its own within 3 to 4 weeks. Usually it is getting better, not worse.

Allergy and mould

Damp walls, wet bedding and humid cupboards grow mould, and dust mites also thrive in humid air. The cough often comes with sneezing, itchy eyes or a blocked nose and is worse at night or on waking. The usual household triggers are in the rainy season asthma and allergy triggers guide, which this page does not repeat.

Asthma that flares

Damp air and chest infections can set off asthma. A cough with wheeze, a tight chest, or breathlessness on stairs or at play points that way. Only a doctor can diagnose it, and anyone with known asthma should follow their own plan from their doctor.

How do I keep a two-week cough diary?

  1. Each day, note the time of the worst coughing: morning, daytime, night, or after exercise.
  2. Write whether it is dry or brings up phlegm, and its colour.
  3. Note wheeze, noisy breathing, fever, runny nose, itchy eyes or heartburn.
  4. Note what came before: dusty room, cold air, a damp cupboard, a meal, a smoke source.
  5. After 14 days, look for a pattern and take it to the doctor.

Note the time it peaks

Write down when the cough is worst for a week. Peaks at night or first thing in the morning often point to allergy, asthma or reflux, which are worth showing a doctor, while a cough that is steadily fading each day looks more like the tail of a cold.

What can I do at home meanwhile?

Drink plenty of fluids, keep the bedroom dry and well ventilated, wash bedding in hot water, stay away from smoke and incense, and keep clothes from sitting damp in cupboards. Honey must never be given to a child under 1 year. Avoid giving cough medicines to children under 6, and do not give any medicine without checking with a pharmacist or doctor. For children’s coughs by age see the child cough guide.

When does a cough need a test?

If a cough passes 3 weeks, see a doctor. The 3-week route, including the TB question, is explained in the cough lasting 3 weeks guide. Earlier help is needed for coughing up blood, weight loss without reason, night sweats, a swollen painful neck, or a weak immune system, as for people with diabetes or on chemotherapy.

When to see a doctor

Go the same day for trouble breathing, chest pain, blue lips, coughing blood, a severe cough that is rapidly worse, or feeling very unwell. In a child, fast breathing, chest sucking in, a fever in a baby under 3 months, drowsiness or refusing fluids are emergencies. Do not start, stop or change any inhaler or other medicine on your own. This page helps you describe a pattern and is not a diagnosis.

Lingering cough questions

Why is my cough not going away after the monsoon?

It may be the tail of a cold, an allergy to damp and mould, or asthma. If it lasts more than 3 weeks or has red flags, see a doctor.

How long does a post-viral cough last?

Often up to 3 to 4 weeks. It should slowly improve. If it worsens or goes past 3 weeks, get it checked.

Why do I have a dry cough at night after the rains?

Night coughs can come from allergy to dust mites or mould, asthma, reflux or a postnasal drip. A diary of when it peaks helps your doctor.

Barish ke baad khansi kyun hoti hai?

Barish ke baad nami se mould aur dust mites barh jate hain, aur nazla zukam bhi aam hota hai. Agar khansi 3 hafte se zyada chale to doctor ko dikhayen.

What are the symptoms of a mould cough?

Cough with sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, blocked nose and sometimes wheeze, worse in damp rooms. Only a doctor can say whether mould is the cause.

Cough with wheeze in rainy season, is it asthma?

It can be, but wheeze has other causes too. Book a doctor visit; breathlessness is an emergency.

When should I see a doctor for a cough?

See one if it lasts more than 3 weeks, or sooner for breathlessness, chest pain, blood or feeling very unwell.

Why does my child cough after rain?

Usually a cold or damp-air trigger. Children with fast breathing, wheeze or fever for over 3 days need a doctor.

Can fever and cough pass but cough stay?

Yes, the cough often outlasts the fever by days or weeks. Watch that it is improving.
