Kalonji and Alsi Mix: The Base Ratio, Per Spoon Maths and Uses
The short answer: kalonji and alsi together make a good everyday seed mix, not a medicine. Alsi brings the omega-3 and fibre, kalonji brings the flavour, and the ratio that works best is 3 parts alsi to 1 part kalonji, lightly roasted, cooled and coarsely ground. This guide covers that base mix: what one teaspoon really gives, how to make and store it, where to use it, and which goal each of our other kalonji and alsi guides answers.
Before you start
- Base batch: 90 g alsi (flaxseed) and 30 g kalonji (nigella seed), 120 g in all.
- Serving: 1 level teaspoon of the ground mix, about 4 g.
- What that spoon gives: about 20 kcal, close to 1 g fibre, about 0.65 g ALA omega-3.
- Sensible daily amount: 1 to 2 teaspoons, with water or on food.
- Keeps: about 2 weeks airtight, in the fridge in summer.

WhatsApp forwards sell kalonji and alsi as a “powerful” mix for everything from sugar to hair fall. The truth is less dramatic and more useful. Alsi is mild, nutty and loaded with a plant omega-3 called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), but tastes flat alone; kalonji has almost no ALA but gives a peppery, onion-like bite and carries thymoquinone, the compound behind its reputation, so together they taste good enough that people actually keep eating them. That’s the whole point. This pillar is part of our Desi Remedies series.
What one teaspoon of kalonji and alsi mix actually gives
At 3 to 1, a 4 g teaspoon holds 3 g of alsi and 1 g of kalonji. The figures below come from standard food-composition values per 100 g, multiplied down and rounded. Treat them as approximate. Alsi values are well established; kalonji values vary a lot between tables and harvests, so its share is the fuzzier part.
| Nutrient | Per 4 g teaspoon (approx.) | Against a day’s need |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | about 20 kcal | about 1% |
| ALA omega-3 | about 0.65 g | about 60% of a woman’s 1.1 g, about 40% of a man’s 1.6 g |
| Fibre | about 0.9 g | about 3% of 30 g |
| Protein | about 0.75 g | under 2% |
| Magnesium | about 15 mg | about 4% |
| Calcium | about 10 mg | about 1% |
| Iron | about 0.3 mg | about 2% for a woman (18 mg) |
The working, so you can trust it. Alsi carries roughly 534 kcal, 23 g ALA and 27 g fibre per 100 g. So 3 g of alsi gives 16 kcal, 0.68 g ALA and 0.82 g fibre. Kalonji is roughly 400 kcal per 100 g, so its 1 g adds about 4 kcal and a little fibre, and almost no ALA. Add them up: about 20 kcal, about 0.65 to 0.7 g ALA, close to 1 g fibre.
The omega-3 is the headline. The calcium and iron are rounding errors.
That ALA figure is genuinely useful for families who rarely eat fish, since two teaspoons cover most of a day’s ALA, but ALA isn’t the EPA and DHA found in fish and the body converts only a small share of it. It supports a low-fish diet. It doesn’t replace fish.
What each seed is doing in the jar
- Alsi (flaxseed): nearly all the ALA and fibre, and a nutty base that softens kalonji. Whole alsi often passes through undigested, so grind it; our alsi grinding and storing guide has the detail.
- Kalonji (nigella seed): taste and tradition. At 1 g you’re eating a spice amount of thymoquinone. See our kalonji seed and oil guide.
Did you know? Kalonji is sold as “black cumin” or “onion seed”, yet it’s neither; it comes from Nigella sativa, a flowering plant in the buttercup family. Real kalonji is matte, angular and smells peppery when crushed.
How to make the base mix properly
- Pick 90 g alsi and 30 g kalonji clean of stones, then dry-roast the alsi alone in a heavy pan on low heat for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring, until it starts to crackle and smells nutty. Tip it onto a plate.
- Roast the kalonji separately for 1 to 2 minutes, only until fragrant. Burnt kalonji tastes harsh.
- Let both cool completely, about 20 minutes.
- Mix and grind in short pulses to a coarse powder.
- Spoon into a dry, airtight glass jar. Keep it in a dark cupboard in winter, in the fridge from about April to October.
- Make only 2 weeks’ worth. At 2 teaspoons a day, 120 g lasts about 15 days.
The smell test before every spoon
Fresh mix smells nutty and faintly peppery. Old paint, crayons or fishy oil, or a sharp bitterness at the back of the throat, means rancid alsi. Throw the whole jar out.
Where to use kalonji and alsi in everyday food
Knead a spoon or two into roti atta, the easiest daily habit. Stir a teaspoon into a katori of raita with bhuna zeera. Blend it into podina chutney, dust it over kheera and chana chaat, or bind it with gur and til into winter laddoo. In warm water, drink it straight away before it thickens. Tawa cooking keeps most of the ALA; deep frying doesn’t, so leave it out of pakora batter.
Which mix for which goal
The base mix is a fair start for every goal below. Each has its own guide.
| Your goal | Best version | Read next |
|---|---|---|
| Omega-3 and fibre daily | This base mix, 1 to 2 tsp | how much alsi and the thyroid gap |
| Softer bowels, easy drink | Soaked alsi water or gel | soaked alsi: whole, ground or gel |
| Weight loss support | Base mix in roti or raita, not extra | seeds for weight loss compared |
| Hair fall | Alsi, methi, kalonji mix plus blood tests | hair growth seed mix decoded |
| Cough and colds season | Kalonji as food, not medicine | kalonji for cough checked |
| Skin and scalp | Oil on skin, never the powder raw | kalonji oil patch test guide |
What if you change the ratio?
- More kalonji (1 to 1): sharper, more bitter, and some people get heartburn. And half the ALA per spoon goes.
- More alsi (4 to 1): milder and slightly more ALA and fibre. Make smaller batches.
- Bigger spoon: a tablespoon (about 10 g) gives about 1.6 g ALA and 2 g fibre, plus more gas. Build up slowly.
- Adding til: a handful of sesame lifts calcium and taste. A good optional upgrade: 80 g alsi, 20 g kalonji and 20 g til.
What kalonji and alsi can’t do
Forwards promise the spoon “controls sugar”, “clears arteries” or “melts belly fat”. Not at a food spoon. The fibre and omega-3 fit well in a diabetes or heart-friendly plate, but a teaspoon won’t bring down HbA1c, BP or cholesterol on its own, and it’s never a reason to change a prescribed medicine. “Kalonji is a remedy for every disease except death” is a well-loved saying; it’s tradition, not a nutrition label.
You take medicines: kalonji may add to the effect of blood thinners, diabetes medicines and BP medicines. Whether the mix suits you, and at what amount, is your doctor’s call; never start, stop or change a medicine because of it. Thyroid pills: keep alsi at least 4 hours away from levothyroxine, as our thyroid gap guide explains.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: kalonji in ordinary cooking amounts only, no daily medicinal spoons and no kalonji oil. Children: half a teaspoon of the ground mix on food is plenty; never whole seeds under 5, because they can be inhaled. Tummy: start with half a teaspoon, drink water with it, and stop if bloating, cramps or loose motions persist. Surgery: tell the surgeon about any daily seed or herbal habit, since kalonji may affect bleeding.
Cheaper food swaps that give more
For omega-3, one small piece of rohu or salmon beats weeks of spoons for EPA and DHA. For fibre, a katori of cooked chana or rajma gives 7 to 8 g, several times a teaspoon. For calcium, a glass of milk gives about 300 mg. The mix is a tasty extra, not the main event.
Kalonji and alsi questions people ask
What is the best ratio of kalonji and alsi?
Three parts alsi to one part kalonji works best for most people. It keeps the omega-3 high and the taste pleasant. Going 1 to 1 makes it bitter and halves the ALA per spoon.
How much kalonji and alsi should I eat daily?
One to two level teaspoons of the ground mix a day is a sensible food amount for adults. Start with half a teaspoon for a week if your stomach is sensitive. More isn’t better and brings gas and bloating.
Should kalonji and alsi be eaten raw or roasted?
Lightly roasted tastes better and grinds cleaner, and the ALA survives gentle roasting. Raw is fine too if ground. Just never eat alsi whole and expect the benefit.
Is kalonji and alsi good for diabetes?
It fits well in a diabetes plate because of its fibre and healthy fat. It doesn’t replace medicine, and kalonji may add to sugar-lowering tablets, so check readings and tell your doctor.
Can kalonji and alsi help with weight loss?
Only as part of a meal that keeps you fuller. The spoon itself adds about 20 kcal and doesn’t burn fat. Our seeds for weight loss comparison covers where it fits.
Can I give kalonji and alsi to my child?
From about 1 year, a pinch to half a teaspoon of the ground mix mixed into food is fine. Never whole seeds under 5. Skip it for a child with a stomach illness.
Is kalonji and alsi safe in pregnancy?
Kalonji in normal cooking amounts is fine, but skip daily medicinal spoons and kalonji oil. Alsi as a food amount is usually fine. Your gynaecologist has the final word.
Does kalonji and alsi cause acidity?
Kalonji can trigger heartburn in some people, especially on an empty stomach. Take it with food, and cut the kalonji share if it bothers you.
Can I use kalonji and alsi with thyroid medicine?
Yes, but keep alsi at least 4 hours away from levothyroxine, because fibre can reduce its absorption. Tell your doctor so thyroid tests are read with this in mind.
