Hara Dhania Not Growing? Fix Germination, Bolting, Thin Plants

Three things explain nearly every failed pot of coriander (Hara Dhania): whole seeds sown without splitting, seeds buried too deep, and sowing in the wrong month. If you typed “why coriander not germinating” into a search bar, start there. This guide works through each stage where dhania goes wrong, from seeds that never appear to plants that shoot up thin and flower in a fortnight, with the fix for each.

Before you sow again

  • Pot size: 8 to 10 litres, wide, and 6 to 8 inches deep
  • Sun: 4 to 5 hours, morning sun best
  • Sowing months (plains): October to February; mid October to November is easiest
  • Sprouting time: 7 to 14 days, up to 3 weeks in cold weather
  • First harvest: 30 to 40 days after sowing
  • Never: transplant it, or expect one sowing to last all year

Did you know? The round “seed” in your masala box is really a dry fruit with two seeds inside, held shut by a hard husk. Split it and you get two plants, and water reaches them days sooner.

Sabut dhania from the kitchen often sprouts, but not always. Spice that has sat in a jar for two years, or was dried with heat, may be dead. A quick test saves a wasted month: fold ten split seeds in a damp cloth, keep it moist in a dark cupboard, and count the sprouts after 10 days. Fewer than five? Buy a packet of sowing seed.

How to sow dhania so it actually comes up

  1. Split the seeds. Spread them on a cloth and roll a rolling pin or the flat of a slipper over them with light pressure. You want clean halves, not powder.
  2. Soak for 8 to 12 hours in plain water, then drain. This step is optional but shaves a few days off.
  3. Fill a wide pot 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) deep with loose mix; see the potting mix ratios. Water it and let it drain before sowing.
  4. Scatter the halves about half an inch apart, right where they will grow.
  5. Cover lightly. A quarter to half an inch (about 1 cm) of fine mix, no more. Deep burial is the quiet killer.
  6. Water with a sprinkle, not a pour, so seeds don’t wash into one corner. A bottle with holes in the cap is ideal.
  7. Keep the surface damp every day until you see green, usually in 7 to 14 days. A sheet of newspaper laid on top holds moisture; lift it the day sprouts show.

Why does coriander bolt and flower so fast?

Bolting means the plant stops making leaves and sends up a tall flower stalk, with thin, feathery foliage that tastes sharp. Dhania is a cool season crop, and heat is its main trigger. Dry soil and a cramped, root bound pot push it the same way.

So in the plains, a March sowing bolts within weeks, and an April one barely leafs at all. Nothing is wrong with your care. The plant reads warm days as “time to make seed.”

What slows it down:

  1. Sow in the right window. October to February in Lahore, Delhi and similar plains.
  2. Never let the pot dry right out. In warm spells check daily; our watering guide shows the finger test.
  3. Shift to morning sun only from late February, with shade after noon.
  4. Harvest regularly. Frequent cutting delays flowering a little.
  5. Pinch out the first flower stalks low down. It buys a week or two, not a new season.

Can dhania grow in summer?

In the plains from May to August, honestly, not well. You can coax a small crop in bright shade with no afternoon sun, daily watering and seed sold as slow bolting, but expect a short, thin harvest. Most gardeners who succeed in summer are sowing a tiny pinch every two weeks and cutting it young at 3 to 4 inches, as a baby leaf.

The hills are the opposite. In Murree, Quetta or Shimla, dhania is a March to September crop and winter is too cold. On the coast, Karachi and Mumbai get a shorter window, roughly November to January.

The habit that ends the dhania struggle: a pinch every two to three weeks

Stop trying to keep one big pot alive. Dhania is a short crop, finished in 8 to 10 weeks even when everything goes right. Keep three small pots instead, and sow one fresh pinch (about a teaspoon of split seed) every two to three weeks from October. As the oldest pot runs to flower, the middle one is at full cut and the youngest is just sprouting. You never run out, and no single failure matters.

Why are my dhania plants thin, weak or falling over?

Too little light. Seedlings on a dim windowsill stretch toward the glass and flop. They need 4 to 5 hours of real sun in winter.

Too crowded. A fistful of seed in a small pot gives a mat of threads that rot at the base. Half an inch between seeds is plenty.

Transplanting. Dhania grows one long central root that hates being disturbed. Seedlings moved from a tray, or nursery clumps pulled apart, usually sulk and then bolt. Sow in the final pot, every time.

Wet feet. If seedlings pinch in at soil level and keel over, the surface is staying too wet. Water in the morning and let the top dry by evening.

How to cut dhania so it grows back

Start when plants are 5 to 6 inches tall, around 30 to 40 days from sowing. Take the outer stems first, cutting about an inch above the soil with scissors and leaving the small centre leaves untouched. Never strip more than a third at once. A pot handled this way gives two or three good cuts before it tires.

Then let one pot go. The white flowers draw bees and hoverflies to the balcony, the green seeds taste bright and citrusy in chutney, and once the heads turn brown you can rub out dry seed for next October. Store it in a paper envelope, somewhere dry.

Bought a bunch you can’t finish? Keeping it fresh is covered in our hara dhania storage guide. For companions that share dhania’s season, see what to sow on a winter balcony.

Take care with

Dhania is eaten raw and picked within weeks, so never use insect killer, fly spray or mothball water on or near the pot; pick off pests by hand or snip the affected stems. Wash leaves under running water before use, especially if birds visit the balcony. Empty saucers after each watering, because still water breeds dengue mosquitoes. Don’t sow in soil scooped from a roadside or building site, which may carry paint, oil or rubble.

Dhania growing problems: quick answers

Why is my dhania not growing?

Most often it’s the season. Dhania grows well only in cool weather, October to February in the plains. Outside that window it stays small and flowers early, whatever you do.

Why are my dhania seeds not sprouting?

Whole seeds, deep sowing, or a surface that dried out are the usual reasons. Split the seeds into halves, cover them with no more than half an inch of mix, and keep the top damp every day for two weeks.

How many days does dhania take to grow?

Sprouts show in 7 to 14 days and the first cutting comes at 30 to 40 days. The whole life of a pot is about 8 to 10 weeks.

How can I grow dhania fast?

Split and soak the seeds overnight, sow in October or November, and keep the surface moist. That’s as fast as it goes. No fertiliser makes it sprout sooner.

What is coriander bolting?

It’s the switch from leaf growth to flowering. The plant sends up a tall stalk and the new leaves turn fine and feathery. Heat and dry soil bring it on.

Can I stop dhania from flowering?

You can delay it, not stop it. Keep the soil moist, give afternoon shade in warm weather, and cut often. Once stalks are rising, sow a fresh pot.

Can I grow dhania from kitchen sabut dhania?

Often, yes, if the spice is fairly fresh. Test ten split seeds in a damp cloth first. If fewer than five sprout in 10 days, buy sowing seed.

Should I soak dhania seeds before planting?

It helps but isn’t essential. Eight to twelve hours in plain water softens the husk. Splitting matters more than soaking.

How deep should dhania seeds be sown?

A quarter to half an inch, roughly 1 cm. Seeds buried an inch or deeper often exhaust themselves before reaching the light.

Does dhania need full sun?

In winter it wants 4 to 5 hours of direct sun. From late February, morning sun with afternoon shade keeps it leafy for longer.

Can I transplant dhania seedlings?

It’s best not to. The single long root resents disturbance, and moved seedlings tend to stall and flower early. Sow directly where it will grow.

Does dhania grow back after cutting?

Yes, two or three times, if you cut an inch above the soil and leave the centre shoots. After that the plant flowers and a new sowing takes over.
