Grow Radish (Mooli) and Carrots (Gajar) in Deep Pots at Home

How to grow radish in pots, and carrots beside them, comes down to three things: a pot deeper than the root you want, a loose mix with no stones or lumps, and seed sown straight into its final home. Get those right and radish (Mooli) is the fastest vegetable a beginner can pull, while carrots (Gajar) reward patience. Here is the pot depth for each type, the sowing months for the plains, and the reasons roots come out forked, split or tiny.

Quick facts

  • Pot for small round radish: 6 to 8 inches deep, 8 litres or more
  • Pot for long desi mooli: 14 to 16 inches deep, 20 to 25 litres
  • Pot for carrots: 12 to 14 inches deep, 15 to 20 litres (short varieties manage in 10 inches)
  • Sun: 5 to 6 hours of winter sun
  • Sowing in the plains: radish September to January, carrots late September to November
  • Days to first harvest: small radish about 30, long mooli 45 to 60, carrots 90 to 110

How deep a pot do radish and carrots need?

Deeper than you think. The root you eat is the plant’s tap root, and it grows straight down until something stops it. When it hits the pot base, it stops lengthening. That’s all.

So measure the root you’re hoping for and add 4 inches. A long white desi mooli can reach 10 to 12 inches, which is why it needs a tall grow bag, an old paint bucket with holes drilled in the base, or a 16 inch pot. Round red salad radish is happy in a shallow tub. Carrots sit in between: the stubby and half-long kinds suit pots far better than the long red desi gajar, which really wants open ground, so check the seed packet for words like “short”, “half long” or “Nantes”.

Width matters less than depth. A 12 inch wide pot holds about 8 to 10 carrots or 4 to 5 long mooli at proper spacing.

What potting mix stops forked and stunted roots?

A root that meets a stone, a hard clod or a lump of half-rotted compost splits around it and comes out with two or three legs. Loose and fine is the whole brief.

Mix 1 part garden soil, 1 part cocopeat or coarse sand and 1 part old, crumbly compost, then rub it through your fingers (or a kitchen sieve kept for the garden) and pick out every pebble. Skip fresh manure completely. Too much nitrogen gives a huge bush of leaves on top of a hairy, forked root. Ratios for other pots are in our potting mix guide.

Did you know? The first farmed carrots, grown around Afghanistan roughly a thousand years ago, were purple and yellow. Orange came much later.

How to sow radish and carrots in pots, step by step

  1. Fill and settle. Fill the pot to 1 inch below the rim and water it well the day before, so the mix settles without being pressed down by hand.
  2. Sow shallow. Radish seed goes about half an inch deep (1 cm), carrot seed a quarter to half an inch. Carrot seed is tiny, so mix a pinch with a spoon of dry sand and sprinkle that.
  3. Space radish at sowing. Drop round radish seeds 1 to 2 inches apart and long mooli 4 to 6 inches apart, two seeds per spot.
  4. Keep the surface damp. Mist or use a bottle with holes in the cap every day until you see green. Radish is up in 3 to 5 days. Carrots take 10 to 20, and if the top dries out even once in that time, they simply don’t appear.
  5. Thin with scissors. When seedlings are 2 inches tall, snip the extras at soil level so carrots stand 2 to 3 inches apart and mooli has its full spacing. Pulling disturbs the neighbours.
  6. Top up. If the shoulder of a carrot pokes out, cover it with a little mix. Sunlight turns exposed shoulders green and bitter.

The rule nurseries won’t tell you: never transplant a root crop

Seedling trays of carrot or mooli look like a head start. They aren’t. The moment that thread of a tap root is bent or nipped during the move, it grows on as a forked, stunted vegetable, however well you care for it afterwards. Sow where it will finish, and thin instead of shifting. Tomatoes forgive a transplant; root crops keep the scar.

When to sow in Lahore, Karachi and Delhi

Both are cool-season crops. In Lahore and Delhi, sow radish from mid September to January and carrots from late September to mid November, once the nights have lost their heat. Karachi and other coastal cities stay warm longer, so start about three to four weeks later and expect a shorter season. In the hills (Murree, Abbottabad, Shimla) the timing flips: sow from March to August, because winter is too cold for seed to sprout.

Sow a fresh pinch of radish every two weeks and you’ll have a steady supply instead of twenty roots on one Friday. The month by month sowing calendar shows what else shares these weeks, and the winter balcony sowing list covers the leafy crops that pair well.

Why are my carrots small, forked or split?

Almost every root problem traces back to depth, crowding or water.

Thin as a pencilNot thinned, or pulled too earlyThin to 2 to 3 inches, wait
Split down the sideDry spell followed by a floodWater evenly, never in bursts

Even watering is the quiet skill here. Push a finger 1 inch into the mix and water when it feels dry, usually every 2 to 3 days in a Punjab winter and more often in a windy spot. The watering guide for pots explains the finger test by season.

Myth: a bigger radish is a better radish

The opposite, for the small salad types. A round radish left a week past its prime turns pithy, hollow and sharp enough to make your eyes water. Pull it at about 1 inch across. Long desi mooli holds better, but once a flower stalk starts rising from the centre, the root goes woody fast.

Harvesting, and eating the tops

Scrape away a little mix and look at the shoulder. Carrots are ready when the top is about as wide as your thumb, mooli when it matches the size on the packet. Water the pot an hour before, hold the leaves low, and pull straight up with a slight twist.

Don’t bin the greens. Mooli leaves make the classic mooli ke patton ki bhujia and go into parathas, and if a plant does bolt, its crisp green seed pods (mongray, moongre) are a vegetable in their own right. Carrot tops are edible too, slightly bitter, best chopped small into a chutney or daal. Wash all leaves well in running water. More root to leaf cooking ideas sit in our Zero-Waste Kitchen section.

One honest note: a few pots give you salad for the table and parathas now and then. They won’t replace the sabzi wala’s winter cart.

Worth knowing first

A 25 litre pot of wet soil weighs about as much as a small child, so on a roof place deep pots along walls and over beams, never clustered mid slab, and never balance one on a railing. Empty saucers after watering; standing water is where dengue mosquitoes breed. Keep insect sprays off anything you’ll eat raw, and wash hands after handling compost. Carrot leaves can irritate sensitive skin in a few people, so wear gloves if your hands itch after thinning.

Radish and carrot questions from pot growers

How to grow carrots in pots?

Sow the seed thinly, a quarter to half an inch deep, in a pot at least 12 inches deep filled with a fine, stone free mix. Keep the surface damp until seedlings show, thin them to 2 to 3 inches apart, give 5 to 6 hours of sun, and wait about three months.

How deep pot for radish?

Six to eight inches is enough for small round radish. Long white desi mooli needs 14 to 16 inches, because the root itself can grow close to a foot.

How long does mooli take to grow?

Long desi mooli takes about 45 to 60 days from sowing in cool weather. Small red salad radish is ready in roughly 30 days, which makes it the quickest root you can grow.

Why are my carrots small?

Crowding is the usual reason. Carrots that were never thinned compete for space and stay pencil thin. A shallow pot, less than 5 hours of sun, or pulling them before 90 days does the same.

Can I transplant carrot seedlings?

No. Moving a carrot seedling bends or breaks its tap root, and the result is a forked, stunted carrot. Always sow carrots and radish directly where they will grow.

Can radish and carrots share one pot?

Yes, and it’s a neat trick. Sow them together in a deep pot. The radish is pulled within a month or so, which loosens the mix and leaves room just as the slow carrots start to swell.

Which month is best to sow gajar in Pakistan and North India?

October is the safest month in the plains. Late September works once nights cool, and sowing can continue to mid November. Hill stations sow from March to July instead.

Do radish and carrots need fertilizer in pots?

Very little. Old compost in the mix is enough for radish. Carrots appreciate a handful of compost or a spoon of wood ash scratched in at about six weeks, but rich feeding gives leaves, not roots.
