Desi Weight Gain

Can You Gain Weight Only in Hips, Face or Cheeks? Honestly

Answer: no, you can’t choose where new fat lands. Your genes and hormones decide whether gain shows first in your face, hips, belly or arms. What you can shape is muscle: strength training builds glutes and shoulders so hips and upper body look fuller, and steady overall gain softens a hollow face over time. Creams and injections from unlicensed sellers are a risk, not a shortcut.

At a glance

  • Spot gain: a myth, the same way spot reduction is.
  • What shapes hips: glute exercises (squats, bridges, lunges) plus enough food to build muscle.
  • What fills a thin face: overall weight gain, good sleep, and time.
  • Avoid: “hip-up” creams, unlabelled pills and filler injections from non-doctors.
  • See a doctor: if weight won’t rise despite good eating.

“Mujhe sirf chehre pe wazan chahiye.” “I want hips, not a belly.” These are some of the most searched weight gain wishes, and the internet is full of creams, pills and “desi totkay” that promise exactly that. The honest answer is less magical, but more useful. This guide explains how fat really spreads, what training can shape, and which products are risky.

Why you can’t pick where fat goes

Think of your body as a set of storage cupboards. When you eat more than you burn, the extra gets stored, but your genes and hormones decide which cupboards fill first, so one sister fills out in the face while another gains only in the thighs, and a brother on the same food at the same dastarkhwan puts it all round his middle without a trace on his cheeks. You can’t send it to one cupboard. Not with a cream, not with a special food.

That’s why spot gain is a myth, exactly like spot reduction. Our piece on why face fat can’t be spot reduced covers the same science from the other side. Fat spreads across the whole body in a pattern you inherited.

Hormones play a role too: women tend to store more in the hips and thighs during their younger years, men tend to store it round the middle, and after menopause many women find the pattern shifts toward the belly, which is why a mother and daughter eating the same meals can end up with very different shapes. None of it answers to a cream. None.

One more thing first: if you’re thin and can’t gain despite eating well, see a doctor. Thyroid problems, diabetes, TB, worms, coeliac disease, depression and eating disorders can all keep weight low.

What you can change: muscle shapes hips and shoulders

Muscle is different. It grows where you train it. The glutes (the muscles of the buttocks) are the biggest muscles in the body, and training them builds visible fullness and shape at the hips. Shoulder and back work makes a slim upper body look broader. This is the real, honest route to a curvier or fuller frame.

  1. Squats: feet shoulder-width apart, sit back as if into a chair, stand. 3 rounds of 12. Hold a filled 1.5 litre water bottle at your chest when it gets easy.
  2. Glute bridges: lie on your back, knees bent, lift your hips, squeeze for 2 seconds, lower. 3 rounds of 15.
  3. Reverse lunges: step one foot back, lower the back knee toward the floor, return. 3 rounds of 10 per leg.
  4. Side-lying leg raises: lie on one side, lift the top leg slowly. 3 rounds of 15 per side for the upper hips.
  5. Wall or knee push-ups and bottle rows: 3 rounds of 10 each, for shoulders and back.
  6. Schedule: 3 sessions a week, 30 minutes each, with a rest day between. Add reps or weight every 2 weeks.

Muscle needs food. Add about 300 to 500 kcal a day above your usual intake and protein at every meal: eggs, daal, chana, dahi, paneer, chicken or fish. Our guide to muscle gain on a budget gives a full desi plan without supplements. Expect visible change over 2 to 3 months, not 2 weeks.

Did you know? A person can look thin in the arms and face and still carry fat at the belly, sometimes called “skinny fat”. Strength training plus steady eating improves that far better than adding sweets alone.

Filling out a thin face

There’s no workout for cheeks. Face yoga and cheek puffing don’t add fat, and what actually helps is overall weight gain, because as the whole body stores a little more the face usually fills out too, although in some people it’s the last place to show any change, often lagging weeks or months behind the hips and arms. Patience.

Other things change how a face looks. A lot. Poor sleep, dehydration and dark circles make a face look tired and hollow, and years of sunburn and smoking thin the skin and the fat pads beneath it, so a thin 30-year-old who sleeps five hours, lives on chai and skips sunscreen will look far more gaunt than her weight alone explains. So sleep 7 to 9 hours, drink enough water, use sunscreen, and give it time. A very sudden hollowing of the face, especially with weight loss, is a reason to see a doctor.

Myth: creams, pills and injections can add fat where you want

Hip-enlarging creams, “breast and hip” capsules and cheek-fattening pills are sold widely online. No cream can make fat cells grow in one spot. Unlabelled pills can contain hidden steroids or cyproheptadine (an appetite drug), which bring moon face, swelling, stretch marks and rising sugar. Our report on hidden steroids in weight gain powders explains the warning signs.

Injections are riskier still. Fillers and “buttock injections” done by unlicensed people in salons or homes have caused serious infections, lumps, disfigurement and, with illegal injected silicone, deaths. Cosmetic procedures should only be done by a qualified, registered doctor who explains the risks honestly. For more safe gain plans, see our Desi Weight Gain section.

What realistic progress looks like

For most adults, 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week is healthy gain. Measure hips and waist with a tape once a month and take a photo in the same light and the same clothes, because the scale alone can mislead you when muscle, which is denser than fat, is slowly replacing some of the softness you had before and the number barely moves even though your jeans fit differently. If hips grow while the waist stays steady, you’re building muscle, not just fat.

Before you buy or inject anything

Never use creams, pills or powders without a clear label and registration, and never accept an injection of filler, fat or silicone from anyone who isn’t a qualified doctor. Seek care the same day for redness, heat, hard lumps, fever or pain after any cosmetic injection. If weight won’t go up despite eating well, or you lose weight without trying, see a doctor to rule out an illness. People with diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease should plan weight gain with their doctor or a dietitian. If you take any medicine, the doctor decides whether anything about it changes.

Questions people ask about gaining weight in the hips, face or cheeks

Can I gain weight only in my hips?

Not fat, no. Genes decide where fat goes. But glute exercises build muscle at the hips, which can make them fuller and rounder over a few months.

How can I gain weight in my face?

By gaining weight overall and giving it time. There’s no food or exercise that adds fat just to the face.

Do chubby cheeks exercises work?

No. Cheek puffing and face yoga don’t add fat to the face. At best they tone small muscles slightly.

Why does my weight go to my belly and not my hips?

That’s your inherited pattern, affected by sex, hormones and age. Strength training for the glutes can help balance your shape.

Do hip enlargement creams work?

No cream can grow fat in one place. Some products contain unlisted ingredients, so avoid them.

How long does it take to get bigger hips with exercise?

Usually 2 to 3 months of regular glute training with enough food before you see a clear change. Keep adding reps or weight.

What foods increase hip size?

No food targets the hips. Enough calories and protein support muscle growth wherever you train, and your genes decide fat spread.

Are butt injections safe?

Injections from non-doctors are dangerous and have caused infections, deformity and deaths. Only a registered doctor should do any cosmetic procedure.

Why is my face thin but my body normal?

Some people naturally store less fat in the face. Tiredness, dehydration and age can also make it look hollower. Sudden change needs a doctor’s check.

Can weight gain pills make my face fuller?

Some unlabelled pills cause a swollen moon face because they contain hidden steroids. That’s a side effect, not healthy gain, and it’s risky.

Can women build glutes without a gym?

Yes. Squats, bridges, lunges and leg raises at home, with water bottles for extra load, work well when done regularly.
