Fogging for Dengue: Does It Work and What Can You Do?
Fogging kills flying adult mosquitoes for a short time, but it does not remove the eggs and larvae sitting in water around your home. That makes it a supplement, not a fix. The most effective step is still emptying and scrubbing water containers. If a fogging truck comes by, close windows, cover food and water, keep children and anyone with asthma indoors, and air the rooms afterwards.
Fogging in short
- What it does: kills adult mosquitoes in the air, briefly
- What it misses: eggs, larvae and pupae in water
- Your job: empty and scrub water spots weekly
- During fogging: windows shut, food and water covered
- After: air the room once the smoke has cleared outside

Does fogging stop dengue?
On its own, no. Think of a house with a leaking tap. Fogging is like wiping the floor, while emptying water is like fixing the tap. The EPA describes spraying for adults as one of the fastest options in an outbreak, but it also says that removing breeding sites and treating larvae is generally the most effective, least costly way to control mosquitoes. It also notes that these methods are not 100 percent effective for Aedes, which breeds in scattered spots.
So fogging belongs in an outbreak response run by the municipality. It does not replace what you do at home.
How does fogging work, in simple terms?
A machine, usually on a truck or carried by a worker, puts out fine droplets or a smoke that drift through the air. Mosquitoes flying through it can be killed on contact. After the cloud settles, new mosquitoes can arrive from untreated yards or hatch from water that was never emptied. That is why the effect is short, and why fogging is repeated in outbreaks.
Larvicide or fogging: what is the difference?
| Fogging | Larvicide and emptying | |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Flying adults | Eggs, larvae and pupae in water |
| Effect | Quick but short | Slower but lasting |
| Who does it | Municipal teams | You, plus health workers |
| Best use | Outbreak response | Every week, all year |
What should I do when the fogging truck comes?
Insider tip: the 5 minute fogging routine
As soon as you hear or see the truck, shut windows and doors, switch off fans that pull outside air in, and cover stored water, food, utensils and baby bottles. Bring pets in. Keep everyone indoors until the cloud has cleared, then open windows and air the room. Wipe any food surface that was uncovered. Check your municipal notice for local instructions.
Is fogging safe for health?
It uses insecticide, so it is not something to breathe on purpose. Most people are fine when they stay indoors and air the room afterwards, but the smoke can irritate eyes, nose and throat. People with asthma or breathing trouble, young children, pregnant women and older people should stay away from the cloud. If you or someone at home has asthma, read asthma and allergy triggers at home and keep their usual plan ready. Do not do home fogging with kitchen sprays or pesticides not made for it, since they can poison people and pets.
What matters more than fogging at home?
- Do a weekly water check using the Aedes breeding check.
- Put mesh on windows and wear covering clothes by day.
- Use a repellent per the repellent guide.
- Learn the signs from dengue symptoms and prevention.
- Tell your local health office about neglected standing water in your lane.

Limits and when to see a doctor
This page gives general guidance, and your municipality’s notice comes first. If anyone coughs, wheezes, has watery eyes or feels short of breath after fogging, move them to clean air and see a doctor if it does not settle. Seek emergency help for severe breathing trouble: 1122 in Pakistan, 112 in India. For fever with severe headache, vomiting, belly pain, bleeding or drowsiness, see a doctor the same day and avoid painkillers unless the doctor says so.
Fogging questions
Does fogging stop dengue?
It reduces flying adult mosquitoes for a short time, but it does not remove larvae in water. Emptying and scrubbing containers is what lasts.
Is fogging safe for health?
Most healthy people are fine indoors with windows shut, but the smoke can irritate eyes and airways. Sensitive people should avoid it.
Can fogging cause an asthma attack?
It can irritate the airways and may trigger symptoms in some people with asthma. Keep them indoors with windows closed and follow their doctor’s plan.
What should I do during fogging?
Close windows and doors, cover food and water, stay inside, and open windows to air the room after the cloud has gone.
What is the difference between fogging and larvicide?
Fogging targets flying adults, while larvicide targets larvae in water. Both are used by authorities, but removing water at home does the most.
How often is dengue fogging done?
That depends on the municipality and the outbreak. Ask your local health office for the schedule in your area.
Why is fogging in my area not happening?
Authorities usually spray when cases or mosquito counts are high. You can report standing water or cases to your local health office.
Can I do fumigation at home for dengue?
Do not use pesticides not made for indoor use. Choose repellents, mesh and water control, and read the pack on any product you use.
