Dengue Mosquito Bite Time: Daytime Protection Guide

Yes, the dengue mosquito bites in the daytime. WHO says the mosquitoes that spread dengue are active during the day, so protection that starts only at bedtime misses most of their bites. The Aedes mosquito is small, dark with white stripes on the legs, and likes shaded corners at home, school and work. Cover the legs, treat the ankles and use repellent in daylight, not just after sunset.

Daytime protection in short

  • Bite time: during the day, not only at night
  • Favourite targets: ankles, feet and the backs of knees
  • Clothes: light colours, long sleeves and trousers, socks
  • Repellent: apply on exposed skin, following the pack
  • Places: shaded corners, under desks, bathrooms, stairwells

At what time does the dengue mosquito bite?

During the day. That is the key fact that surprises people. Ordinary night mosquitoes make a whine in your ear while you sleep, so people connect mosquitoes with the evening. The dengue mosquito is quieter and works in daylight, so a bite at a school desk or in an office afternoon is common.

The exact peak hours can vary with weather and place, so treat the whole day as bite time, and not one fixed window.

How do I recognise it?

The Aedes mosquito is smaller than many common mosquitoes, has dark body with white stripes on the legs, and often comes low to bite the lower body. It also hides in dark, still, sheltered spots. A mosquito in a bright open field is less likely to be one than one in a cupboard corner. Do not rely on looks alone though, since many bites go unseen.

Is it indoors or outdoors?

Both. It breeds in small water containers near homes, so it is often found around houses, schools and offices. Rooms with bathrooms, stored water and shade are common spots. Keep an eye on spaces people do not clean often.

Why do ankles and feet get bitten most?

Insider tip: treat the lower half first

Under a desk, a dining table or a sofa, the shaded air near the floor is where the dengue mosquito tends to wait. Ankles, feet and the backs of the knees are easy targets. At school and office, wear socks and full length trousers, and apply repellent to the ankles and feet first. Check under your desk for a shaded corner and a rubbish bin with standing water.

What should children wear and do at school?

  • Full sleeve shirts and long trousers in light colours, especially in the monsoon and after.
  • Socks and closed shoes where school rules allow.
  • Ask the school whether water coolers, flower pots and drains are checked weekly.
  • Repellent on the child’s clothes and exposed skin as the pack states for their age; read our repellent guide for the safe choices.

If a child has fever, read dengue in children warning signs.

A daytime routine that fits real life

TimeWhat to do
MorningWear long, light clothes; apply repellent on exposed skin before leaving
At school or workKeep legs covered; check under the desk; report standing water
Afternoon at homeClose windows with mesh; empty water containers; use a fan near your feet
EveningReapply repellent as the pack says if you go out again
WeeklyDo the home water check from our Aedes breeding check

Is bite protection enough on its own?

No. Protection lowers the number of bites, and removing breeding water lowers the number of mosquitoes. Do both. Know the signs too: dengue symptoms and prevention lists them, and dengue warning signs in the critical phase explains the danger signals. More seasonal care is in the Barsaat and Flood Season hub.

Limits and when to see a doctor

Clothing and repellent reduce bites but cannot make them zero, and not every bite carries dengue. See a doctor the same day for fever with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint pain, vomiting, belly pain, bleeding gums or nose, or drowsiness, especially when the fever starts to fall. Do not use aspirin or ibuprofen for suspected dengue without a doctor’s advice. Emergency: 1122 in Pakistan, 112 in India.
