Excessive Burping (Dakar Aana): Air, Reflux or Infection?
Most excessive burping (dakar aana) is swallowed air, and the air came in through your own mouth: gulped chai, fizzy drinks, fast eating, talking while chewing. The pattern of the burps tells you far more than the number, and a few patterns, listed below, mean a doctor rather than another glass of saunf water.

A burp is simply the stomach letting out gas that came from above. Very little starts there. So “why do I keep burping?” is usually a question about how air is getting in, and sometimes about acid or an irritated stomach lining that makes you swallow more often.
Why do I keep burping? Four patterns to match
| Pattern | What it usually is | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Strings of burps while anxious, talking, or after gulping chai or cold drinks | Swallowed air (aerophagia), sometimes a habit of “pulling” air to burp | The air audit below |
| Sour or bitter burps after late meals, worse lying down, with heartburn | Reflux | The two-hour rule for a week |
| Rotten-egg burps with loose stools, cramps, after a wedding feast | A gut infection or a very heavy, fatty meal | Fluids, light food, watch for red flags |
| Burping with upper-belly burning pain that wakes you or eases with food | Possible ulcer or H. pylori infection | See a doctor for a test |
Air: the most common reason by far
Every swallow takes a little air down with it. Gulping, sipping hot chai from a saucer with a slurp, drinking through a straw, chewing gum, smoking, loose dentures and talking while eating all add more. Anxiety adds a lot, because tense people swallow often without noticing. Some people get into a loop: they feel pressure, try to burp, pull air into the gullet, and burp it straight back out. It feels like relief. It isn’t.
Reflux: the sour burp
Sour means acid. If burps bring up a sour or bitter taste, especially at night after lying down, the valve at the top of the stomach is letting acid and gas up. Big late dinners, fried food, lying down within an hour of eating and a tight waistband all make it worse. Excessive burping at night after lying down is usually this.
The egg-smell burp
Sulphur-smelling burps often come with a gut infection or after a meal heavy in protein and fat, the classic mutton, biryani and ghee-laden wedding week. With loose motions and cramps, think infection first. Keep up fluids and watch the red flags below.
Burping with upper-belly pain
Burning pain in the upper middle belly that wakes you at night, or that eases when you eat and then returns, can mean a stomach ulcer or H. pylori, a bacterium that’s very common in Pakistan and India. It’s diagnosed with a breath, stool or blood test and managed with a doctor’s prescription. No nuskha removes it.
The home checks: find your own pattern in a week
1. The straw-and-gum audit
- For one day, count your air sources: straws, gum, fizzy drinks, cigarettes, sips of very hot chai, meals eaten in under 10 minutes, talking while chewing.
- Cut them for 7 days. No fizzy drinks or straws, no gum, smaller cups of chai sipped slowly, meals stretched to 20 minutes with the phone away.
- Check dentures if you wear them. Loose ones make you swallow air.
- Notice the urge to burp and try not to force one out. Breathe out slowly through the mouth instead.
2. The two-hour rule
For one week, stop all food and chai two hours before lying down. Have a smaller dinner and take a 10 to 15 minute walk after it. If the night burping and sour taste settle, reflux was the driver.
3. Burp or hiccup?
A burp releases gas from the stomach and brings sound and sometimes taste. A hiccup is a sudden jerk of the diaphragm that snaps the vocal cords shut with a “hic”, and nothing comes up. They need different fixes, so it helps to name the right one.
These checks prove whether a habit or meal timing is behind it. They don’t rule out an ulcer or H. pylori. If pain is part of the picture, the test beats the experiment.
The stomach makes little gas of its own. Most burps went in through the mouth.
What helps today
- Eat more slowly and put the spoon down between bites
- Drink chai and water in smaller cups, sipped, not gulped
- Drop fizzy drinks, including sweet “digestive” sodas
- Walk for 10 to 15 minutes after dinner rather than lying down
- Stop at comfortably full. The belch rule for portions is a handy cue
- Saunf after meals is a pleasant habit, not a fix. Our piece on bloating and gas after meals covers saunf, ajwain and hing honestly
What not to do
- Baking soda in water as a habit. It gives a quick burp but adds a big salt load, which is a problem for blood pressure, the heart and the kidneys, and it can make reflux rebound.
- Antacid packets every day without a diagnosis. Short-term use is fine; daily use for weeks can hide an ulcer that needs proper care. Ask a pharmacist, then a doctor if you need them for more than two weeks.
- “Pait saaf” powders and stomach-cleanse churans. Many are laxatives in disguise. See our verdicts on herbal stomach-cleanse powders.
Can burping be a sign of something serious?
Usually no. But a few combinations need a doctor, and one needs an ambulance.
Heart pain is often blamed on gas, especially in women, older people and those with diabetes. Pressure or heaviness in the chest when you walk or climb stairs, with sweating, breathlessness or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, is not a burp waiting to come out. Read quiet heart attack signs and call emergency services rather than trying a digestive.
Emergency, go now: vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, black tarry stool, chest pressure or pain on exertion or with sweating and breathlessness, or severe belly pain that won’t settle. See a doctor within days: weight loss you didn’t try for, pain that wakes you at night, trouble swallowing or food sticking, repeated vomiting, anaemia, or new burping and indigestion that starts after age 50. People on blood thinners or regular painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin should mention stomach pain early. Don’t stop or start any medicine on your own; ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Myth: burping means gas is “stuck” and must be forced out
People often press their belly, gulp air or drink soda to “get the burp out”. It feels logical, but forcing burps usually means swallowing more air first. The pressure feeling in many cases is a sensitive stomach or anxiety, not trapped gas. Slow breathing and not forcing it work better than a fizzy drink.
Desi kitchens pass round saunf and mishri after meals, add ajwain and hing to heavy daals, and serve ginger with rich food. In Unani tradition, digestives (jawarish) were taken after meals for a “weak” stomach. As food habits these are fine. They’re tradition, and they don’t replace a test when there’s pain or bleeding.
Did you know?
- The stomach produces very little gas on its own; most burped gas is swallowed air.
- H. pylori is among the most common infections in the world and many people carry it without symptoms.
- Burps from fizzy drinks are mostly carbon dioxide from the drink itself.

Excessive burping: questions people search
What causes burping so much?
Most often from swallowing air: eating fast, gulping chai or fizzy drinks, gum, straws, smoking or anxiety. Reflux and heavy fatty meals come next. If there’s pain, weight loss or black stool, see a doctor.
What causes excessive burping at night after lying down?
Usually reflux, where acid and gas rise when you’re flat soon after dinner. Stop eating two hours before bed, have a lighter dinner and raise the head end of the bed a little. See a doctor if it continues for weeks.
Can burping be a sign of something serious?
Rarely, but yes when it comes with vomiting blood, black stool, weight loss, trouble swallowing, pain that wakes you, or chest pressure on exertion. Those need a doctor, and chest pressure or blood needs emergency care.
Why is a burp sour?
Stomach acid is coming up with the gas, which is reflux. Late, large, fried meals and lying down soon after eating are the usual triggers. Frequent sour burps for weeks deserve a doctor visit.
What does an egg-smelling burp mean?
Sulphur-smelling burps often follow a gut infection or a heavy protein and fat meal. With diarrhoea and cramps, drink ORS and watch for blood, high fever or dehydration, which need a doctor.
Is constant burping a sign of H. pylori?
It can be one feature, usually with burning upper-belly pain, bloating or feeling full fast. Burping alone doesn’t prove it. A doctor can arrange a breath, stool or blood test.
Is burping with chest pain gas or the heart?
You can’t tell for certain at home. Chest pressure with exertion, sweating, breathlessness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw should be treated as a possible heart problem and needs emergency care.
What is a home remedy for burping and bloating?
Slow eating, smaller cups, no fizzy drinks, a walk after dinner and not lying down for two hours. Saunf or ajwain after meals are pleasant food habits. None replaces a doctor when there’s pain or bleeding.
Is baking soda safe for burping?
Not as a habit. It adds a lot of sodium, which matters for blood pressure, heart and kidneys, and it can make acid rebound. Ask a pharmacist for a suitable antacid for occasional use.
Why does anxiety cause burping?
Anxious people swallow air more often and may breathe through the mouth. The air collects in the stomach and comes back up. Slow breathing through the nose and not forcing burps help break the cycle.
Why do babies burp so much?
Babies swallow air while feeding, especially from a bottle or a fast flow. Burping them upright over the shoulder is normal. See a doctor if a baby vomits forcefully, has blood in vomit or stool, or isn’t gaining weight.
