Viral Hack Checked: Drying Hair in a T-Shirt Instead of a Towel?

Verdict: Works, modestly. Drying hair in a soft cotton T-shirt does cause less frizz and fewer snapped ends than rubbing it hard with a rough towel, but most of the benefit comes from pressing the water out instead of scrubbing, so a soft towel used gently does nearly as well.

Quick facts

  • The claim: swap your towel for an old T-shirt and frizz disappears, curls hold and hair stops breaking.
  • What’s true: smooth, soft cotton has less grab than towel loops, and it soaks up less, so hair isn’t dried to straw.
  • What’s overblown: it won’t stop hair fall and it won’t give curls to straight hair.
  • Best for: curly, wavy, frizz-prone, coloured or long hair.
  • Cost: nothing, if an old cotton tee is lying in the cupboard.

You step out of the shower, flip your head over and rub. Hard. Like drying a dog. It’s the way most of us were taught, and it’s the bit the T-shirt hack is really fighting against. Does drying hair in a T-shirt instead of a towel actually help? Yes. A bit. It’s one of the few viral hair hacks that holds up when you look at how hair is actually built, which is more than can be said for most of the tricks that go round every summer with dramatic before-and-after photos.

Why wet hair is fragile

Each hair is covered in tiny overlapping scales, the cuticle, a bit like roof tiles. When hair is wet it swells, softens and stretches more easily, and the scales lift slightly at their edges, so rough rubbing at this stage catches those lifted edges, roughs them up and can snap weak strands, especially at the dry, older ends. Rough scales scatter light and stick out in all directions. That’s frizz.

So the aim is simple. Get water out without scraping.

That’s it.

Look at the last row. Surprising? The fabric helps, but the way you handle the hair matters more. A soft towel pressed gently gives results close to a T-shirt, while a T-shirt rubbed hard still causes frizz, because rubbing is the real problem, and the viral videos don’t always make that clear.

Blot, don’t rub: the technique does most of the work, the fabric does the rest.

Myth: a T-shirt wrap stops hair fall

No. Hair that falls from the root with a small white bulb on the end came out because of the growth cycle, a health trigger or genes, not because of the towel. What gentle drying reduces is breakage, the short snapped pieces without a bulb. Fewer snapped bits on the bathroom floor can look like “less hair fall”, which is where this claim comes from. If you’re losing a lot from the root, look for the cause instead.

Did you know? A strand of hair can stretch noticeably more when wet than when dry before it snaps, which is exactly why wet hair tolerates rough handling so badly.

How to dry hair with a T-shirt

  1. Squeeze first: in the shower, gently squeeze water down the lengths with your hands, 3 or 4 times.
  2. Choose the shirt: a clean, soft 100% cotton T-shirt, washed without fabric softener if your scalp is sensitive. No prints on the part that touches hair.
  3. Press, don’t rub: scrunch sections of hair upwards into the fabric (curly hair) or press the shirt along the lengths (straight hair) for 10 to 20 seconds each.
  4. Or wrap (“plop”): lay the shirt flat, flip hair onto it, wrap the sides round and tie the sleeves at the front. Keep it on for 10 to 20 minutes, not hours.
  5. Finish: let it air-dry or use a dryer on cool or low heat, 15 cm away.
  6. Wash the shirt after 2 or 3 uses, and let it dry fully in between.

Who gains most, and who barely will

Curly and wavy hair benefit the most, because curls clump into neat ringlets when they aren’t roughed apart, and a curl that has been pressed rather than scrubbed dries with its shape intact instead of puffing out into the halo of frizz that so many people with curly hair have learned to hate. Big difference. Long hair and colour-treated hair gain too, since their ends are older and more fragile. Short, straight, thick hair? Less so. You’ll notice little, and a normal towel pressed gently is fine.

A microfibre hair towel works on the same idea and dries faster than cotton, which is handy on busy school mornings when there’s no time to let long hair air-dry for an hour and the hair dryer is already fighting for the one plug point in the bedroom. Nice, but optional.

A one-week test

For 3 washes, dry one side of your head with the T-shirt and the other with your usual towel, both by pressing. Then try one wash where you rub with the towel. Compare frizz and the snapped bits in your comb. You’ll see for yourself whether it’s the fabric or the rubbing.

Worth knowing first

Keep a damp wrap to 20 minutes or so; a scalp that stays wet under cloth for hours can itch and may encourage dandruff and fungal problems, especially in humid weather. Use a clean shirt each time you have a scalp problem, and don’t share it. If you have scalp redness, scaling, pus, painful spots or patchy hair loss, see a doctor rather than changing fabrics; in children, patchy loss is often scalp ringworm. Hair fall in clumps or with tiredness, weight change or irregular periods also needs a doctor’s visit.

T-shirt drying: common questions

Is it better to dry your hair with a T-shirt or a towel?

A soft T-shirt is slightly better for frizz and breakage, especially for curly or long hair. The bigger win is pressing instead of rubbing, whichever you use.

Does T-shirt drying reduce frizz?

Yes, modestly. The smooth knit roughs up the cuticle less than towel loops do.

How long should I keep my hair wrapped in a T-shirt?

About 10 to 20 minutes. Longer keeps the scalp damp without much extra benefit.

Can I sleep with my hair in a T-shirt?

It’s better not to sleep with damp hair wrapped up, since the scalp stays wet for hours. Dry it mostly first.

Is a microfibre towel better than a T-shirt?

It dries faster and is similarly gentle. Either works; the T-shirt is free.

Does T-shirt drying help hair fall?

It reduces breakage, not hair fall from the root. Root shedding needs its cause found.

What kind of T-shirt is best for drying hair?

A soft, clean, 100% cotton tee with no print on the part that touches your hair. Old and well-washed is ideal.

Is T-shirt drying good for straight hair?

It’s fine, but straight, thick hair usually shows little difference. Gentle towel pressing works just as well.

How do I plop curly hair with a T-shirt?

Lay the shirt flat, flip your head so the curls pile onto it, wrap the sides around your head and tie the sleeves. Remove after 10 to 20 minutes.
