Detox Diets and Juice Cleanses: What They Really Remove

You already own two of the finest filtration organs in the natural world, and they came fitted as standard. Your liver and kidneys clear waste every hour of every day, without a three-day juice package, a sachet of green powder or a bottle of lemon juice and olive oil taken at bedtime.

The question nobody selling a cleanse will answer

Ask it directly. Which toxin, specifically, is being removed? By what measurable amount? Compared against what?

There is never an answer. The marketing runs entirely on a vague feeling of internal dirtiness, which is a very old and very effective thing to sell against. “Toxins” stays undefined on purpose, because a named substance could be measured, and a measurement could be checked.

What your body actually does with waste is well understood and rather impressive. The liver chemically modifies substances so they can be excreted. The kidneys filter blood continuously and send waste out in urine. The gut moves what was never absorbed straight through. The lungs clear volatile compounds with every breath. Skin does a small share. None of this waits for a juice.

Quick facts

  • What cleanses remove: water, gut contents, and money
  • What they do not remove: body fat, in any meaningful amount, over three days
  • Typical juice day: 800 to 1,200 kcal, almost all sugar, almost no protein
  • Real risks: laxative dependence, electrolyte disturbance, hypos on diabetes medicine, kidney stones from high oxalate juices, dangerous interactions with grapefruit
  • The “liver flush” stones: soap-like clumps formed from the oil and juice themselves, not gallstones
  • What actually helps the liver: less alcohol, less sugar, steady weight loss, vaccination and treatment for hepatitis, sleep

Why the scale drops, and why it is not fat

Three days of juice will move the number, and people take that as proof. Here is what left.

Glycogen and its water go first. Your muscles and liver store carbohydrate, and each gram of it holds roughly three grams of water. Cut real food and 2 to 3 kg can leave in a few days, all of it water. Gut contents go next, especially if the plan includes a laxative tea or salt water flush, which many do. And that is essentially the whole trick. Eat one normal meal of roti and salan and much of it returns within a day, which is the point at which people declare that they “ruined it”.

Could you lose a little fat in three days on 900 kcal? Yes, a few hundred grams. That is the honest size of it, and you could have had the same by eating properly and walking, without the headache. The full arithmetic is in how much weight you can really lose in 30 days.

Nobody sells a cleanse that promises what it actually delivers: three days without dinner.

The specific risks, one by one

Laxatives and “colon cleansing”

Many detox teas contain senna or similar stimulant laxatives, often without saying so clearly on the label. Used repeatedly they can cause cramping, dehydration, and low potassium, and the bowel can become sluggish and reliant on them. Low potassium matters most for people on heart medicines or diuretics, where it can affect heart rhythm. Colonic irrigation adds a risk of bowel perforation and infection, and it is not a wellness procedure. If your actual problem is constipation, treat that properly: fibre, fluids, movement, and isabgol if needed, as covered in our qabz guide.

The lemon juice and olive oil “liver flush”

This one deserves naming plainly. The plan involves drinking a large quantity of olive oil with citrus juice, sometimes with epsom salts, and then producing greenish soft lumps in the stool which are presented as expelled gallstones. Analyses of those lumps have found them to be saponified material, essentially a soap formed from the oil and the juice reacting in the gut. Real gallstones are hard and mineral. On top of that, a big slug of oil makes the gallbladder contract hard, and if you genuinely do have stones, that is how one gets stuck in a duct. That is a hospital matter rather than a kitchen one. Severe pain that will not ease, fever and shivering, or yellowing of the eyes and skin mean going in the same day.

Juice-only days and your kidneys

Heavy intake of certain juices, particularly those high in oxalate, has been linked to kidney injury and stone formation in susceptible people. Anyone with existing kidney disease should stay well away. Juices also strip the fibre out of fruit, so you get the sugar fast and the fullness never.

Blood sugar and medicine interactions

On insulin or a sulfonylurea tablet, a day of juice with no protein at all is a genuine hypo risk, and an unstable blood sugar day in general. Grapefruit and pomelo interfere with how the body handles a long list of prescription medicines, including some for blood pressure, cholesterol and heart rhythm, and that interaction is serious rather than theoretical. Check with a pharmacist before drinking litres of anything new if you take regular medicine.

Hidden ingredients in slimming products

Products sold as herbal detox or slimming aids have repeatedly been found to contain undeclared pharmaceutical drugs, including banned appetite suppressants and diuretics. You cannot tell by looking. This is covered in more detail in slimming teas and fat burner pills, and it is the single strongest reason not to buy a cleanse kit from an unregulated seller.

Do not attempt a cleanse if

Skip detox plans entirely if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease or a bowel condition, if you take diuretics, blood pressure medicine, lithium, warfarin or any medicine with a narrow safe range, if you have ever been treated for an eating disorder, or if you are older and cannot afford to lose muscle. Never give one to a child or teenager. Get medical help the same day for severe abdominal pain especially in the upper right side, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine with pale stools, vomiting that will not stop, fainting, palpitations, or signs of a hypo such as shaking, sweating and confusion. Persistent tiredness, itching or unexplained weight loss needs a diagnosis, not a juice: see when to see a doctor about weight.

The traditional view, read carefully

Unani and Ayurvedic systems do have cleansing concepts, and they are far more specific and far more supervised than a supermarket juice box. Traditional purification procedures were prescribed individually, seasonally, with preparation and aftercare, by practitioners who knew the person. Household practice was gentler still: lighter food for a few days, warm simple khichdi, rest, early nights. That is a reasonable idea. Selling a stranger a bottle and a promise is not the same thing, and it is fair to say so.

What to do instead, which is genuinely less interesting

  1. Drink water, plainly. Roughly 8 to 10 glasses a day for most adults, more in heat. This supports your kidneys doing what they already do. It does not flush anything extra.
  2. Cut liquid sugar first. Cold drinks, packaged juices, and sweet chai. One level teaspoon per cup at most, or none. This single change is worth more than every cleanse ever sold.
  3. Eat 400 g or more of vegetables and fruit a day, whole rather than juiced, so the fibre comes with it.
  4. Put protein at every meal. A katori of daal, 2 eggs, a cup of dahi, or about 100 g cooked chicken. This is what a juice cleanse most conspicuously lacks.
  5. If you want a lighter few days, eat lightly rather than not at all. Moong dal khichdi, a big sabzi, dahi, fruit, and chaas or plain water to drink. You will feel the way people hope a cleanse will make them feel, because most of that feeling comes from stopping fried food and sugar for a few days.
  6. Swap the drink, not your dinner. If you enjoy jeera water, saunf water or green tea, have them. They are pleasant, they are traditional, and they are low calorie alternatives to a sugary drink. That is the real benefit, and it is a genuine one. None of them removes toxins or burns fat, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling.
  7. Take a quarter of an hour on your feet after the two heaviest meals of the day, stopping if you get chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.
  8. Sleep 7 to 8 hours. Unglamorous, free, and it does more for how you feel in the morning than any sachet.

If you actually want to be kind to your liver, the list is short and boring: drink less alcohol or none, keep your weight in a healthy range, treat and vaccinate against hepatitis where relevant, be careful with paracetamol doses, and be wary of unlabelled herbal supplements, some of which have caused genuine liver injury. Steady weight loss of roughly half a kilo to a kilo a week does more for a fatty liver than any product on a shop shelf.

The sane, slow version of all of this is what the rest of Desi Weight Loss is for, starting with portions rather than bans, as our piece on no rice, no roti, no sugar sets out.

Do detox drinks remove toxins from the body?

No. Your liver, kidneys, gut and lungs handle waste continuously, and no drink measurably improves on that. Low calorie drinks are useful as swaps for sugary ones, which is a real but much smaller claim.

Why do I feel lighter and clearer during a cleanse?

Usually because you have stopped fried food, sugar and late heavy dinners for a few days, and you are drinking more water. You can have all of that while still eating actual meals.

Are the green stones from a liver flush real gallstones?

Analyses have found them to be soap-like material formed from the oil and citrus juice in the gut. Real gallstones are hard. If you suspect gallstones, that is an ultrasound and a doctor, not a kitchen procedure.

Is a one-day juice fast harmful?

For a healthy adult, probably not harmful, but also not useful. For anyone on diabetes medicine, with kidney disease, pregnant, breastfeeding, or under eighteen, skip it.

What about apple cider vinegar for detox?

It does not detox anything, and undiluted it can damage tooth enamel and irritate the throat. Our page on sirka and apple cider vinegar covers sensible kitchen use.

Can I do a cleanse to prepare for a wedding?

You would lose water, feel tired in your photographs, and regain it within days. Two months of measured portions and daily walking gets you an actual change. Shaadi season eating has the practical version.

Are detox teas safe with my blood pressure medicine?

Not necessarily. Many contain laxatives or diuretic herbs that can lower potassium or add to your medicine’s effects. Ask your pharmacist before taking any of them alongside prescription medicine.

My skin cleared up during a cleanse. Was that the detox?

More likely the lack of fried food, more water and more sleep. Those are worth keeping. The juice is not what did it. See pimples and oily skin for the skin-specific picture.
