Dark Elbows, Knees and Underarms: Gentle Ubtan and Honest Advice
Every wedding season someone rubs half a lemon on their elbows, sits in the courtyard sun for an hour to “let it work”, and wakes up with red, stinging skin that later turns darker than before. The lemon wasn’t the magic. It was the burn.
Lemon, lime and other citrus juices on skin followed by sunlight can cause a chemical-plus-sun reaction called phytophotodermatitis. It shows up hours or a day later as redness, burning, sometimes blisters, then patchy brown marks that can last months. If you use citrus on skin at all, wash it off thoroughly and keep that skin out of the sun for the rest of the day. Better still, skip it.
Quick facts
- Most common cause: friction, pressure, dryness and thicker skin.
- Underarms: shaving, waxing, tight clothes and deodorant irritation add to it.
- Realistic goal: smoother, softer, slightly more even skin over 2 to 3 months, not a different colour.
- Get checked: sudden darkening, or velvety, thickened patches.

Why these spots darken
Elbows and knees are where you lean, kneel and rest. The skin there thickens to protect itself and gets dry and rough, and rough skin looks darker because it scatters light and holds on to dead cells. In brown skin, any repeated irritation also nudges pigment cells to make more melanin. That’s normal biology, not dirt.
Underarms have extra stresses. Razor friction, hair removal creams, waxing, tight blouses and kurtas, sweat, and fragranced deodorants all irritate. Irritation, over months, shows up as darkening.
A fair point to make plainly: some of this is just your natural skin tone in folds and joints. It’s worth deciding what you want before you start. Softer and smoother? Very doable. A shade lighter than your arms? That’s a promise no ubtan can keep.
Common causes at a glance
| Cause | How it looks | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Friction and leaning | Rough, dry, ash-dark | Moisturise, cushion |
| Shaving or waxing | Dark, bumpy, stubble shadow | Gentler hair removal |
| Deodorant reaction | Itchy, red then dark | Switch to fragrance-free |
| Velvety thick patches | Soft, raised, lined texture | See a doctor |
A gentle besan ubtan
Ubtan is the paste every bride in the subcontinent knows. Used gently, it’s a mild physical exfoliant: besan grains lift dead skin, dahi softens, and the ritual gets you massaging a spot you usually ignore. It’s the gentleness that counts.
- In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons (about 15 g) of fine besan with a small pinch of haldi, no more than ⅛ teaspoon. More turmeric stains skin and clothes yellow.
- Add 1 tablespoon of plain dahi or full-fat milk, then rose water a teaspoon at a time (usually 2 to 3 teaspoons) until you have a thick, spreadable paste. Enough for both elbows and knees.
- Patch test a dab on the inner arm and wait 24 hours.
- Apply a layer to clean, slightly damp elbows or knees.
- Leave 10 minutes, just until it starts to set.
- Wet your fingers and rub off in slow circles with light pressure for 1 to 2 minutes. No scrubbing hard.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry and moisturise straight away.
Twice a week is enough; daily scrubbing irritates and can darken skin further. Make it fresh each time. Besan goes stale and bitter and can attract weevils, so store it airtight and check for a musty smell. Our besan and haldi ubtan guide has a face version, and the haldi guide explains how to spot adulterated turmeric powder, which sometimes contains colouring.
For underarms, go softer
Skip ubtan on underarms for 48 hours after shaving, waxing or using hair removal cream. The skin is micro-scratched then, and even besan will sting. When it’s calm, use only the dahi and besan with no haldi, leave for 5 minutes, and rinse, don’t rub. Once a week is plenty.
Honestly, the bigger wins under the arms are behavioural. Use a fresh, sharp razor with a gel, shaving in the direction of hair growth, or switch to trimming. Let the skin breathe in loose cotton. Try a fragrance-free deodorant for a month and see if the itching and shadow ease.
Ubtan comes from long household custom, especially the haldi and mayun ceremonies before a wedding, when women gather to rub a paste of besan, haldi, oil and sometimes sandalwood or rose petals onto the bride’s skin. In Ayurveda, ubtan (from the Sanskrit utsadana) was part of a daily self-care routine alongside oil massage. Unani practice used pastes of barley or chickpea flour for cleansing and softening skin. None of these traditions promised a change in skin colour as a medical outcome; they were about cleansing, softness and ritual.
The nightly moisture habit
This is less glamorous than an ubtan and does more. Dry, thick skin looks darker. Soft, hydrated skin reflects light better.
- After a bath, while skin is still damp, rub 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, til oil or a plain moisturiser into each elbow and knee for 30 seconds.
- Look for a moisturiser containing urea or lactic acid if your skin is very rough; these gently soften thickened skin. Start every other night.
- Use a folded cushion when leaning on desks, and a mat or cushion when kneeling for floor work or prayer.
- Outdoors, apply sunscreen to elbows and knees if they’re exposed. Sun deepens any darkening.
Give it 8 to 12 weeks. Take a photo in the same light on day one; it’s the only honest way to judge.
Myths to put down
“Baking soda scrub lightens underarms.” It’s strongly alkaline, irritates skin and can make darkening worse.
“Toothpaste lightens dark knees.” It’s not made for skin. It can burn and cause a rash.
“Potato juice bleaches.” It’s gentle and harmless for most people, but expect a cool, pleasant feeling rather than a colour change.
“Darker underarms mean poor hygiene.” No. Clean people have darker underarms. Scrubbing harder only irritates them.
“Whitening creams from the market are safe.” Some unregulated creams contain strong steroids or mercury, which can thin skin and cause real harm. Avoid unlabelled or imported “fairness” creams.
When darkening needs a doctor
This is the most important part of this guide. Most elbow and knee darkening is harmless. Some patterns are the body signalling something that deserves a proper check.
Velvety, soft, thickened dark patches, often on the back of the neck, underarms, groin or under the breasts, with skin that feels a bit like suede and sometimes small skin tags nearby, can be acanthosis nigricans. It’s often linked to insulin resistance, which is a common step before type 2 diabetes, and to PCOS in women, weight gain, and certain medicines. It isn’t dangerous in itself, but it’s a reason to get your blood sugar checked. Scrubbing won’t shift it.
Book a visit for velvety or thickened dark patches, especially around the neck and underarms; darkening that appears suddenly or spreads quickly over weeks; darkening with unexplained weight loss, tiredness, dizziness, salt craving or darkened gums; dark patches with irregular periods, acne or extra facial hair; itching, pain, cracking or a rash; or darkening that started with a new medicine. Ask specifically for a blood sugar test. If you’re pregnant, some darkening of skin is common (you may notice it on underarms and the tummy line), but mention it, and avoid new strong skincare products. If you’re taking medicines for diabetes, blood thinners or hormone medicines, ask before trying any lightening product. Children with dark velvety neck patches should be checked by a paediatrician rather than scrubbed.
Winter roughness often travels together; the soak in cracked heels care and the sweat-and-friction tips in garmi dane remedies both help underarms and joints stay calmer. More household guides live in Desi Remedies.
How long before an ubtan shows results?
If you notice softer skin, it’s usually within 2 weeks. Any evening out of tone is gradual, over 2 to 3 months, and may be subtle.
Can I use lemon at night then?
Even at night, leftover juice can react with morning sun if not washed off, and citrus stings irritated skin. The gentler ubtan does the same job without the risk.
Is aloe vera gel useful?
Fresh or plain gel is soothing and mild for most people. Patch test first, as some react to the yellow sap under the leaf skin.
Do dark knees mean diabetes?
Ordinary rough, dark knees don’t. Velvety, thickened patches on the neck or underarms are the ones to get tested for.
Can laser or peels help?
A dermatologist can advise on medical options once the cause is known. Don’t book salon peels for an undiagnosed patch.
Does shaving make underarms darker?
It can. Razor friction, hair removal creams and waxing irritate the skin, and repeated irritation shows up as darkening in brown skin over months. A fresh sharp razor with gel, shaving in the direction of hair growth, or trimming instead can help.
Does baking soda lighten dark underarms?
No. Baking soda is strongly alkaline, irritates skin and can make darkening worse. Toothpaste is another popular trick that can burn and cause a rash.
Are fairness creams from the market safe for dark areas?
Some unregulated or unlabelled creams contain strong steroids or mercury, which can thin skin and cause real harm. Avoid unlabelled or imported fairness creams, and ask a dermatologist before using any lightening product.
