Coffee vs Chai for Heart and Sleep: The Real Caffeine Maths

A cup of chai has less caffeine than a cup of coffee, but most people drinking chai are drinking four or five cups a day, not one. That single fact matters more than the headline comparisons ever do.

The comparison people actually need is not “which drink has more caffeine per cup”, it is “how much am I drinking across the whole day”. Someone on five cups of chai and someone on two cups of coffee often land in a similar total caffeine range, somewhere around 200 mg, which is a moderate, ordinary amount for most healthy adults.

What this means for your heart

For most healthy adults without a diagnosed heart rhythm problem, moderate caffeine intake from either drink is not something to be anxious about. It is one of the more heavily studied compounds in food science, and the consistent finding at ordinary intakes is neutral to mildly favourable, not alarming. Where caution genuinely applies is with existing arrhythmia, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a doctor’s specific instruction to limit caffeine, in which case the total daily amount matters far more than whether it came from a cup of chai or a cup of coffee.

Where the anxiety comparison actually comes from

Coffee gets blamed for jitteriness more often than chai, and the reason is mostly dose and speed rather than the drink itself. A concentrated cup of coffee delivers 80 to 100 mg quickly in one go, which some people feel as a noticeable jolt, while chai’s caffeine arrives in smaller, more spread out doses across the day. Someone genuinely sensitive to caffeine can feel the same jittery, anxious edge from either drink if the total daily amount climbs high enough, it is simply easier to hit that threshold in two cups of coffee than in two cups of chai.

What this means for sleep

Caffeine has a half-life of roughly five to six hours in most adults, meaning half of a 4 pm cup is still active in your system at 10 pm. This is true regardless of whether it came from chai or coffee. The difference in practice is that coffee tends to be drunk in one or two concentrated doses, while chai is sipped across the day in smaller amounts, which spreads the sleep-disrupting window differently rather than removing it.

A cut-off schedule that actually works

  1. Work out your target sleep time. For most people that is around 10.30 to 11.30 pm.
  2. Subtract 6 hours for your true caffeine cut-off, meaning your last cup, chai or coffee, by roughly 4.30 to 5.30 pm.
  3. If you genuinely need something warm after that, switch to plain doodh, sulaimani without the black tea base, or a caffeine-free herbal option.
  4. Cap total cups at 4 to 5 for chai or 2 to 3 for coffee across the day, adjusting down if you notice jitteriness, a racing heart, or trouble falling asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed.
The traditional view

In Unani medicine, tea and coffee are both generally considered to carry a warming, drying temperament, and traditional advice often cautioned against excess for people with a naturally hot, dry constitution or during summer months, described here as tradition rather than established fact. Ayurveda takes a broadly similar caution toward excess caffeine as aggravating pitta and vata depending on the individual. Neither system suggests avoiding either drink entirely, only moderation matched to the season and the person, which is not far from the sensible modern advice either.

When to ask a doctor

If you have a diagnosed heart arrhythmia, uncontrolled high blood pressure, anxiety that worsens with stimulants, or are pregnant, ask a doctor for a specific caffeine limit rather than following a general guideline, since pregnancy caffeine limits are commonly set lower than the general adult range and should come from your own doctor. Sudden heart palpitations, chest pain, or a racing heart after a normal cup that has never happened before warrants medical attention, not just cutting back next time.

Is green tea a genuinely lower-caffeine swap?
