Is Tomato a Fruit or Vegetable? Banana Is a Berry, and More Facts

To a botanist, a banana (kela) is a berry, a strawberry isn’t, and a tomato (tamatar), bhindi, karela and cucumber are all fruits. The rule is simple: if it grew from a flower and holds the seeds, it’s a fruit. “Vegetable” is a kitchen word, not a science word. Below are the checkable surprises, from a US Supreme Court case about tomatoes to the cashew’s poisonous shell, and a practical tip for your shopping bag with each one.

What makes something a fruit, botanically speaking

A flower has a tiny swollen part at its base called the ovary. After pollination, the ovary grows into the fruit and the eggs inside become seeds. That’s it. Sweetness has nothing to do with it.

So a fruit is the plant’s seed package. Vegetables are the other parts we eat: leaves (palak, methi), stems (celery), roots (gajar, mooli), tubers (aloo) and flower buds (gobhi). Cooks sort by taste instead: sweet goes in dessert, savoury goes in the salan. Both systems are right for their own job.

Fruit by botany, vegetable in the kitchen

  • Tomato, baingan, shimla mirch, hari mirch: berries, botanically.
  • Bhindi, karela, lauki, tinda, kheera: fruits.
  • Peas and beans in the pod: the pod is the fruit; peas are seeds.
  • Aloo, pyaz, gajar, palak, gobhi: true vegetables (tuber, bulb, root, leaf, flower bud).

Is tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

Botanically, a tomato is a fruit, and more precisely a berry. Legally, in the United States, it’s a vegetable. In 1893 the US Supreme Court decided a case called Nix v. Hedden, about import taxes. Vegetables were taxed and fruits weren’t, so an importer argued tomatoes were fruit. The court agreed with the botany but ruled that people cook and eat tomatoes as vegetables, so they’d be taxed as vegetables.

Another surprise: tomatoes aren’t native to South Asia at all. They come from western South America and were first farmed in Mexico. They reached the subcontinent through European traders and became a daily kitchen staple only in the last couple of centuries. The same is true of hari mirch and aloo, which also came from the Americas. Imagine a salan without all three.

The tip: keep ripe tomatoes on the counter, stem side down, and eat them within a few days. The fridge dulls their flavour and makes the flesh mealy. Fridge only the ones you won’t use in time, and let them warm up before eating. Tomato and aloo are cousins, so the same family rule applies: cut away green parts on a potato and throw out potatoes that are very green or sprouting heavily, because they contain solanine, which can upset the stomach.

A banana plant is not a tree. It’s the world’s biggest herb, with a “trunk” made of rolled-up leaves.

Why a banana is a berry (and a strawberry isn’t)

A botanical berry grows from one flower with one ovary, and has seeds inside soft flesh. Bananas, tomatoes, grapes, baingan and even chillies fit. The tiny black specks in the middle of a banana are what’s left of its seeds. Wild bananas are full of hard seeds; the ones we eat were selected long ago because they barely make any.

A strawberry grows from a flower whose base swells up, and the “seeds” on the outside are each a tiny separate fruit with a seed inside. So strawberry is an “accessory fruit”, not a berry.

The banana plant is a giant herb. It has no wood. The “trunk” is a pseudostem, a tight roll of leaf bases. After it fruits once, that stem dies, and new shoots from the base take over. Farmers plant those shoots, which makes nearly every banana in a variety a clone of the one before.

The tip: brown speckles on a banana mean the starch has turned to sugar. Great for shakes and babies’ mash, sweeter than you want if you’re watching sugar. A greener banana has more resistant starch and tastes less sweet. Hang bananas or keep them apart from other fruit, since they give off ethylene (the ripening gas). More surprising fruit facts, each with a buying tip

A pineapple is many fruits fused together

Each “eye” on a pineapple was once a separate flower. The flowers’ fruits fused around a central stalk into one “multiple fruit”. Tip: a pineapple doesn’t get sweeter after it’s picked; it only softens. Choose one that smells sweet at the base and feels heavy.

Cashews grow under a fruit, inside a toxic shell

The cashew nut hangs below a juicy, pear-shaped “cashew apple”. The shell holds a caustic oil related to the irritant in poison ivy. That’s why cashews sold as “raw” have in fact been heat-processed to remove it. Tip: never try to crack fresh cashews from a tree at home.

Peanuts aren’t nuts

A peanut is a legume, a relative of beans and chana, and its pods grow underground. Tip: a peanut allergy and a tree-nut allergy are different, and many people have one without the other. Only an allergist can tell you which you can eat safely.

Almonds are the seed of a peach cousin

The almond tree is in the rose family with peaches and apricots. We eat the seed of its fruit and throw away the fuzzy green hull. Tip: bitter almonds are a different, toxic type. Never eat an almond that tastes clearly bitter.

The heat of a chilli is mostly in the white ribs

Capsaicin, the burning compound, is made mainly in the pale ribs (the placenta) that hold the seeds. The seeds get hot because they touch the ribs. Tip: scrape out the ribs, not just the seeds, for a milder chilli, and wash your hands before touching your eyes.

Coconut isn’t a true nut either

It’s a drupe, like mango and apricot: a hard stone around a seed, inside a husk. Tip: shake a coconut and listen. Lots of sloshing water means a fresher one.

Myth: fruits are healthy, vegetables are boring

The truth: botany doesn’t decide nutrition. Botanical fruits like karela and bhindi are low in sugar, while a “vegetable” like aloo is mostly starch. Why people believe it: in the kitchen, “fruit” means sweet, so the word seems to promise vitamins and sweetness together. Fill half your plate with a mix, botanical fruit or not.

A quick “fruit or vegetable?” kitchen game

  1. Put 6 items on the table: 1 tomato, 1 bhindi, 1 potato, 1 banana, 1 carrot, 1 pea pod.
  2. Ask children to sort them into fruit and vegetable.
  3. Cut each one open (adults only with the knife) and look for seeds.
  4. Seeds inside means botanical fruit: tomato, bhindi, banana and the pea pod. No seeds: potato and carrot.
  5. Then make a salad with the winners: 1 chopped tomato, a few banana slices on the side, lemon and a pinch of chaat masala.
The traditional view

Desi kitchens have their own sorting: “thandi” and “garam” foods, not fruit and vegetable. Karela is praised, lauki juice is taken in the morning, and kela is given for loose motions. Mashed ripe banana is a sensible bland food for an upset stomach. But if loose motions come with blood, a high fever, or a child who is drowsy or passing very little urine, see a doctor promptly. Lauki juice has one real danger: taste a small piece first, and throw the whole lauki away if it’s bitter, since bitter gourds can carry toxins that have made people seriously ill.

Before you try it

Whole grapes and cherry tomatoes are round and slippery, so cut them lengthwise into quarters for children under 5; whole nuts aren’t for under-5s either. Anyone with a known food allergy should rely on an allergist, not on botany, to decide what’s safe, because relatives in a plant family don’t always cross-react and unrelated foods sometimes do. Don’t eat potatoes that are very green, bitter almonds, or raw cashews in the shell. Wash all produce under plain running water; no soap or bleach.

Fruit or vegetable? Your questions

Is tomato a fruit or vegetable?

Botanically a fruit (a berry), because it grows from a flower and holds seeds. In the kitchen and in some law, it’s treated as a vegetable.

Is banana really a berry?

Yes. It grows from one flower with one ovary and has soft flesh with seeds, even if in eating bananas they’re only tiny black specks.

Why isn’t a strawberry a berry?

Its flesh grows from the swollen base of the flower, not the ovary, and each “seed” outside is a separate tiny fruit.

Is a banana plant a tree?

No, it’s a giant herb. The trunk is a roll of leaf bases, not wood.

Is cucumber a fruit or vegetable?

A fruit, botanically, from the same family as lauki, tinda and karela.

Is bhindi a fruit?

Yes, a seed pod, which makes it a botanical fruit.

Is potato a fruit or vegetable?

A vegetable, a swollen underground stem called a tuber. Potato plants do make small green fruits, but those are poisonous and never eaten.

Where did tomatoes come from?

Western South America, first farmed in Mexico. They reached South Asia with European traders.

Are cashews poisonous?

Their shells hold a caustic oil, so they’re always heat-processed before sale. The cashews you buy are safe.

Is peanut a nut?

No, it’s a legume, like chana and beans. Peanut and tree-nut allergies are separate.

Does it matter for health whether it’s a fruit or vegetable?

Not really. Nutrition depends on the food, not its botanical label.

Is it safe to eat banana with milk?

For most people, yes. We checked the desi rule in milk with banana, fish or khatti cheezein.
