Arq for Weight Loss: Arq Zeera, Badiyan and Makoh Claims Checked

Which arq is best for weight loss? None of them, if you mean an arq that removes fat. Arq-e-zeera, arq-e-badiyan and arq makoh are herbal distillates (steam distilled waters), almost entirely water carrying a little aroma, so they have next to no calories and no effect on body fat.

That sounds like bad news. It is actually the useful part. A bottle of plain arq is a zero sugar, flavoured drink, and if it replaces a cola, a sweet sharbat or a third cup of doodh patti, that swap can genuinely help over weeks. Verdict: Only as a swap. Below is how to read the label so you buy that, and not a soft drink in a hakeem’s bottle.

In brief

  • What an arq is: water that has been boiled with a herb and distilled, so it carries the herb’s smell and some of its light oils
  • Calories: close to zero for a plain arq; sugar, if added, changes that
  • Fat burning effect: none, for any arq
  • Honest benefit: replacing sugary drinks
  • Worth checking: the ingredient list, for sugar, alcohol or preservatives
  • Extra caution: arq makoh, and any arq for pregnancy or children

What is an arq, and why can’t it change your weight?

Picture a still. Seeds or leaves are soaked, boiled, and the steam is cooled back into liquid. What collects is mostly water with the volatile part of the plant: the fragrant oils that make fennel smell sweet and cumin smell warm.

Distillation leaves behind most of what is heavy. Fibre, protein, starch, most minerals and the non volatile compounds stay in the pot. So an arq is light by design. It has no fibre to fill you, and nothing in it has been shown to change how the body stores or uses fat.

That last point applies to every arq on the shelf, whatever the bottle promises. Traditional uses for digestion and “garmi” are tradition; weight loss claims for arqs are marketing.

An arq’s best weight loss trick is the cola it replaces.

Arq zeera, arq badiyan and arq makoh: what each really offers

ArqTraditional useWeight loss reality
Arq-e-zeera (cumin)Digestion, wind, after heavy mealsNo fat effect; a pleasant sugar free drink
Arq-e-badiyan (fennel)Gas, colic, sweet breathNo fat effect; sweet smelling, so it can curb a sugar craving
Arq makoh (black nightshade)“Liver” and cooling, in UnaniNo fat effect; extra caution about the plant
Arq kasni (chicory)Liver and heat, in UnaniNo fat effect; no proof it helps fatty liver

Badiyan is a common naming trap. In arq form it usually means fennel, not star anise, and our page on arq badiyan explains the mix up. Arq makoh has its own safety story, told in the arq makoh guide, because the berries of the plant are poisonous at the green stage. Kasni is covered in our honest look at chicory seeds and arq.

Does arq kasni help fatty liver and weight?

Not in any way shown in people. Fatty liver is the question many readers are really asking, since the two often travel together. What helps a fatty liver is the same thing that helps weight: gradual fat loss through diet and activity, and cutting sugary drinks and alcohol. An arq can be part of that only as the sugar free drink in your glass.

If you have been told you have fatty liver, your doctor will want to follow it with blood tests and sometimes a scan. Don’t let a bottle of arq stand in for that.

The label check before you pay

Turn the bottle round. A plain arq should list only the herb and water, or the herb’s name and “distillate”. If you see sugar, syrup, glucose, a long list of flavours or a percentage of alcohol, you are holding a soft drink or a tincture, not a plain arq, and it is pointless to pay extra for it. Look for a manufacturing date, an expiry date and a batch number too; a cloudy arq, or one with floating threads, has gone off.

How can you use arq as a weight friendly drink?

The habit is the whole point, so make it easy to keep.

  1. Pour about 30 to 50 ml of plain arq into a tall glass.
  2. Top up with 200 to 250 ml of cold water, and add ice and a few mint leaves.
  3. Add a squeeze of lemon if you like a sharper taste; skip sugar and honey.
  4. Drink it at the moment you would normally reach for a cold drink, often mid afternoon or with lunch.
  5. Keep the open bottle in the fridge and use it within the time the label gives.

How much does that swap save? A can or glass of regular cola or a sweet sharbat can carry well over a hundred calories, depending on size and sugar, and many people drink more than one a day in summer. Our breakdown of calories in juice, cola and Rooh Afza gives the ranges. The WHO advises keeping free sugars under 10 per cent of daily energy, with more benefit below 5 per cent, and drinks are the easiest place to cut them.

In the old books

Unani pharmacy counts the arq as a dosage form of its own, a gentle way to deliver a herb’s aroma for digestion, thirst and heat, often mixed into other preparations. Hakeems valued it for being light. Nobody in that tradition claimed an arq would melt fat, and you won’t find that claim in the classical texts.

Worth knowing first

In pregnancy and for children, plain water is the better daily drink; ask your doctor or midwife before using any arq regularly, and keep arq makoh away from pregnancy, breastfeeding and young children. Choose arqs without added alcohol if you avoid it for religious or health reasons, and remember that sugar sweetened versions matter for anyone with diabetes. If you are on medicines for diabetes, blood pressure or the liver, or have kidney disease, check with your pharmacist before a daily herbal drink habit. Unexplained weight loss, yellowing of the eyes, dark urine or tummy pain on the right side need a doctor, not an arq.

What actually moves the scale, if arq doesn’t?

The unglamorous list: smaller portions of roti and rice, more sabzi and daal, fewer sweet drinks, a walk after meals, and enough sleep. Change those slowly and expect about 0.5 to 1 kg a week once the first water heavy week is past. For South Asians, risk begins at a BMI of about 23 for overweight and 27.5 for obesity in WHO Asian guidance, and a waist over roughly 90 cm in men or 80 cm in women is worth discussing with a doctor. If you take insulin or sulfonylurea tablets, speak to your doctor before cutting food, since your blood sugar can drop too low. More practical guides sit in our Desi Weight Loss section.

Arq and weight loss: what readers ask

Which arq is best for weight loss?

None removes fat. The “best” arq for weight is any plain, sugar free one you enjoy enough to drink instead of cola, sweet sharbat or extra sweet chai.

Does arq zeera help with weight loss?

Not directly. Arq zeera has no fat effect. Tradition uses it for digestion after heavy meals; for weight, its only real help is as a zero sugar drink swap.

Is arq badiyan good for weight loss?

Only as a swap. Its sweet fennel smell can take the edge off a sugar craving, but it does nothing to body fat. Check that the bottle means fennel and has no added sugar.

Does arq makoh reduce weight?

No. Arq makoh is a traditional “liver” distillate with no weight effect, and the plant needs extra care because its unripe berries are poisonous. Avoid it in pregnancy, breastfeeding and young children.

Is arq kasni good for fatty liver?

There is no proof in people that it helps. Fatty liver improves with gradual weight loss, less sugar and no alcohol, followed up by your doctor. Arq kasni can only be the drink in the glass.

Is it safe to drink arq daily?

A plain arq diluted in water is generally a light drink for healthy adults. Check the label for sugar and alcohol, and ask a doctor first in pregnancy, for children, or if you have kidney or liver disease.

Does arq have calories?

A plain arq has close to none, because distillation leaves sugars and starches behind. A sweetened arq or sharbat style product can carry many calories, so read the ingredient list.

Can I drink arq with diabetes?

Plain, unsweetened arq is fine as a drink for most people with diabetes. Avoid sweetened versions, and don’t change your medicine or skip meals because of any herbal drink.

How do I know if my arq has gone bad?

Cloudiness, floating threads or a sour, musty smell mean it has spoiled. Keep opened bottles in the fridge, use them within the label’s time, and throw away any bottle without an expiry date.

The bottom line

Arqs are fragrant water. They don’t burn fat, flatten bellies or fix a fatty liver, whatever the bottle says. Their honest place in a weight plan is as a cheap, sugar free drink that replaces something sweeter. Buy plain ones, read the label for sugar and alcohol, treat arq makoh with care, and put your effort into portions, walking and fewer sweet drinks.
