Why Do My Eyes Water? Adult Causes of Watery Eyes

Watery eyes are a symptom, not a disease, and the most common reasons are harmless: dryness, wind, allergy or something in the eye. A few simple clues tell you which direction to look.

Quick facts

  • Common causes: smoke, cold, wind, allergy, infection, dry eyes, blocked tear ducts.
  • Clue 1: one eye or both?
  • Clue 2: any sticky discharge, pain or redness?
  • Urgent: vision loss or severe eye pain.

Why do my eyes water for no reason?

There is usually a reason. The NHS says watery eyes are often harmless, and that smoke, cold or wind, an eyelash or grit can cause them. It also lists blocked tear ducts, allergy or infection such as conjunctivitis, eyelid problems, dry eyes, and some medicines. One odd cause explains many cases: a dry eye surface sends a message to flood the eye with tears, and these quick watery tears run off rather than stay.

A simple clue table

What you noticeOften points to
Both eyes, itchy, sneezingAllergy to dust or pollen
Both eyes, gritty, worse on screens or fansDryness
One eye, constant, no painBlocked tear drain
Sticky discharge, rednessInfection
Pain, light hurts, vision changedNeeds a doctor urgently

This is a guide to think with, not a diagnosis. Only an examination can say what is happening.

Keep a two line note for your doctor

Write which eye waters and when: morning, outdoors, reading, near the cooker. Watering on one side only, all day, gives an eye doctor a better lead than any list of causes. Add whether the nose runs, whether there is discharge, and whether it follows a cold.

Why do eyes water when reading or on screens?

Staring reduces blinking, tears dry unevenly, and the eye floods to compensate. Take the breaks in computer eye care tips and read about indoor air in fan and AC dryness.

Do eyes water with a runny nose or allergy?

Often, yes. Pollen, dust and smog irritate the eye lining, and the eyes release tears to wash them out. If the itch and sneezing come together, see seasonal allergies and red itchy eyes from smog and pollen. A pharmacist can suggest allergy medicines or drops, as the NHS notes.

What is a blocked tear duct in adults?

Tears drain through a tiny channel at the inner corner of each eyelid into the nose. If that drain narrows, tears spill onto the cheek even when the eye is not dry. In adults it tends to be one eye, and it may come with sticky discharge or a tender lump near the nose. Doctors may offer treatment, and the NHS mentions a small operation for eyelid problems or blocked tear ducts. A tear duct “syringing” is simply the name of a procedure in which the drain is flushed to check whether it is open. It is done by a clinician, not at home. For infants, read blocked tear duct in babies instead.

What can you do at home?

  1. Wash your hands, then wipe the lids with a clean tissue. Start at the nose side and move outward, so you do not drag dirt toward the tear drain.
  2. Use a fresh tissue for each eye.
  3. Stop wearing eye makeup and contact lenses while it settles.
  4. Wear wraparound glasses in wind and avoid smoke.
  5. Ask a pharmacist about lubricating drops if the eye also feels dry.

Pink and sticky eyes spread easily, so follow conjunctivitis hygiene: separate towels and no sharing of pillows. Do not put home liquids such as tea, milk or garlic water in the eye. Browse more in Eye Care.

Does crying clear the eyes?

Emotional tears do wash the eye surface a little, but they are not a treatment for a sore or watery eye, and rubbing makes things worse.

See a doctor if

Ask for urgent help, through NHS 111 or your local emergency number, for vision loss or severe eye pain. See a doctor soon if the watering keeps going and interferes with daily life, if your eyelid turns inwards or droops away from the eye, or if a lump or swelling around the eye does not improve. Red eye with pain, light sensitivity, or an injury needs same day care. Contact lens wearers with a red eye should not wait.

Watery eyes in adults: questions people ask

Why do my eyes water for no reason?

There is usually a cause such as dryness, wind, allergy, grit or a narrowed tear drain. Noting which eye and when helps a doctor.

Why does only one eye water constantly?

A blocked tear drain, an in-turned lash or an eyelid problem can do this. See an optician or doctor if it keeps going.

Why are my eyes watery in the morning?

Allergy, mild infection or lid edge irritation can show up after sleep. Clean the lids and see a doctor if it persists.

Why do my eyes water when reading?

Reduced blinking dries the surface, and the eye then floods with tears. Take regular screen breaks and blink fully.

Why do I have watery eyes and a runny nose?

Allergy or a cold can cause both. Pharmacists can advise on allergy medicines, and an infection that lasts needs a doctor.

Can adults have a blocked tear duct?

Yes. It commonly affects one eye and may cause sticky discharge. A doctor can check it and may suggest treatment.

Why do my eyes water in the wind?

Cold wind irritates the surface and triggers tears. Wraparound glasses reduce the effect.

Does crying clear the eyes?

It rinses the surface slightly but does not fix a watery or sore eye.

When are watery eyes an emergency?

Vision loss, severe eye pain, an eye injury, or a red eye with light sensitivity need urgent care.
