How Many Steps a Day? Is 7,000 Enough for a Man Over 40?
How many steps a day do you need? For most adults the health benefit keeps climbing up to roughly 7,000 to 9,000 steps a day, so a man over 40 doesn’t need 10,000 to gain a lot. If you’re at 3,000 now, every extra thousand counts.
The short version
- Good target: about 7,000 steps a day, more if you enjoy it.
- Under 60s: benefits kept rising to about 8,000 to 10,000 in one large analysis.
- Starting low? Add 1,000 steps a day every one or two weeks.
- Brisk beats slow, but slow still counts.
- Quotable: the best step count is the one higher than last month’s.

Is 7,000 steps a day enough?
Yes. For general health it’s a very good target, and the evidence behind it is better than for most step numbers you’ll see on posters, because a 2025 review in The Lancet Public Health pooled dozens of studies and found that, compared with 2,000 steps a day, around 7,000 was linked with much lower risk of early death, heart disease, dementia, falls and depressive symptoms. For several outcomes the curve flattened out after about 5,000 to 7,000. Then it levelled.
An earlier 2022 analysis of 15 groups of adults found the benefit for adults under 60 kept rising until roughly 8,000 to 10,000 steps, and for those 60 and over until about 6,000 to 8,000. So for a man in his 40s, 7,000 is a strong place to be. More helps a little.
The famous 10,000 started as a marketing number, not a medical one. Our page on the 10,000 steps rule covers its history. It’s still a fine goal for active men. Just not a pass mark.
How many steps should I aim for if I walk very little now?
Start from where you are, not from the poster, which means opening your phone’s step history, looking at the last seven days and taking the plain average, however embarrassing it is. Then:
- Weeks 1 to 2: add 1,000 steps a day to your average. That’s about 10 minutes of walking.
- Weeks 3 to 4: add another 1,000.
- Weeks 5 to 8: keep adding 1,000 every week or two until you reach 7,000.
- After that: hold it, and make part of it brisk.
A man averaging 3,000 a day reaches 7,000 in about two months at this pace. No sore knees. No giving up in week two. Our 7-day walking reset is a good way to start the first week.
Does brisk walking count more than slow walking?
It does. For fitness, the 2022 analysis noted that people who did more of their steps at a faster pace had extra benefit on top of the total. Brisk means you can talk but not sing; the talk test explains how to judge it without a watch.
Slow steps around the house and shop still matter, because they keep you from sitting for hours, but try to get at least 20 to 30 minutes of the day’s steps at a brisk pace so your heart and lungs get some work too. Brisk is the bonus.
The best step count is the one that’s higher than last month’s.
How do I fit 7,000 steps around shop or office hours?
- Walk to prayer: to the mosque and back, by the long route.
- Phone calls on foot: take supplier or family calls standing and pacing; see walking during phone calls.
- After meals: a 10 to 15 minute walk after lunch and after dinner, about 1,000 to 1,500 steps each.
- Park further away or get off the rickshaw or bus a stop early.
- Stairs instead of the lift for one or two floors.
- Weekends with the children: a park, a market, a walk to the nani’s house.
A shopkeeper who sits all day can still get 7,000 from three walks: before opening, after lunch and after Isha.
Are phone step counters accurate?
Close enough. Phones miss steps when they’re on a desk or in a bag and can count extra on bumpy rides, so what matters is the trend over weeks, using the same phone carried the same way, ideally in a trouser pocket where it counts best.
Will walking reduce belly fat?
Walking helps. It isn’t a fat eraser, though. A 30 minute brisk walk uses roughly the energy in one or two rotis, depending on your weight and pace. Over months, steady walking plus food changes is what brings a 40-inch waist down, and walking also helps blood sugar after meals and lifts mood, which makes the food side of the plan much easier to stick to on the tired evenings when a second roti is calling. The whole plan sits in our 12-week walking plan, and more short habits live in Tiny Habits.
The 1,000-step after-meal rule
After lunch and after dinner, walk until your phone shows 1,000 more steps than when you stood up. Ten minutes. Two meals a day gives you 2,000 extra steps without a single gym visit, no special clothes and no fee.
Walking brings on chest pain or tightness, pain spreading to the arm or jaw, unusual breathlessness, dizziness or calf pain that stops when you rest: stop and see a doctor. Chest pain that doesn’t settle within a few minutes of rest is an emergency, so call 1122. People with diabetes should check their feet daily and wear comfortable, closed shoes; anyone on insulin or sulfonylureas should carry a sugary snack. Painful knees? Walk on flat ground and increase slowly. Good shoes with a cushioned sole make a real difference over thousands of steps.
Step count questions
How many steps a day should a 40 year old man walk?
About 7,000 to 9,000 for good health. Starting lower is fine, as long as you add about 1,000 a day every week or two and keep going.
Is 7,000 steps a day good for weight loss?
It helps, especially with food changes, but steps alone rarely shift much weight. It’s best seen as support for a sensible eating plan.
How many km is 7,000 steps?
Roughly 5 km for an average adult stride, a bit less for shorter men, since the distance depends entirely on how long each step is.
How long does it take to walk 7,000 steps?
About 60 to 70 minutes in total, spread across the day. You don’t have to do it in one go.
Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?
No. Benefits are large well before 10,000, so treat it as a good goal for active people rather than a minimum anyone has to hit.
Do household chores count as steps?
Yes, if your phone or watch counts them.
Is it better to walk in the morning or evening?
Either works.
Can I walk every day without a rest day?
Yes. Walking is gentle enough for most people to do every single day, although an easier day makes sense whenever your feet or knees ache.
What shoes are best for daily walking?
Comfortable closed shoes with a cushioned, flexible sole and room for your toes. Avoid worn-out chappals for long walks.
