Urine Leakage in Seniors
Learn quick steps to protect dignity and stop night leaks.
Why leaks start
The bladder is a stretchy bag sealed by muscles. With age the pelvic floor hammock loosens and the bladder contracts early, so a cough or laugh can cause a wet spot. That early squeeze means even a small amount of urine can trigger urgency.
Four incontinence types
Most people have a mix, but note what happens and when. Stress leaks with a sneeze, urge leaks with a sudden rush, overflow dribbles constantly, and functional means they can’t get to the toilet in time. Keeping a simple diary of when leaks occur helps the doctor pinpoint the type.
Treatable causes to check
Before buying pads, rule out infection, constipation, certain medicines and high blood sugar. Each can make leakage worse or even disappear. A quick urine dipstick at home or a doctor’s test can catch an infection early.
Change pad quickly
A wet pad left on for more than two hours can irritate skin and cause sores.
Exercise improvement time
Pelvic floor exercises can help even at 70, but you need six to twelve weeks of steady practice to see change. Tie the routine to a daily cue, like a favorite TV show, to remember it.
Pad & night plan
Match the product to the leak amount. Light spurts need a thin shaped pad, moderate or night leaks work with pull-up pants, and heavy or bedbound cases need a diaper with an underpad. Check the fit each morning; a pad that slides down means the size is off.
The one mistake to avoid
Never restrict water to stop leaks. Less fluid makes urine more concentrated, which can irritate the bladder and increase infection risk.
