Quick Hydration Check

Stay tuned for a two-second bathroom habit that instantly tells you if you need more water, and stick around for the single most useful tip at the end.

How the habit works

Each time you head to the bathroom, pause just before you hit the flush. Place your hand on the handle, look down at the bowl for about two seconds, and register the colour you see.

Two-Second Check

That’s all the extra time you need, just a couple of seconds, no extra steps, no apps.

Target colour

Aim for a pale straw or light-yellow shade, similar to weak tea with plenty of milk. If the urine looks deeper, richer, or amber, treat it as a gentle cue to sip a glass of water.

Best time to check

Your first morning pee is naturally the darkest because you haven’t drunk for hours, so don’t panic. The most reliable check is around midday, after you’ve had a few drinks, and compare that colour to the pale-straw target.

If it’s dark

When you notice a darker hue, reach for a glass of water and sip it slowly over a few minutes rather than gulping. Then, at your next bathroom visit, usually an hour or two later, re-check the colour.

Colour-changing foods

Certain foods and supplements can trick your eyes: beetroot may tint urine pink, a high-dose B-vitamin can turn it neon yellow, and some medicines have similar effects. Check the leaflet, but don’t stop a prescription just because of colour.

The one habit to try

The one habit to try is simple: before you flush, glance at the urine colour, aim for a pale straw shade, and if it’s darker, drink a glass of water. Repeat at each visit and you’ll stay on top of hydration without extra effort.
