Trigger Finger & Diabetes
Ever notice a finger that catches in the morning? Stay tuned for the simple test that could reveal hidden sugar.
What trigger finger is
Each finger bends thanks to a tendon that slides through a palm tunnel. When the tunnel swells, the tendon catches, then snaps with a click, especially after a night of rest.
Stiff morning patterns
There are a few patterns you might notice. One finger catches and locks, all fingers stay stiff for half an hour, a thumb can feel numb at night, and older hands develop hard bumps.
Home checks
Try three quick checks at home. Time how long it takes for your hands to feel normal after waking. Do a slow bend-and-straighten test five times per finger. Feel for a small nodule at the base of the stiff finger.
Morning stiffness limit
If your hands feel back in less than fifteen minutes, that's usually normal.
Diabetes link
High sugar can thicken tendon sheaths, making them stickier. That's why a new trigger finger often signals you should check your blood sugar. If you already have diabetes, let your doctor know before any steroid injection.
Home remedy
Give the gripping hand a break for three to four weeks. Soak it in warm water for five minutes each morning and gently straighten. Wear a night splint, and use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory gel if needed.
Recovery time
Most people notice improvement after three to four weeks of consistent care.
The one test to consider
The key step is simple: ask your doctor for a fasting sugar test and an HbA1c. It can reveal hidden high sugar early.
