Tracking Weight Gain
Want to know if your extra calories are building muscle or just water? Stay till the end for the single habit that makes all the difference.
Medical check first
If your weight is dropping without a clear reason, or you’ve been eating a lot and seeing no change, see a doctor before you start tracking. Conditions like thyroid issues, diabetes, or infections can show up this way.
Water weight swing
A single morning can swing up to a kilo just from water shifts, salt, carbs, hormones, or heat. That’s why daily numbers look noisy, but weekly trends reveal the real story.
Weigh the right way
Pick a day, say Friday, and stick to it. Weigh right after waking, after the bathroom, before any food or drink. Wear the same light clothes or none, and keep the scale on a hard floor.
Tape measurements
Every two weeks measure your upper arm and waist. Arm around the thickest part, halfway between shoulder and elbow. Waist halfway between rib and hip, after a gentle breath out, don’t suck in.
Add extra calories
If after four weeks you see no gain, log everything you eat for a few days. You’ll often find a missed meal. Adding about 200 calories, a glass of full-fat milk or a handful of peanuts, can jump-start progress.
Strength log
Keep a simple log for each workout. Note reps and the weight you lift. If you’re adding reps or load while the scale climbs slowly, you’re building muscle, not just fluff.
The one habit
The single habit that ties everything together is a weekly weigh-in under identical conditions, paired with a monthly photo set. This combo shows whether you’re adding muscle, fat, or just water.
