Thyroid Self-Check
Learn a simple one-minute trick to spot thyroid issues at home.
Glass-of-Water Test Steps
First, stand in front of a bright mirror and lift your chin just enough to stretch the skin on the lower neck. Take a sip of water, hold it, then swallow while keeping your eyes fixed on the area just below the Adam’s apple. Watch for any rise or bulge as you swallow.
Normal Result
A normal result looks smooth and flat. Nothing should rise when you swallow, and feeling the neck should reveal either no lump or a very gentle, symmetrical fullness on both sides.
Abnormal Result
If you see a bulge that lifts with each swallow, that’s a sign something’s there. A single lump that moves on one side suggests a nodule. When both sides swell together it’s likely a goitre, which can occur with any thyroid activity level.
Fast resting pulse
A resting heart rate over one hundred beats per minute can hint at an overactive thyroid, especially when paired with weight loss or tremor.
Slow resting pulse
Conversely, a steady pulse under sixty beats per minute often points toward an underactive thyroid, especially with fatigue and cold intolerance.
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor promptly if you discover a new lump or swelling, if you notice four or more of the symptoms we listed, or if a lump feels hard, fixed, or grows quickly. Also get urgent care for any hoarse voice, trouble swallowing, noisy breathing, or a racing pulse with fever.
The one habit
The single most useful habit is to perform the glass-of-water swallow test each morning; it’s quick, free, and can catch a lump before it becomes a problem.
